Footy legend Mick Malthouse ditches his ABC radio gig to tear strips off off the national broadcaster - and a Geelong grand final winning champion

  • Malthouse just walked in and demanded a headset
  • Had a number of good laughs at the ABC's expense
  • Was especially savage at a former Geelong great

Mick Malthouse is ever the showman and he had a host of former players in stitches on Sunday when he served up some hilarious insults to a Geelong champion - and ABC Radio.

The former West Coast Eagles, Collingwood and Carlton coach had been calling the St Kilda v Sydney Swans clash at Marvel Stadium on Sunday when he decided to ditch his post in the ABC commentary box.

He then wandered into the Triple M box where his former star at the Magpies, Dale 'Daisy' Thomas, was heading up The Sunday Rub program.

'He's just come in and demanded a headset,' a bemused Thomas said as Malthouse made himself at home.

Triple M's Nathan Brown asked: 'Do you laugh as much like we're laughing here in your box over there [at the ABC]?'

Malthouse decided to serve it up to the national broadcaster who was paying him to be at the ground, while he wandered off to chat on a rival network.

'It's ABC,' Malthouse replied, as if it was obvious that the answer had to be 'no'.

'Browny, bite your tongue. Honestly, come on. If I get sacked from there, somebody [here] has got to go,' Malthouse continued.

'Steve's first one out,' The Sunday Rub co-host Joey Montagna said.

'Is there two of them there, or one?' Malthouse replied, refering to Johnson's weight gain in retirement which brought raucous laughter.

'Just cause I dined out on your teams ... four [goals] in the 2011 grand final,' Johnson quipped.

'I know you've got a long memory but put those thoughts aside.'

'They did say that he's a big head,' Malthouse said.

Never short of a big opinion, Malthouse then talked about how dull life can get in the ABC commentary box.

'I've got Lingy [former Geelong champion Cameron Ling] next to me and he doesn't talk well,' Malthouse said.

'You're going to cause some real trouble in there,' he added, talking about how his chat with Thomas and the Triple M boys would have repercussions.

'We better let you go, then,' Thomas said.

'If you're tuning in, ABC,' Malthouse said to more laughter.

So why was Malthouse in the Triple M box to begin with?

He had run into Thomas after the match for a warm catch-up and decided to follow him directly to the Triple M commentary position.

'Why is Dale Thomas your favourite?' Brown asked.

'A favourite,' Malthouse corrected.

'If I said he's my favourite I would never spoken to again by [Ben] Johnson and [Paul] Licuria and [Glen] Jakovich.

'Why? Because he listened to me. He was always there, I never had a bad game with Daisy.'

Johnson then asked: 'Was he worth the $750k to get across to Carlton?'

'Is that all you got?' Malthouse replied.

'They dudded you.'

'They couldn't pay me and you,' Thomas fired back.

'Well, that's what they said, they would pinch it off me to give to you,' replied Malthouse as the whole box was in hysterics.

'Do you remember at the end of '09 and I rung you from New York asking if I could come to Collingwood?' Brown asked.

Malthouse replied: 'I rung him (Thomas) and said don't touch him.'

Johnson then tried to inject himself in the conversation, getting a withering serve from Malthouse for his troubles.

'Mick tried to get me to the 'Pies at the end of '06,' Johnson said.

'Then you fell off that [roof of a toilet block] ... you broke both legs and everything else,' Malthouse replied, referring to the incident where Johnson broke both his ankles at a Geelong Christmas party.

'You still wanted me!' Johnson said.

'The doctor said don't touch him because he's got a weak heart,' Malthouse fired back.

'You want to keep loading them up, I'll keep serving them up. This channel [Triple M] doesn't mean anything to me.'
