Amazon has revealed the days Prime Day 2024 will take place this year. Here's what you can expect from the 10th Prime Day savings event.

Amazon Prime Day is one of the most anticipated shopping events of the year. And the date on which it will be held is also highly anticipated. To help you prep for your shopping marathon, we broke down the details of this year's Prime Day dates, what will be on sale this Prime Day, as well as the shopping tips and tricks you can use to save even more during the mega sale.

What is Prime Day?

Prime Day is an annual sale that the online retailer, Amazon, hosts for its Prime members. The sale event started in 2015 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Amazon's founding.

This shopping event often serves as a sort of summer counterpart to Black Friday. During Prime Day, Amazon often features deep discounts on products from an extensive range of categories, including its own in-house product lines.

Note: To shop on Prime Day, you need to have an Amazon Prime membership. A membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. You can also try out Amazon Prime for free for 30 days with the free trial. You can even shop Amazon Prime Day deals during your free trial.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

Amazon has announced that Prime Day 2024 – which happens to be its 10th Prime Day savings event – will take place July 16 and 17.

In 2023, Amazon revealed on June 21 that its Prime Day sale would take place on July 11 and July 12. That aligned with the timeline of past Amazon Prime Days, too – the online retailer tends to host the savings event in mid-July.

If you can't wait to start shopping, Amazon does always have deals available to shoppers in its section titled 'Today's Deals.'

How long is Prime Day?

Amazon seems to have hit a sweet spot of two days for Prime Day. Prior to 2020, it had lengthened Prime Day by 12 hours each year, reaching 48 hours in 2019. It has held steady at 48 hours since then.

For reference, here are all the past dates of Prime Day:

  • 2023: Tuesday, July 11 (12 a.m. PT) to Wednesday, July 12 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2022: Tuesday, July 12 (12 a.m. PT) to Wednesday, July 13 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2021: Monday, Jun. 21 (12 a.m. PT) to Tuesday, Jun. 22 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2020: Tuesday, Oct. 13 (12 a.m. PT) to Wednesday, Oct. 14 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2019: Monday, July 15 (12 a.m. PT) to Tuesday, July 16 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2018: Monday, July 16 (12 p.m. PT) to Tuesday, July 17 (11:59 p.m. PT).
  • 2017: Monday, July 10 (6 p.m. PT) through Wednesday, July 11 (11:59 a.m. PT).
  • 2016: Tuesday, July 12 (12 a.m. PT to 11:59 PT).
  • 2015: Wednesday, July 15 (12 a.m. PT to 11:59 p.m. PT).

When does Amazon announce Prime Day?

Amazon typically announces its specific Prime Day dates and deal plans towards the end of June. Be on the lookout for an announcement close to the first day of summer – a couple of weeks before the sale will begin.

  • In 2024, Amazon announced its Prime Day dates on June 25.
  • In 2023, Amazon announced its Prime Day 2023 dates on June 21.
  • Amazon announced Prime Day 2022 on June 16 – just a little over three weeks before its July 12 kickoff.
  • In 2021, Amazon revealed the dates for Prime Day on June 1 – just shy of three weeks before its June 21 kickoff.
  • In 2020, Amazon announced Prime Day on Sept. 28 – two weeks before the big event.
  • In 2019, Amazon announced the dates on June 24 – likely in an attempt to get the news out well ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

What time will Prime Day 2024 start?

Amazon's Prime Day sales tend to start at 12 a.m. PT (3 a.m. ET).

There have only been two years where Amazon didn't kick off the sale at midnight. In 2018, deals started right in the middle of the workday. And, in 2017, Prime Day kicked off in the evening.

What will be on sale at Amazon during Prime Day 2024?

In addition to savings on Amazon Alexa-enable devices, such as Echo smart speakers and Ring bundles, several brand-name products are typically included in Amazon's Prime Day sale. In the past, this has included everything from Peloton exercise equipment to Bose speakers.

You will find a wide selection of back-to-school essentials on sale -- up to 40% off, in fact. And major savings on Amazon movies, streaming channels and music.

What Prime Day means for the retail industry

Prime Day is a $12 billion giant of a sales day. And whenever Amazon decides to hold, it has major consequences for the entire retail industry.

When held in summer, Prime Day generally gives a midsummer lift to other retailers that throw competing Black Friday in July sales.

Regardless of when Prime Day happens, it sets the stage for Black Friday pricing. Amazon's Prime Day pricing on hot items generally gets echoed throughout the industry on Black Friday. And we don't think that will change. Prime Day can still be considered Black Friday Act 1, no matter where on the calendar it falls.

Tips for shopping Prime Day

  • Most deals will last for all of Prime Day: A middle-of-the-night start time doesn't necessarily mean you have to start shopping at that time. Unless there's a must-have item on your list, you can shop during your workday. You may miss some limited-time lightning deals (depending on how Amazon schedules those). Still, Amazon usually lets the majority of its pricing ride for the entirety of Prime Day when it comes to popular items.
  • You can shop with a free trial: As shared above, you will have access to Amazon's Prime Day deals even if you are in the 30-day free trial phase of your Prime membership. This means you can start your free trial on Prime Day and shop that same day.
  • Use Alexa to find deals: Not able to sit down at your laptop to shop during Prime Day? No problem; if your account is linked to an Amazon Alexa-powered device, you can find deals and place orders all through voice commands.
  • Set up notifications: You can set up deal alert notifications on Amazon or through your Alexa device. This way, if, for example, you want to be notified when that patio chair you recently viewed will go on sale, you can set up the notification and get an alert on Prime Day.
