Stormwater Management

Flood Control and Downtown Revitalization

Through Engineering Division staff, the Village manages both public and private development methodologies for conveying stormwater through open channels, streams, and/or storm sewers. Typically, minor to moderate storm events are managed through the Village's system of pipes and basins. However, extreme rainfall events can surcharge the system, leading to the use of designed surface overflow routes until the capacity of the system is restored.

Flood Information

Flood Insurance Rate Maps prepared by FEMA for Lake County, effective September 18, 2013, are currently used to identify flood hazard zones and determine flood insurance rates. These FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps, or FIRMs, are used to determine whether or not a property is subject to special building requirements. The Village offers floodplain determinations for your property, free of charge. Please contact Engineering at 847-949-3220 with any questions you may have.

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

Water pollution degrades surface waters making them unsafe for drinking, fishing, swimming, and other activities. As authorized by the Clean Water Act, the federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program controls water pollution by regulating point sources that discharge pollutants into the waters of the United States.

Similar to other communities across the region and country, the Engineering Division maintains the Village's NDPES stormwater program permit. The Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit issued by the EPA requires that the Village monitor and regulate stormwater discharges throughout the community. The links provided direct you to pages with additional information regarding the programs.
