Unassuming food truck is named as the BEST sushi restaurant in America for the second year in a row

If you want the the best sushi in America you may have to travel a little off the mainland to get to a notorious a food truck - but it's worth the journey.

According to Yelp, Kaua'i Sushi Station, located on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i, has been named the best sushi in the nation - for the second year in a row.

Yelp recently named  Kaua'i Sushi Station as the number one pick in their Top 100 Sushi Spots of 2024, and despite being located around 2,500 miles from the United States mainland it may be worth the trek.

The food truck, which opened four years ago in Līhu'e on the East Side of the Garden Isle, also took out first place for the best sushi in Yelp's 2023 list.

'We were so excited. We're proud because we work so hard,' owner and chef James Jithitikunchai told Kauai Now News.

'We make with our heart… We're caring about our food,' he continued.

He describes making sushi as an 'art,' which contributes to the popularity of their food truck.

'I like to make something beautiful,' James described of how he makes sushi.

'Sushi is an art food, you know?' he added.

Haru and James claim their use of fresh and authentic ingredients are what makes their sushi so popular.

They use fresh-caught yellowfin tuna from local fishermen and many of their other ingredients are imported from Japan.

The couple also regularly visit Nāwiliwili Harbor to collect sea urchin, squid and otoro, which is the belly cut of bluefin tuna.

According to Yelp, Kaua'i Sushi Station's most popular items are the Ginger Crazy Roll and the Godzilla Roll.

They purchase fresh-caught yellowfin tuna from local fishermen, and many of their other ingredients are imported from Japan

According to reviews on the site, Kaua'i Sushi Station stands out because their sushi is presented on plates and is decorated with organic edible flowers.

James previously worked as a sushi chef at Japanese Grandma's - a Japanese café in Hanapēpē - but decided to open his own establishment with wife Haru Assawaprayukul.

Both James and Haru are from Bangkok but met in the U.S. while he was making sushi at restaurants in Chicago.

According to Yelp, the food truck is rated 4.8 out of five by customers, with many gushing reviews. 

'Beautiful food with fantastic tasting food. This hidden gem with the really kind workers. Overall, one of the best food experiences we've ever had in Kauai!' one customer wrote.

'I know what you're thinking because I thought it too at first, sushi from a food truck? Sounds like gas station sushi but believe me when I tell you this is the best of the best!' gushed another.

'A well deserved five-star!' agreed another happy customer, calling it a 'work of art.'

'Overall, the rolls were well balanced, fish was fresh, price was good. Service was great. Parking was available, plenty of outdoor seating.'
