The Town of Banff is policed by a local detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). RCMP officers preserve the peace, uphold Canadian law and respond to noise bylaw infractions.


Online Crime Reporting

Use this online tool to report less serious crimes occurring within the town of Banff area. All reports will be followed up with by a phone call from a police officer within five business days.

Use the link below to report the following crimes online:

  • Damage/mischief to property under $5,000
  • Theft of bicycle under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Theft from vehicle under $5,000
  • Lost property

Incidents must also satisfy the following conditions to be reported online:

  • No witnesses or suspects
  • Item(s) lost or stolen must cost less than $5,000
  • Vandalized property will cost less than $5,000 to repair
  • There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, licence plates or decals

This tool provides a convenient way to report certain types of crime that are not time-sensitive. RCMP want all crime reported, no matter how small.

Reporting less serious crime online helps emergency call takers and frontline members focus their time on high-priority calls.
All reports of crime are taken seriously and crime reported online will be treated the same as crime reported in any other way.

Bike Index

Bike Index 


The Banff RCMP have partnered with Bike Index, non-profit online bicycle registry, to help deter bike theft from the moment you purchase your bicycle. If your bicycle is ever lost or stolen, the Bike Index ensures recovered bikes cand can be returned is soon as possible

Bike Index is free to register your bicycle. If your bike is ever lost/stolen you can log into to your Bike Index account, on a desktop or mobile device, and mark it ‘stolen’ to let the community know. The Bike Index will keep track of important information should you need to report your bike as lost/stolen and will help in ensuring found/recovered bikes are returned to their owners.

Law enforcement agencies, such as Banff RCMP, Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service and many agencies across Canada and the U.S. have access to the Bike Index to check ownership on lost or recovered bikes. 

The free bicycle registry has over 800 partner organizations, almost a quarter of a million registrations, and over $8 million in stolen bicycle recoveries.

Local bicycle retailers are being recruited to help customers register their bikes before they leave the store.

You can go to bikeindex.org to register your bike, in about two minutes, and your registration is completely free - forever.

If your bike is ever lost/stolen, head to your Bike Index account and mark it ‘stolen’ to let the community know. If anyone sees it, they can contact you immediately.

How to register your bike with Bike Index

1. Required information:

  • Serial Number
  • Make
  • Model
  • Year
  • Frame Colour
  • Frame Material
  • Markings
  • Bike Photograph

2.   Go to BikeIndex.org and create an account entering your phone number and email address.   *There is an option to mark this information private to the general public*.

3. Click on the drop-down at the top and select “Add a bike”

4. Fill in the boxes of required information and upload a photo of your bike.

You have officially registered your bike!

If you find your stolen bike being sold online

1. Take screenshots of the ad – ensure the ad # and any seller contact information is recorded

2. Have your proof of ownership ready (your Bike Index account should have all the necessary details like serial #, Bike Index sticker number, photos, etc.)

3. Contact police immediately at (Banff RCMP: 403-762-2226) or come to the police station.

NEVER contact the suspect or arrange to meet the suspect yourself. For your safety and proper investigative measures, please let police officers take care of this.
