Helicopter support remains vital in the fight against poaching and other illegal activities, with 71 operations covering nearly 15,000 kilometres in 121 hours last year alone. The helicopter enables rapid deployment, reducing the critical time period between detection and pursuit. Alongside the Cessna 180 fixed-wing aircraft, the helicopter acts as a deterrence to poachers and provides a morale boost for teams on the ground, particularly those in remote scout camps that are often inaccessible by road during the rainy season. Thank you Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, US EMbassy and Dazzle Africa for supporting our helicopter operations. 📷 | Mjose Jozie #helicopter #helicopterpatrol #antipoaching #SouthLaungwaNationalPark #LuangwaValley #SouthLuangwa #Zambia

Protecting the wildlife and habitats of the South Luangwa ecosystem in Zambia
About us
Since 2003, Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) has worked in partnership with Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) on the frontline of wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict mitigation in the South Luangwa Valley. CSL works to protect the 1,400,000 hectares of largely intact wilderness in eastern Zambia that make up the South Luangwa National Park and the surrounding game management areas. CSL practises a multi-faceted approach to wildlife resource management and protection, working in collaboration with DNPW and alongside local partners and stakeholders in the Luangwa ecosystem to implement ground and helicopter patrols, aerial surveillance patrols, sniffer dog detection and tracking activities, wildlife rescues and community veterinary work, and human-wildlife coexistence community programmes.

Earlier this week, Kamini, a leopardess with a two-month-old cub, was reported to CSL and DNPW by Remote Africa Safaris’ Tafika Camp with a snare around her left hind leg. The snare was made of sack threads originally intended to capture Guinea fowl. Leopards are notoriously difficult to dart but Dr Sichande managed to dart Kamini successfully on Monday. The snare was removed and the wound was cleaned with a dilute iodine solution. Kamini was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. After the CSL-DNPW teams left, the Tafika team stayed with Kamini all night until she completely recovered from the sedative drug. In the early hours, Kamini returned to her cub. The last two photos are of Kamini before her foot got caught in a snare. Thank you Nick Riddin for reporting Kamini and well done to the CSL-DNPW veterinary teams for successfully removing the snare. Thank you Dazzle Africa FutureforElephants e.V. Zoo Atlanta Humane Society International, Painted Dog Conservation Inc. and the Deepak Raghavan Family Foundation for supporting CSL’s wildlife rescue operations. 📷 | Nick Riddin / Remote Africa Safaris #wildliferescue #leopard #antisnaring #wildlifeveterinarian #wildlifevet #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #LuangwaValley #SouthLuangwa #Zambia

#WorldFemaleRangerWeek For more than 17 years, Janet has worked on the frontline protecting the wildlife of South Luangwa, seizing ivory, bushmeat, animal skins, live animals, firearms and ammunition. Despite encountering threats while apprehending suspects, she handles these situations with remarkable composure. Janet has overcome adversity, losing both her parents when she was just 15 years old. With resilience and determination, she has become a role model for women, aspiring them to stand alongside men at the forefront of conservation. 📹 | Mjose Jozie #femalerangers #womeninconservation #genderequality #femaleempowerment #femalewarriors #girlpower #antipoaching #conservationdog #workingdog #doglover #wildlifeconservation #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #LuangwaValley #SouthLuangwa #Zambia

Today marks the beginning of #WorldFemaleRangerWeek, a global celebration of female rangers as champions of wildlife conservation. CSL proudly celebrates its 25 female rangers and the dedicated women from Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, who bravely protect the wildlife and habitats of South Luangwa. Their commitment and courage serve as an inspiration for future generations of women to follow in their conservation footsteps. 📷 | Mjose Jozie, Marcus Westberg and Edward Selfe #WorldFemaleRangerDay #femalerangers #womeninconservation #genderequality #femaleempowerment #womensrights #conservationheroes #femalewarriors #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #SouthLuangwa #LuangwaValley #Zambia

This morning, a film crew found an elephant calf with gunshot wounds in its left forelimb and left thorax. Dr Mwamba Sichande, CSL-ZCP Veterinarian, intern Dr Andrew Sinda (in blue, whose education was sponsored by Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust | Zambia and Project Luangwa) and three DNPW officers attended to the injured elephant calf. After darting the mother and calf, they found that the bullet had passed through the calf’s foot. Dr Sichande and Dr Sinda cleaned both wounds with iodine solution and administered long-acting penicillin and anti-inflammatory drugs. Our wildlife rescue operations would not be possible without your support. We would particularly like to thank Dazzle Africa Zoo Atlanta Humane Society International Future for Elephants, Painted Dog Conservation Inc. and the Deepak Raghavan Family Foundation. 📷 | Dr Mwamba Sichande, CSL-ZCP Veterinarian #wildliferescue #antipoaching #wildlifeveterinarian #willdifevet #veterinarian #elephant #wildlifeconservation #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #LuangwaValley #SouthLuangwa #Zambia

#WorldGiraffeDay 🦒The iconic Luangwa giraffe, a subspecies of the Masai giraffe, is an isolated population of giraffe in the Luangwa Valley. Snare-related injuries and potential fatalities pose significant threats to the Luangwa giraffe population. Illegal bushmeat harvesting, often using wire snares, is a major cause of wildlife population declines. These snares are indiscriminate, resulting in unintended bycatch, including giraffes. Beyond the risk of death from poaching, injuries from escaping snares can impair movement and behaviour, increasing predation risk and reducing foraging efficiency. CSL works with Zambian Carnivore Programme and Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, with funding support from GIRAFFE CONSERVATION FOUNDATION Save Giraffes Now Dazzle Africa Zoo Atlanta Humane Society International to de-snare giraffe. In 2023, we successfully de-snared two giraffes. Together, we are committed to ensuring a future for giraffes in the Luangwa Valley. 📹 | Scott Hyman 📷 | Edward Selfe #giraffe #giraffeconservation #standtallforgiraffe #giraffelovers #antisnaring #wildlifeconservation #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #SouthLuangwa #LuangwaValley #Zambia

One of the major cause of carnivore conflict in many cases is the gap in knowledge about how certain situations could be avoided before it escalates. Just in case you live close to lions, though very tough and challenging, here is some tips on how you could protect yourself when you come face to face with the lions. #lion #conservationatheart #zcp

What a fantastic day at the CSL Fun Run and ZCP Carnivore Cup Final! 🏃🏾♂️⚽️ Last Saturday, over 6,000 people came together for an incredible sports event organised by Conservation South Luangwa (CSL), Zambian Carnivore Programme, Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust | Zambia with support from WCP, Project Luangwa and Elephant Charge. This year’s theme was ‘protecting the environment for people and wildlife’. Highlights included a 10K run, a new half-marathon introduced this year, and the conclusion of this year’s ZCP football tournament. The action-packed day also featured sack races, egg and spoon races, three-legged races, and the eagerly anticipated tug of war. Football star Collins Mbesuma joined in, competing with the Tribal Textiles team in the tug of war final against the winners Zambia Police Service. The day also featured volleyball, netball and aerobics. Entertainment included live theatre, music performances, and traditional dances, all leading up to a closing speech by the District Commissioner and the award ceremony. 🏅 A special thank you to CSL Board member Graph Evans for coordinating this memorable event. Already looking forward to next year! 📷 | Mjose Jozie (face painting Anna Tolan/Chipembele), and 📹 | Sue Lawther-Brown/Chipembele (fun run) and Luwi Nguluka/WCP (tug of war and tug of war celebrations) Additional photos: https://lnkd.in/esSrTG8x #sportsday #halfmarathon #running #football #netball #volleyball #tugofwar #community #humanwildlifecoexistence #conservationeducation #learntoconserve #wildlifeconservation #SouthLuangwa #LuangwaValley #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #Mfuwe #Zambia

#WorldCrocodileDay 🐊 How many crocodiles can you spot? The Luangwa River is home to a large population of Nile crocodiles. These apex predators play an important role in maintaining the health of the river’s ecosystem. However, human-crocodile conflict is a significant challenge in the Luangwa Valley, intensified by many factors, including flooding during the wet season. High water levels in the Luangwa River and its tributaries increase the likelihood of direct encounters between people and crocodiles. To address this risk, CSL provides boats (more stable than a traditional dug-out canoe) and fibreglass canoes to assist communities, and CSL teams, in safely navigating dangerous river crossings. 📷 | Nick Riddin / Remote Africa #worldcrocday #crocodile #nilecrocodile #reptile #wildlifeconservation #LuangwaRiver #africanwildlife #SouthLuangwaNationalPark #SouthLuangwa #LuangwaValley #Zambia
