Tina’s 4-star review:
I enjoyed my group surf lesson in Kihei. My instructors were Josh and someone else who I can't remember, sorry. I was actually able to watch the 7 AM lesson from shore and then walk up and make a reservation for the 9:30 lesson. I suggest doing this if you're not entirely sure a surf lesson is for you.
Once the time came for the lesson to start, everyone kind of crowded around outside and didn't know what to do. They need to have a better system for assigning surf gear. I didn't even get my initial picture taken by the surf board, boo. Once we were all geared up, we walked across the street to do the land lessons in the park. They lasted for about 30 minutes and I felt confident enough that I could ride a wave.
We all walked out to the water ready to ride our first wave. Caution: This beach has a rocky bottom! A couple times I hit my foot on a sharp rock and it wasn't pleasant. If you have your own water shoes with a thick sole, wear those instead of what they give you. The good news is everyone got up on a wave, and it was awesome! Sure, they are tiny little waves, but it was still fun. Even the people who don't know how to follow directions did alright. The group size wasn't too big to figure out what to do, and I think as long as you are somewhat coordinated, you'll be ok!
I didn't stay to whole time in the water because of the rocks and I was getting tired of jumping up and down on my board for only 1 minute rides. Everyone else was having a blast though, so I don't want that to reflect on the lesson.
I did end up purchasing the CD with the photos on it. They were great! The photographer is a separate entity and encourages you to pay cash, so come prepared. These pictures are some of my favorite from the trip! I didn't get a surf diploma or t-shirt. All I got was a really trashy looking trucker hat. Needless to say, that stayed on Maui and didn't make it home with me.
