Ohio man bitten by shark at Florida beach describes what he felt in water
A 21-year-old Ohio man is recovering after a shark attack in Florida sent him to the hospital during the week of Fourth of July.
Conner Baker, of Belpre, Ohio, about 190 miles east of Cincinnati, was one of two people bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach last week.
Officials say he was playing football in knee-deep water when a shark came up and bit him on his foot.
Baker, who was taken to the hospital after the attack, said he first felt shock and adrenaline, but the pain really set in once he got to shore and looked at his foot.
Baker said when he jumped to catch a football in the water, he felt like he was stabbed with something on both sides of his foot. He said he quickly pulled his foot up and hobbled to the shore.
"I was able to actually see my foot, and I saw the blood come out," Baker said. "I could see the inside of my foot, which you never want to see that and then the pain got really bad.
Baker said once he got to the hospital that specialized in aquatic animal injuries, his foot started bleeding again.
"He cut right through basically the entirety of the top of my foot to the bone," Baker said.
Doctors said the 21-year-old will be able to walk again, but they also said the bite came dangerously close to a main tendon, which would have left him unable to use his foot.
Baker told WLWT that he knew something like this could happen in the water and that he was glad none of the children who were in the water with him were hurt.
