Long story short, if you are in a mandatory evacuation zone, you should leave.

But if you are not ordered to evacuate, preparation is key.

Planning to evacuate?

Chatham County has three separate evacuation zones.

Zone A is anything east of the Truman Parkway. Zone B is west of the Truman but east of I-95. And Zone C is everything west of I-95.

As for South Carolina, the two main evacuation routes are Highway 278 and Highway 21.

For those on Hilton Head Island, you'll take 278 to I-95. In Beaufort, you'll take Highway 21.
