Hurricane Beryl set to impact Jamaica on Wednesday...when the storm may reach Cancun and Cozumel
Hurricane Beryl remains a major hurricane in the Caribbean with impacts expected to reach Jamaica on Wednesday, and Mexico later this week. The hurricane is forecast to slowly weaken over the next 48 hours, but still pack a fierce punch as it quickly moves in a west-northwest direction.
Here is a look at Futurecast showing Beryl making landfall on Jamaica by Wednesday afternoon. As of this update, Beryl is forecast to reach Jamaica as a major category 3 hurricane with winds of around 125 mph possible. Torrential rain may lead to flash flooding on the island as well. Coastal locations may see storm surge flooding Beryl pushes towards Jamaica.
By Thursday night and Friday, Beryl should reach the Mexico coast. Impacts from Beryl may include wind, rain, and storm surge to areas like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum. The final track and intensity of the storm will determine the exact impacts.
In the wake of Beryl, Saharan dust will push across the Atlantic Ocean helping to limit or suppress tropical activity. The tropical wave that is trailing Beryl has only a 20% chance of development. Here is a look at the dust setup by Friday.
So far this hurricane season we have seen 3 named storms. The big story is one of those being an early season category 5 hurricane! The earliest category 5 hurricane on record.
