Ready for Race Day: How to avoid getting injured during a marathon
WE’RE JUST TEN DAYS OUT FROM THE ORLANDO HALF MARATHON. AND RIGHT NOW, RUNNERS ARE REALLY FOCUSING ON GOOD NUTRITION, HYDRATION AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, NOT GETTING HURT. YES, PROPER EXERCISES CAN HELP PREVENT A MAJOR SETBACK LIKE THAT. SHELDON, YOU CAUGHT UP WITH A LOCAL WOMAN WHO IS TRAINING FOR THE U.S. AFTER A LIFE CHANGING SURGERY. YEAH, HER HEALTH JOURNEY IS TRULY REMARKABLE AND SHE’S USING ADVENTHEALTH RUNNER PERFORMANCE PROGRAM TO GET READY FOR RACE DAY IN JULY OF 2022. I HAD A GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY WITH ADVENTHEALTH. SO? SO I’VE LOST OVER 125 POUNDS. MONTHS AFTER THAT SURGERY, ALLIE SCHULTZ’S PASSION FOR RUNNING REALLY TOOK OFF. I KIND OF STARTED RUNNING BECAUSE I NOT SO MUCH TO LOSE THE WEIGHT, BUT JUST BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO. NOW AND I REALLY FOUND THIS JOY IN RUNNING, I’M ABLE TO PLAY WITH MY SON SO MUCH MORE. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE ABLE TO DO SO MANY MORE THINGS LIKE WE CAN GO ON WALKS AND HANG OUT. I’VE JUST HAD SO MUCH MORE ENERGY. IT’S JUST BEEN REALLY FANTASTIC. LIKE, ALLIE ALREADY HAS A NUMBER OF FIVE K RACES UNDER HER BELT AND SHE’S TRAINING TO GET ANOTHER MEDAL AT THE ORLANDO HALF MARATHON. HER FIRST 13 MILE RACE. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO TAKE THE LEAP AND DO A HALF? WELL, YOU KNOW, I HAVE I’VE DONE A LOT OF FIVE K’S. I’VE GOTTEN MY TIMES DOWN A LOT. AND I JUST SEEMED LIKE THE NEXT STEP. RUNNERS CAN GET HURT FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, LIKE NOT HAVING GOOD TECHNIQUE, OVERUSE, USING OUR MUSCLES OR NOT HAVING THE PROPER SHOES RACE UP INTO IT. GO NOW, ALLIE DOESN’T WANT AN INJURY TO KEEP HER FROM DOING WHAT SHE LOVES, SO SHE SIGNED UP FOR THE ADVENT HEALTH RUNNING PERFORMANCE PROGRAM. I SAW A PAMPHLET ACTUALLY AT THE ADVENT HEALTH BOOTH AND IT TALKED ABOUT IT, AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING. AND NOW WE’RE HERE. AND WHAT ABOUT IT, LIKE, STUCK OUT TO YOU OR SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO DO DURING YOUR TRAINING? WELL, I’M SUCH A NEW RUNNER. LIKE I HAVEN’T EVEN BEEN RUNNING A YEAR. I STARTED DECEMBER OF LAST OR THIS YEAR. A LITTLE BIT OF A BEND IN THE KNEE. I FIGURED IT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO MAKE SURE I’M RUNNING CORRECTLY AND SAFELY AND, YOU KNOW, JUST KEEP KEEP AT IT AND KEEP IMPROVING. TRY TO HIT ME RIGHT IN THE HAND HERE. GOOD. DOUG ALLEN HAS A PHYSICAL THERAPIST FOR ADVENTHEALTH. HE TALKED WITH ME ABOUT THE PERSONALIZATION OF THE RUNNING PERFORMANCE PROGRAM. WE CAN HELP THAT RUNNER KIND OF MAKE MODIFICATIONS AND STRATIFICATIONS TO THEIR RUNNING PLAN IN ORDER FOR THEM TO CONTINUE TO RUN AND KEEP RUNNING AND TO BUILD ONTO THEIR RUNNING ENDURANCE. IT ALL STARTS WITH AN HOUR LONG ASSESSMENT THAT ALLIE RECENTLY COMPLETED RAISES HIGH AS WE CAN. WE DO A QUALITY MOTION ANALYSIS. WE ALSO DO A RUNNING ANALYSIS. MS. AND WE USE SOME TECHNOLOGY TO ANALYZE YOUR RUNNING BIOMECHANICS AND THEN WE DO A STRENGTH ASSESSMENT AND A FLEXIBILITY ASSESSMENT THAT’S REALLY SPECIFIC TO RUNNERS. I LEARNED SOME DIFFERENT EXERCISES LIKE STRENGTH IN THE ARCH OF MY FOOT AND TRY TO LIKE MAKE MY CADENCE A LITTLE LONGER OVER TIME. YOU KNOW, I’M JUST AMAZED WE CAN FIND OUT SO MUCH LIKE IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, KNOWLEDGE THAT ALLIE IS READY TO START PRACTICING. I’M JUST GOING TO STACK IT ONTO MY TRAINING THAT I ALREADY DO. AND THEN AFTER THE HALF MARATHON, DEFINITELY MAKE SURE I’M DOING IT A LOT MORE. BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE I’M STRONG ENOUGH TO, YOU KNOW, RUN FASTER AND STAY HEALTHY AND, YOU KNOW, HAVE THAT LIKE THE THE MUSCLE MASS TO PUSH MYSELF AS I RUN. ALL RIGHT.
