Former police chief goes above and beyond to make difference in Seminole County
From making meals for neighbors to running her community food market, a Seminole County woman goes above and beyond to put others first. In this week’s CommUNITY Champion, meet Jane Kelley, a woman with a heart to serve. You will often find Kelley chatting with her neighbors and helping at the Summer Loch Green Community Food Market. "I am very proud about how this turned out," Kelley said. Kelley is the manager of the market. From nonperishables to fresh fruits and veggies, the food is all free, and it really helps the 55-and-over community at Summer Loch Green in Casselberry. “Every Saturday for an hour and half we are open, and the residents can come and pick out something they would like. The lot rent keeps going up. We are on a fixed income most of us, so it is very helpful to have that extra to add to their food budget," Kelley said. Kelley organizes the donations for the market and leads dozens of volunteers. "Second Harvest every other week gives us fresh produce, and then we will get more dairy products from them and Publix gives us their produce," Kelley said. As a former police chief in Michigan, Kelley's role was to protect and serve. Even in retirement, her service to others continues. "That’s the way I was raised — in a Catholic household where you help your neighbors," Kelley said. On Sundays and during the week, you will find Kelley volunteering at St. Stephen Catholic Church. "Usually once a week, I donate my time to work at the office and then Sunday mornings during the service, I am an usher," Kelley said. As the activities chairperson, Kelley plans all kinds of outings — including box office tickets to the Winter Park Playhouse. Kelley attributes her giving spirit to her faithful foundation. Her neighbors surely appreciate the good deeds. "She does so much. She welcomes people who move into the neighborhood and she has a meet and greet with them once a month for coffee and doughnuts. She plans trips to planetarium and the Winter Springs theater. She does a whole lot for us, and everybody appreciates it, and I thought she should know that. It’s nice to have people that want to get involved,” neighbor Florence Green said. It was hard for Kelley to toot her own horn, but with all her time spent helping others, it's clear why Jane Kelley is a WESH 2 CommUNITY Champion. "I feel very honored that my friend did nominate me for that, but I don’t do this by myself. I really want to give a shoutout to all the volunteers who help on all the committees. I don't do it alone," Kelley said.
