Boston Bruins legend Zdeno Chara to compete in Ironman World Championship

Former Boston Bruins player Zdeno Chara, who captained the B's in each of his 14 seasons with the team, will be competing in the Ironman World Championship triathlon later this year.Chara, 47, finished the Ironman 70.3 Western Massachusetts triathlon in Springfield on Sunday with a time of 5 hours, 1 minute and 51 seconds. He swam 1.2 miles before biking 56 miles and running 13.1 miles for the 70.3-mile distance of a half Ironman.Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray, a member of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame, surprised Chara after Sunday's race with an invitation to compete alongside him at the 2024 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.The Ironman 70.3 is the latest endurance sport feat completed by Chara, who has already run half of the six World Marathon Major races.In April 2023, Chara completed his first Boston Marathon — and first marathon overall — just seven months after he retired from the National Hockey League. He finished the race in 3:38:23.Chara finished the New York City Marathon in November 2023 with a time of 3:19:19.He ran his second Boston Marathon in April, finishing in 3:30:52, and then completed his first London Marathon just six days later in 3:11:04.While Chara will be new to the Ironman World Championship triathlon, which is 140.6 total miles, McGillivray will be competing in that event for the 10th time. McGillivray first took on the Ironman World Championship in 1980 and competed in it for seven straight years (1983-89) before most recently finishing the triathlon in 2014.The 2024 Ironman World Championship is scheduled for Oct. 26 in Kailua Kona, Hawaii.
