Boston Bruins past and present hit links for 30th annual Cam Neely Invitational
OUR MATT REID HAS THE STORY FROM NEWTON. LOOK AT THAT BOY TEEING OFF FOR THE 30TH YEAR IN A ROW THIS MORNING. CAM NEELY AND BRUINS PAST AND PRESENT HIT THE LINKS AT THE CHARLES RIVER COUNTRY CLUB IN NEWTON FOR THE CAM NEELY INVITATIONAL, RAISING MONEY FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES DURING TREATMENT. UNFORTUNATELY, EVERYBODY’S BEEN TOUCHED BY CANCER IN ONE WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, SO, UM, YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY’S GOT STORIES IN THIS ROOM. IT’S PRETTY AMAZING. THIS IS 30 YEARS. IT WENT PRETTY QUICK, I CAN TELL YOU THAT. THAT INCLUDES NEELY HIMSELF, WHO STARTED HIS FOUNDATION IN HONOR OF HIS PARENTS, MARLENE AND MICHAEL NEELY, WHO BOTH DIED FROM CANCER. YOU KNOW, NOW OUR KIDS ARE 25 AND 24, AND YOU KNOW, JUST HAVE THEM GROW UP UNDER STANDING. WHAT IT MEANS TO GIVE BACK IS AN IMPORTANT THING FOR US AS A FAMILY. UM, YOU KNOW, THEY NEVER MET THEIR GRANDPA CURRENTS. SO IT’S A IT’S A WAY TO KIND OF KEEP THEIR MEMORY ALIVE. FOR FORMER TEAMMATES OF NEELY, THIS HAS BECOME AN ANNUAL EVENT. I THINK I’VE PLAYED IN JUST ABOUT EVERY YEAR. I MIGHT HAVE MISSED ONE BECAUSE OF A FAMILY TRIP, BUT IT’S BEEN AN AMAZING RUN 30 YEARS. AND EVEN THOUGH IT IS A CHARITY EVENT, THE COMPETITIVE JUICES GET FLOWING ANY TIME THE CURRENT AND FORMER BRUINS GET TOGETHER WELL, I WAS NOT PARTNERED WITH SWAY THE OTHER DAY AND WE STILL ALMOST WON. SO I’M GOING TO SAY HE’S ONE OF THE WORST. AND THEN I KNOW TUUKKA PLAYS A LOT OF GOLF, SO HE MIGHT BE A STICK OUT THERE TODAY. A CHANCE TO HIT SOME DRIVES IN SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION’S DRIVE TO HELP FAMILIES BATTLING THIS DISEASE. IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO COME OUT TO THESE EVENTS, BUT I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE WHAT IT’S FOR IN NEWTON MA
