Boston Bruins past and present hit links for 30th annual Cam Neely Invitational
For the 30th year in a row, Boston Bruins President Cam Neely and Bruins past and present teed off at Charles River Country Club in Newton for the Cam Neely Invitational.
The invitational raises money for cancer patients and their families during treatment.
“Unfortunately, everybody’s been touched by cancer in one way shape or form, so everybody’s got stories in this room,” Neely said.
That includes Neely himself who started his foundation in honor of his parents Marlene and Michael who both died from cancer.
“Now our kids are 25 and 24, and just have them grow up, understanding what it means to give back because it’s an important thing for us as a family. You know they never met their grandparents, so it’s a way to kind of keep their memory alive,” Neely said.
For former teammates of Neely, it’s become an annual event.
“I think I’ve played in just about every year. I might have missed one because of a family trip, but it’s been an amazing run, 30 years,” said former Bruins center Bob Sweeney.
Even though it is a charity event, the competitive juices get flowing any time the current and former Bruins get together.
“I was not partnered with (goalie Jeremy Swayman) Sway the other day and we still almost won, so I’m going to say he’s one of the worst, and then I know Tuukka (Rask, former goalie) plays a lot of golf,” said Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.
A chance to hit some drives and support the foundation’s drive to help families financially battling this disease.
“It’s always great to come out to these events, but I think it’s important to recognize what it’s for,” Carlo said.
