Kaaren and Tine Hayes

Kaaren Hayes, who retired from a 36-year career working for and leading Appalachian State University’s Parent to Parent Family Support Network on June 1, began her career providing outreach and support to families after her own son, Tine Hayes, struggled with a learning disability during his formative years.

BOONE — Not long ago, there was once a time in the state’s educational system when words like dyslexia, ADHD and other learning disorders were not part of the common lexicon.

In fact, it could be common for children struggling in school, whether academically or socially, to go years without receiving help or never realizing there was something holding them back.

Friends, family, colleagues and clientele held a celebration at the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences to celebrate the retirement of Kaaren Hayes after an impactful 36-year career.
