Lesser known fact: Before she was a supermodel, Bella Hadid was a champion horseback rider. And tonight, Hadid returned to her roots on Off-White’s Fall 2018 equestrian-inspired runway. Though she opened the show in a wasp-waisted denim bustier layered over a crisp white button-down, her endless limbs punctuated by tall, blue riding boots, it wasn’t just the clothes that recalled her riding days. Emphasizing her supernatural bone structure, Hadid’s dark, poker-straight lengths were swept back into a slick high ponytail that was hairstylist Jawara’s most literal take on the show’s equine inspiration. “It’s a little more pulled-up and chic—normally it would be low, low, low,” he explained backstage, smoothing back the hair with a Maison Pearson brush, then blasting the roots with a blow-dryer and L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray. “It’s how the Off-White girl would do a ponytail.”

But, seeking to highlight each girl’s individuality, Jawara bestowed upon the show a menagerie of different styles. Hiandra Martinez’s trademark cornrows, Dilone’s cropped curls, and Dorit Revelis’s asymmetrical cloud of spirals were all out in full force, while Kaia Gerber and Liya Kebede’s sleek manes were parted down the middle, falling neatly down the back. Because even with this season’s directional vision, individuality will always reign supreme on the Off-White catwalk.
