In many ways, summer is the season of the minimalist. “Less is more” is never more relevant than when the temperatures rise, and layers are cast off in favour of easy separates. Yet, in the summer dress department, where bold prints and block colours reign supreme, it can be an altogether different story.
Thankfully, minimalism has been on the rise over the last 12 months, and clean-lined dresses have made a bid for supremacy against the usual extroverted summer styles. Alongside the classic ’90s-inspired, cream-coloured dresses from the likes of & Other Stories, Leem and Raey, we’ve loved seeing the minimalist colour palette expand beyond its traditional black and white boundaries. Ferragamo and The Row have ensured that a pared-back spin on vibrant red is on the agenda for spring/summer 2023 – it makes for a chic pairing with beige FYI – while high street favourite, Cos, has been creating its oversized T-shirt dresses in pops of cobalt blue. Not your typical translation of “minimalism”, then.
