On Oscar night, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield set the internet alight when they arrived on stage together to present the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes (to Everything Everywhere All at Once’s the Daniels and Women Talking’s Sarah Polley, respectively). Their chemistry was evident as they announced the nominees, and as clips and backstage photos began to surface – of them whispering to each other during the acceptance speeches and stealing admiring glances – there was a deluge of tweets demanding that the two former Academy Award nominees collaborate on a project.

Just two days later, our prayers were answered: Deadline has confirmed that the pair are currently in negotiations to co-star in We Live In Time, a romantic drama from the BAFTA-winning director of Brooklyn, John Crowley. Benedict Cumberbatch is among the film’s executive producers, The Last Letter From Your Lover’s Nick Payne is penning the script, and although plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s been described by sources as both “funny” and “deeply moving”. Should all go to plan, shooting is expected to begin later this year.

It joins a long list of high-profile films to which Pugh is attached. The prolific 27-year-old, who was recently seen in The Wonder and Don’t Worry Darling, has three major releases heading to the big screen in 2023: the family drama A Good Person, directed by her ex-boyfriend Zach Braff; Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated Oppenheimer, with Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt; and the blockbuster sequel Dune: Part Two, also featuring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Austin Butler. Garfield, meanwhile, is coming off of a critically lauded turn in Under the Banner of Heaven, which earned him Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nods, and is set to play billionaire Richard Branson in the limited series Hot Air, which will follow the unlikely and stratospheric rise of Virgin Airways. As the Oscars stage proved, combining Pugh and Garfield’s star power is a no-brainer – and we can’t wait to see what they’ll produce together.
