Elle Fanning might play a shy teenager trying to find her voice in Teen Spirit, but on the promo trail for the indie film, the actor has channelled anything but a wallflower. For the Los Angeles premiere, Fanning wore a Barbie-pink Rodarte autumn/winter 2019 gown with a lace overlay that twinkled with embellishment. A matching Alice band with a neat bow drew the saccharine red-carpet look together.

Standing next to the star was Fanning’s older sister Dakota, who chose a little black dress with bow detailing at the neckline. It was discreet yet chic, and the pictures that emerged presented sisters with two different styles, but, most obviously, an elder sibling stepping back to let her little sister have her night.

The Fanning family has often looked to Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sister act behind Rodarte, for their public facing looks. Recently, the brand has been dabbling in bespoke red-carpet creations which generate publicity in a wider audience than its catwalk collections. For Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel tour wardrobe, the Mulleavys created a gown with white and silver beaded stars stitched into the tulle lengths as a nod to the official emblem of the superhero. It was a modern way to tap into the capes and block colours associated with the intergalactic film franchise and perfect for a female-fronted film that blew box office records.
