I have made an agreement with the company that i could go back to the cottages in october since i already was staying there for more then 5 months and needed to leave for the high season. So before leaving checked it again and all was good. So thinking that all is good i just write them an email asking if everything is all good. I received an email back saying that the price of the cottages are raised in price and the are only available in the month of novembre. This is so not good way to do business . so watch out with this company !!

We ate here on November 29th 2022 at lunchtime on the terrace and ordered to cheeseburgers and chips with bacon added to the burgers. First class !. And the 2 half bottles of white & rose wine were great too. The waitress who served us was very friendly.

When i was a kid (25 years ago) used to come her with my parents so i know the place well and maintain the tradition of coming back, at least once a year (most of the times for a long weekend). Now that i have my own family i just keep coming back. I usually come off season (June) when weather is reasonably good (could get unlucky) and prices are still reasonable.
It is a resort with all kinds of different apartments (they all have kitchenettes). There are apartments on 2 floor buildings, there are individual villas and you have the modern luxury apartments.
This time I chose the luxury apartments since I was travelling with several family members and this way it was possible to guarantee that the apartments were close to each other, since the luxury apartments aren’t scattered throughout the resort, like the other older apartments.
For the group of 13 adults and 3 kids (< 5 years old) I rented one T2 and two T1’s. In spite the indication “T2” and “T1” these luxury apartments actually have an extra room then indicated: The T2 actually has 3 rooms + living room with sofa bed and the T1 actually has 2 rooms + living room with sofa bed. Living room has joined kitchenette that has dish washer, washing machine, micro-wave, oven+burners, toaster, etc. There is also a LCD television and fireplace. The T1’s are all located on the ground floor. They have a large glass door with access to the terrace which has direct access to the grassy garden. There is a plastic table + chairs outside so you could have your meals here (you could also have them inside though). The T2’s are all located on the top floor and have 1 main terrace (obviously without direct access to the garden) where you could have your meals. The T2’s are very similar to the T1 except it is a duplex. The second floor of the T2 has a room +bathroom + private balcony. The T1 has a 1 public bathroom + 1 bathroom in the suite. The T2 has 2 private bathrooms + 1 public. The apartments have air conditioning but not in all rooms.
In June the luxury T2 cost 175 €/night for 6 people (with 3 individual rooms) and the T1 cost 145 €/night for 4 people (with 2 individual rooms). The living room has a sofa bed so you could have at least an extra person sleeping in the living room (although I think they charge extra). They put a baby bed (for 2 years old) in our room free of charge (although they announce charging 7,5 € a night for this). I booked through “www.booking.com” which comes out cheaper that through the official Pedras Del Rey site.
In the past have stayed at the other older apartments and villas. These are very cute looking and romantic from the outside but inside are a bit rustic. Since it is a big resort you have to watch out to where you stay since some apartments are closer to the beach others closer to the pool area (lots of kids) and others are more distant from these. The older apartments are ok (but opposite to the luxury) not really inviting to stay inside. Better indicated as a dorme which is also ok since you don’t come to sleep. All these apartments have a balcony or a terrace where you could have your morning breakfast or other meals. Since there is a lot of green/vegetation you have to beware bugs: mosquitos (specially at dawn and at night), I have spotted cockroaches in some of the older apartments (specially the ones on the ground floors)) and have asked to change. If you are not careful with sugar and bread you could also get ants storming in. But this is the risk of being in such a beautiful area in contact with such a nice garden and vegetation. The older apartments might or might not have air conditioning. Some of these apartments are privately owned so some could be better than others.
Whether it is for the older apartments/villas or luxury apartments, you could also try to reserve directly since the owners of the privately owned could choose to rent the apartments directly or through the resort’s management. You could find some of these apartments through www.homelidays.com
A 5-10 min walk away from the luxury apartments you have the central area of the resort where you could go for breakfast (to have your morning expresso coffee). In the central area you also have a supermarket where you could buy fresh bread (just out from the oven) and all other groceries. You have a newspaper kiosk, ATM (be aware since at times it could run out of cash in which case the alternative is Santa Luzia village), restaurant, bar, cafés, small playground for children, tennis court and pool.
Renting an apartment at Pedras Del Rey entitles you to a pass (per person) for the train that brings you to the beach (otherwise it is a 1,5 km walk to the beach). From the luxury apartments it is a 5-10 min walk to the pool area. And from here an extra 5-10 min walk to the train. The train takes about 5-10 min to the beach + the waiting (the train is slow so sometimes it is even faster to walk – 10-15 min if you are a fast walker). But kids just love the train! Once you arrive at the beach (Praia do Barril) you have a restaurant + café and a bikini shop. You also have toilets in this area. The beach is several kilometres long so if you walk a bit you will reach a deserted area where the nudists usually go.
The beach usually has the warmest waters of the Algarve usually at least 2 to 3º C warmer than Portimão. Usually there are no waves but I have surfed 1m waves here. The Algarve is relatively calm but when you get Southeast winds usually the temperatures of the water goes up and you could get big waves. Usually this could last 2-4 days, then the ocean calms down again, and the water gets cooler. In average you could get these waves once a month in the summer months (more often in the winter). From June to September water temperature could be between 18º C and 23º C. The weather in this area is also usually warmer and drier than the rest of the Algarve.
In the proximity (2-3 km) from Pedras Del Rey you have Santa Luzia village where you could go for supper (try “Canto Azul” for a nice romantic evening (average 20-30 €/person with wine) – the owner is a somewhat eccentric German woman + very nice husband – food is delicious and somewhat different, not the typical Portuguese plates). For cheaper meals, and typical fish, etc, you have several other restaurants in the area. Also not far (about 10—15 km away) from Pedras Del Rey you have the town of Tavira. Could also hop to Spain (Ayamonte) which is about 30 km away. Of course for these you need a car.
Overall the resort is great, especially for kids, especially because of the pool area, train ride to the beach and grassy gardens.
Also very romantic if you travel with your spouse/partner. In this case stay away from the pool and on the beach walk away from the crowd to the deserted parts.

After a day or so staying here, you pickup a theme that this place just needs a big chunk of investment.

The villas are rather run down and not matching the decor on the TUI site. Lots of little bodge repairs with exposed mains, lights fittings hanging on by 1 of the 4 screws, missing cupboard doors etc. some of the pictures are also of an unrelated restaurant business down by the beach.

The beds themselves are terribly soft and uncomfortable and the “sofa” is just a single bed with two pillows.

Unlike other guests, we were lucky enough to get aircon but only on one floor. Would have been unbearably hot for anyone without this!

While the cooker was obviously a recent replacement, the kitchen utensils aren’t complete. No bowls, no coffee jug, no kettle, no tumblers or wine glasses, corkscrew not the right size to extract a cork etc. the list goes on. If you’re looking to have breakfast or an evening meal in the villa, you’ll struggle.

The pool itself is a lovely temperature but very cloudy and remained so all week. Looks like the filter isn’t up to the job at hand and needs upgrading.

While there’s a lovely area for lounging round the pool, there’s a chronic shortage of seats and parasols. You really need to be at the pool before 9:30 to reserve a parasol or you won’t get one all day. There’s easily enough space to triple the number of loungers and parasols and each day you see a steady stream of disappointed faces looking for shade. Some other reviewers have mentioned paying for loungers. This is no longer the case but you need someone to be poolside when they setup and unlock the loungers.

The Nora eating area serves basic food but be prepared for a really long wait for service. The staff don’t seem to scan the room so you’re best off walking up to the bar to order and pay.

Overall, I think we were lucky with the room and looking at other reviews and pics, I can understand guests frustration and it could have been worse. As a family, we enjoyed the week and learned how to work around the issues but it’s not somewhere I’d recommend and won’t be coming back.

We’ve been to similarly priced accommodation in the Algarve on previous years so it’s definitely possible to get better value for your money

A lovely location let down by terrible standards. The accommodation was grim and very dated. It was badly equipped without things like kettles, corkscrews, hairdryer, scissors etc. We saw rats circling the properties which was probably due to the overfilled rubbish bins which were not emptied regularly. The food in the main eating area was awful. The chips, which come with most meals, were easily the worst chips I have ever seen, they had no potato in them, they were like poor quality crisps. This place is ultimately let down by its leadership and management, there is a lack of staff in some busy areas like the bar (only one bar attender) and the restaurant. We loved our holiday in Portugal and met so many friendly Portuguese until we arrived here.

Bought a 3 night stay here 4 my hubbies xmas present. Of course i went too lol. Staff brilliant. Nice young man in restaurant very proffessional and friendly. Lovely welcome on check in. We Had booked a studio. But we got a free upgrade to a 1 bed villa. It was perfect. Immaculate too. Its quite a few miles from tavira maybe 4 or 5. But theres a bus service €2.35 we used that twice and taxi once. €10 . Beach is lovely get the free train to it. Would highly recommend Pedras del Rai.

I was a little dubious about going on holiday anywhere in October but I had one of the most enjoyable and relaxing holidays ever.

We arrived late at night and the staff were all geared up to meet us. We were shown to our room which was a fabulous split level apartment with all the facillities.

My hustband and I were both extremely impressed with the friendliness of the staff, they really could not do enough for us.

The maid service was excellent our beds were made everyday and clean towels and linen every other. The on site supermarket was surprisingly well stocked and the piano bar was extremely tasteful. The restaurant had a varied menu and everthing I ate there was very good. A word from the wise however, if you like you steak medium ask for it well done. I asked for my fillet steak to be medium/rare and I got blue.

Barille beach is the one local to the apartments. You take a charming little train to it which is free to guests. I have to say it was beautiful. The sand was white and clean and it streches for miles. you could sit in relative solitude and I would go are far as to say it was comparable to the carribean.

Tavira town is beautiful and unspoilt, the buildings are elegant and original. The art gallery is worth a look as is the camera obscura.

Whilst there we found a fantastic restaurant A Ver Tavira, situated next to the castle. We went three times in all over the two weeks and on each occasion the food was excellent. I would heartily recommend it without question. It is just a shame that there is nowhere like it closer to home.

I am glad to say we will be returning again in may 07 it is booked and I can't wait

nice little two storey apartment with balcony from bedroom and patio on ground level from rthe kitchen dining area.
no microwave or toaster but effective oven and grill and two rings.good cleaning staff and regular towel changes .reception staff had good english though mostly the clients were german and dutch. . The restaurant and warm fire was good also has snack bar which i didnt try. there is a on site shop a bit pricey and a self service laundry
lovely grounds which were being upgraded and maintined while we were there. there was a lot of activity re the up keep. our cheaper off peak rates compensated for tsome of the bustle and noise of trimmers and lawn mowers.swimming pool ( closed for up keep) there is also childrens play area and a lovely aviary .this complex is very close to Barril Beach and a free train ride across the 15 minut walk way, which could saves 2 euro daily. and free orang juice from orange trees!

We have just returned from a 10 day stay at Pedras and would recommend it all the way. We have an 18month old in tow and were looking for some tranquility and calm to relax in the sun and we certainly found it here.

The Complex:
It is tucked away in a lovely spot on the edge of the Ria Formosa national park, which stretches out to the sea. In fact we asked for a sea view(not really expecting to get one) and our apartment looked out over the flat wetlands towards the sea, a wonderful sight with the sun rising! At high tide, the sea was only about 100 metres away.
The accommodation is made up of many small bungalows (the apartments) and some larger villas (I think these are mainly small studios), all whitewashed and covered in burgonvilia and surrounded by palm trees, eucalyptus trees and hibiscus shrubs. Idyllic. The grounds are well looked after and it feels like a little village, the atmosphere certainly reflects this too.
There is a supermarket which has a fairly good selection, including fresh bread daily. They will even deliver your shopping for you! Although we didn't use this service.
There are a lot of cats roaming around the complex and although this didn't bother us, we did see some cat poo that hadn't been cleaned up.

The Apartment
Basic, clean and homely! The first SC place we've stayed where the Sharp knife is actually sharper than the spoons! AND there was a corkscrew. The kitchen was generally well equipped and we needn't have taken the travel kettle. There is air conditioning, but we found it a bit chilly to have it on at night, so we were glad to have packed a travel fan. We requested a cot and they honoured this, although we didn't know whether to expect one or not as we booked through another agency so if you're in the same position, it might be worth contacting them directly to check they have one available. It will save lugging your own all the way there.
The apartment was clean and we had service 8 days out of 11 and this wasn't a problem at all. It's actually refreshing to be somewhere where the towels aren't changed every day, cos its not necessary.
The only thing we found was that ants were liable to descend if we left anything out, the slightest crumb makes for good ant bait. But we simply kept all food in the fridge or clipped up in the cupboard and kept the surfaces clean.

The Service/amenities
The reception staff can't do enough to help. We found them incredibly helpful and friendly. We arrived at night and they called a colleague to take us in the minibus directly to our apartment and they collected us on our last day. They also spent a long time one day investigating trips to go snorkelling along the coast and this wasn't too much trouble for them.
The service in the bars and restaurant was very good as well.
We found the restaurant food very good, but a little over priced, as was the cafes at the beach. They have a captive market because it's quite a walk to Santa Luzia for alternatives. It was delicious in the restaurant though, and they were welcoming and friendly and didn't seem to mind having an 18month old running around.
We had breakfast at Bar Nora once and this was fine. Buffet continental, croissants, cheese, sami, eggs, cereal, bread, yogurt. Sort of thing you'd expect. It was €6.50 each and coffee was included, although we ordered coffee from the waiter and they charged extra. He also didn't mention the buffet breakfast and just gave us the normal menu, which incidently is not very good. If you want the buffet, just go up stairs and help yourself or ask about it specifically. We made lunch out of it too, so it was good value!
The pool is lovely, really clean and a relaxed feeling. Only open to residents so it didnt get over crowded. We always found sun loungers and a parasol available and its a safe place to set up camp and let little one run around a bit.

The beach and train:
The beach is a 20 minute walk through the wetlands and sand dunes, an easy flat walk with walkway, easy enough with a buggy although narrow if you have a double buggy or a wheelchair. Very pleasant walk. The train is a great alternative and great fun for kids without taking anything away from the peaceful surroundings. It's free for residents at Pedras if you show your card.
The beach is lovely, flat and far reaching with a shallow entrance to the sea and at low tide, it gives a great area to explore if you're a toddler!
The only draw back we found was that it isn't a great spot for snorkelling, I think this is something to be found further to the west where the jagged coastline is.
We found the cafe on the expensive side for what you get, but the tapas may be better value, something we didn't try. The self service restaurant was great value, recommend having the fresh fish as they grill there and then in front of you, but other hot dishes are pre prepared and Sat in a bain marie. The swordfish and the sardines were amazing.

Local area
Santa Luzia is the nearest village, approx 30mins stroll away, quiet and pretty and a few more fish restaurants here, we didn't try them.
We took a boat ferry to Ilha de Tavira, a lovely little beach to spend a couple of hours on.
Tavira is a bus ride, you can get the bus on site and costs a little over €2 each. It stops in the town centre, or outside the railway station if you want to go further afield, although train service isn't very regular, so you spend most of the day waiting for a train.
We visited Olhao down the coast, but wouldnt recommend it. It's a small fishing port with much less charm than Tavira and SLuzia and feels a bit more tacky. Although you can do some nice looking boat trips from here. The train is much cheaper than the bus.

Generally, this a wonderful retreat for those looking for a tranquil alternative to the boozy nightlife offered further along the west coast of the Algarve. It seems to attract Portuguese families and retired people and is wonderfully peaceful. Everyone has been very friendly and we haven't felt awkward about having an active and sociable toddler with us, although equally it doesn't feel over run with children as they
were are all so well behaved and just played with each other.
We would certainly recommend Pedras del rei and may even return one day. The locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming and we had many conversations where we didn't even share a single common word!!
Lovely.

I know it sounds a bit tragic but my wife and I have been staying at Pedras for the past 10 years.
We both find it so relaxing and restorative after the years toil.
The staff are unfailingly friendly and the accommodation although basic is clean and quite cosy, often offering tranquil views across eh village.
The beach is second to none IMHO and my wife and I have visited Antigua and Barbados so it must be good.
The old town of Tavira, easily reached by a bus from outside reception is considered by many to be the most beautiful on the Algarve and has retained much of the gentle charm of old Portugal.
Take a stroll along the quayside tiptoeing round the fisherman's nets and watch the brightly coloured tuna boats as they sail upstream to the sea.
If you like seafood then you have to try the Cad D'Oro restaurant situated on the quayside in Rua Jose Pires Padinha. The tuna steak with onions and the cataplana are to die for.
If meat dishes are your bag then a short 15 minute walk from Pedras is the fishing village of Santa Luzia which boasts 4 or 5 excellent restaurants the best of which is the Canto Azul run by a lovely Dutch couple Leoni and Gert who cook arguably the best steak and pork dishes in Portugal. Cheap too!
If you do pay them a visit tell them that Clive and Gill recommended them and you never know I might get a free feed out it. LOL.
In short if you crave a relaxing break with good beaches and excellent food and wine Pedras is for you.
