Unlike the Genocide Memorial in the center of town, this museum is focusing more on how the genocide was ended. While the UN forces retreated only rescuing foreign nationals, the RPA (Rwandan Patriotic Army) guerillas took charge using military force effectively to stop the killings and defeat the government army.
It becomes very clear from the detailed description of battle on the info boards in the museum that the RPA /RPF leaders were quite able to plan realistically, setting clear objectives, ensuring discipline of their militants and organizing relief for the victims. The experience of fighters and leadership was later used to reorganize the Rwandan state, as we now know it. Perhaps the best performing country in the Sub-Saharan region.
A pity the entrance fee of 16,000 RF (13 USD) is exorbitant. It includes a guide.
The museum is dimly lit making it difficult to read all the texts and see the pictures and maps.
Bring your passport as you have to register at the entry of the parliament compound.

Great museum, so glad I went. Fills the gaps that the Genocide Memorial & Camp Kigali don’t cover - exactly how the genocide was stopped. Quality exhibition. Bonus is going to the roof of the Parliament building to see where army defended building. View across Kigali fantastic. Excellent guide - Was 16,000 RFr including the guide. Taxi from downtown drove me, waited 90 mins and drive me back for 20,000. Take passport.

Managed to visit this site, while in kigali, gives an interesting In site on what they are doing in regards to the genocide.
It costs 30000 RWF to enter, but well worth the money, guide explains everything and get to go on the rooftop to see where all the shooting took place and you see hotel Rwanda also ,where the film was shot..

A must see in Kigali is the genocide museum. It’s a very sad place but tries to explain how and why the genocide happened. We had only an hour to cover it, but we would have liked more time there. The exhibits are written in multiple languages so we were glad that we didn’t rent the audio tour. We just made a substantial donation to support the museum.
Once again, what happened illustrates man’s inhumanity to man. It’s just so hard to understand how neighbors turned on neighbors, just like they did in Germany during the Holocaust. It’s a lesson about indoctrination and hate and could happen in America based on the unhealthy political climate. Hopefully, citizens of our country would rise up and stop the hate, but I imagine the people of Rwanda didn’t expect neighbors would attack and kill their neighbors with machetes either, sometimes murdering the godparents of their children and innocent kids. Hard to believe and completely impossible to accept.

This facility is not worth your time if you’re already going to the Genocide Museum. This one only has pictures, no exhibits. It’s in dark hallways, making it difficult to see and read. It’s really dark!

We have a guy who spent over an hour walking around the museum, giving us a full history from the beginning of colonial times, and what led to the genocide through the post-genocide. We learned so much here and so many displays, it was definitely the best genocide museum with seen in Rwanda. To top it off, we went to the roof of what used to be the parliament building where the minority parliamentarians were staying when the genocide broke out, and you get a full view of Kigali and saw where soldiers defend it. I’m surprised this is not the number one attraction in Kigali, it should be for any tourist who cares about more than just gorillas.

A detailed look at the days after the genocide started and the rebel army intervened. The main genocide is much better at telling the whole story and still covers in brief the information at this museum

An exorbitant price of 14000 francs for very limited uncreative content. Motorcycle cabs don't know the place. A real disappointment, this is a crucial subject for Rwanda which deserves the best presentation. This is the opposite unfortunately.
