If you want to hide from the buzz of everyday life you MUST come here. Here you’d want to wake up 6am to catch dawn and see Matterhorn lights up like a candle. Here you’d want to set an alarm at 3am to gaze at the stars. Oh the stars .... there are so many so bright!! You will never be tired here of hiking up and down to Zermatt ,the possibilities are for everybody! The hotel is cute , we stayed in a suite with so many windows our jaw dropped. Room is huge and the bathroom so big and clean ! There’s a shower with huuuge pressure you’ll never want to get out and a bathtub with a huge window overlooking Monte Rosa. Free water (4 small bottles) are given daily . Breakfast buffet has plenty of choices and there’s also a selection of hot plates freshly cooked. I only hated the coffee machine ... it never gave me a good cappuccino ahahahahah. Dinner is also included in the rate and has a salad buffet and a soup then a selection of main plates and dessert . Food always very good !
Staff is always nice and friendly with a sincere smile on their faces.
I’d love to come back and I recommend this beautiful hotel !!

Let me start by saying I am a mountain madness fan....I love the Alps! I dream of Everest and for a few nights, you can feel like an Everest explorer, watch the actual stars flickering in the sky and experience absolute total silence if you are willing to brave the cold in the middle of the night and wander outside! It’s an amazing hotel with impeccable personal service. We had a bit apoxia and they supplied us with O2 canisters that have a respirator face mask and glucogen chewies for my daughter. The dinner was fabulous and traditional but you will not have a usual appetite at 15,000 ft. We did need to move down to the village due to mountain sickness but they smoothly transitioned us to their sister hotel in the village with no change fee! This is a once is a lifetime experience. Wished we could have toured the observatory, but that’s why we will have to go back! Needless to say, it’s close to the ski lift as in meters and a cog train does most of the heavy climbing.

My partner and I went to the Kulmhotel Gornergrat for one night and really enjoyed our trip! The view from the hotel is breathtaking, as well as the view from the room on the Matterhorn. The staff was very helpful and attentive and did their best to suit our vegan diet. The room was very clean and spacious, and the bathroom newly renovated. The only weak points were the not so harmonious room decoration and the very expensive price.

You pay a steep price for the staying in comfort at the closest location possible to the Matterhorn. The hotel is historic and totally surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Once the day-trippers have left and quietness descends it can be magical at sunset and again at sunrise. We were very happy with our Matterhorn facing room (called Dom, after the peak of the same name). All rooms are named after mountain peaks. The only shortcoming was the very poor quality of bathroom towels. The hotel appears to be understaffed. Also, the food served was quite ordinary.

We had a very unpleasant experience at dinner with one of the waiters being positively rude and racist for something as simple as mayonnaise for fries. We had to call him to request for the mayonnaise which never arrived for over 15 minutes, though he went on serving around us. We had to call him loudly. His response thereafter was very arrogant and his replies very rude. He appeared to be very courteous with the majority German speaking guests though not with us. His behaviour towards us as compared to the others was clearly racist.

We called the restaurant manager and asked if he was aware of the incident. He said he wasn’t. But when we raised the issue his first reaction was “Every other guest is happy with his service”!!! When we narrated the series of incidents which showed this man's behaviour to be clearly RACIST then the manger was a bit perturbed but kept denying. We asked the restaurant manager to get this man to apologise to us, but this never happened.

We also raised the matter with the front desk staff the next morning, who seemed to be aware of what had happened the previous evening, but they tried to brush it aside. They were apologetic only after we explained what had happened. (To our dismay the same man was serving breakfast the next morning and avoiding us.)

We are very widely travelled and such an unpleasant incident has never happened anywhere earlier. A hotel of this stature deserves better quality of staff and service towards international guests of other races.

Naturally, the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps has outstanding views of the Matterhorn and glaciers. And, after the day visitors depart, you have the tranquility of the entire hotel facility for yourself and the other guests. All of the staff, restaurant and front desk are professional, friendly and make your stay extremely pleasant. The chef and his kitchen team prepare top quality meals throughout the day. Breakfast starts with a standard buffet but you can add omelets to order. Lunch is either a self-service buffet or taken in the restaurant with more unexpected dishes; we both had the liver and sweetbreads entree that was spectacular, and I don't like liver (or I didn't until that lunch). Dinner for the hotel guests is a fixed four course menu. Our first dinner was porcini "plins" raviolis and a Valais trout fillet. The next night featured a Waldorf salad with smoked duck breast and lamb racks with a nut crust. Hint: reservations are not needed but if you want a quiet dinner for two, ask to be seated in the small dining room with a window view of the Matterhorn. And, ask your server for recommendations on pairing the restaurant's excellent select of Valais wines wit dinner. The buffet breakfast and dinner are included in daily rate.
Our room was a normal European size for two with a view of the Matterhorn, modern and tastefully decorated.
We are already making plans for a return visit. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate my sixtieth birthday, and had a lovely time. This hotel is located at the top of the mountain at just over 10,000 ft which is something to be aware of when booking. You may suffer from altitude sickness as we did , and it took a good 24 hrs to acclimatise. Fortunately we were there for 3 nights , so we were able to enjoy it. The rooms are well equipped , modern and very clean , but fairly small, and of course the view is amazing. You don’t come here for the food, and as others have said , it’s average, Breakfast is lovely, a good buffet and eggs cooked to order. Dinner however was a little disappointing, mainly due to the fact that the chef consistently over cooked the meat , to such an extent that on the last night the beef was inedible. It looks like ( in our opinion) parts of the meals are cooked in advance and reheated , leading to dry and at times very overcooked food. On my birthday however , the meal was lovely and the staff really made an effort for me, a lovely private table with a view of the Matterhorn, impeccable service from our waiter Peter, topped of with a special dessert from the chef. This hotel is very expensive, not unsurprising given the location, but for this price I would have expected more attention to detail from the chef. However when the trains stop and you get the top of the mountain with just you and a few other guests it is absolutely stunning, I even got up early to see sunrise one morning, and along with several other guests , had a spectacular view .

The cafeteria is a poor option, unless you are lucky enough to get the food, when it is prepared. It is good for drinks and you can sit outside on the deck, if the weather is suitable. At the same level is the restaurant, for which this writer cannot comment. On a clear day, the Matterhorn is majestic.

One of the top hotel experiences in Switzerland. Amazingly located, a small but great hotel with beautiful, simple rooms, very clean and accommodating, with jaw-dropping views over the alpine peaks. The staff is super friendly, the food is sourced locally and promotes local cuisine. A great experience, I wish to be back next year.

It is not a wellness hotel. But that's not why the guests come. The location, the view and the uniqueness are unique. That also has its price.
But everyone is very friendly, it is nicely furnished and clean, there is good food and drinks.

But everyone is very friendly, it is nicely furnished and clean, there is good food and drinks.

The only drawback is the cost of the Gornergratbahn. In other destinations, guests can use all the cable cars etc. for free.

If you now add these costs per person, Zermatt and especially this beautiful place, will be available to a limited number of guests.

Hotel location is superior and hospitality is very outstanding. Staff at the reception and the restaurant are super friendly and they make me feel like home during my stay. I was very lucky to join a tour to the observatory and learn some astronomical knowledge from the expert. Staying in the room with Matterhorn view is one of the things to do on my bucket list and I was so pleasant to see the breathtaking landscape from my hotel room and beautiful starry night on restaurant's terrace. Breakfast and dinner are included. You can also store your skis in the ski room conveniently. Highly recommended!

Yes they are operational and I think open once a month on a Thursday evening (run by a university??). I know they are working because when we stayed at the hotel we were given the offer of joining in but declined as there was poor visibility that evening and also the lecture was spoken mainly in German. Hope this helps. The Gornergrat Hotel is an amazing experience in itself as is the train journey there.

Xmas in Zermatt means snow and temperature around -5 to +5 Celsius. Visit Gornergrat for lunch only, unless you are a skier.

Is it worth staying at this hotel for 2 nights?
Answer from msmountain
Canada77 contributions34 helpful votes
Definitely stay 2 nights. That always increases your chances of getting spectacular sunrises/sunsets in the mountains. We found we had one overcast day/evening with poor views and one astounding day/evening worth taking hundreds (!) of pictures. Walking around the area before the first train/after the last train is amazing (and there are steinbock who come very close when there are few people around).

How far is the train stop to the actual hotel? Is it easy to carry your suitcase there?
Answer from JC_London77

It is quite a short walk and there is a lift to the ground floor of the hotel. Another lift will take you to the reception if you go via the inside doors. If you veer to the right, you can enter through the outdoor area.

It's about 150m from the train station to the hotel (ascending). If you tell the hotel reception about your arrival time, we are sure somebody from the hotel staff will pick you up at the station. So you have no problems with the luggage.
