Hands down the best place you will be able to find in Vavau for having a paradise holiday with amazing food, great people AND LOTS OF WHALES.
The island /resort is family owned and they are the nicest people you could hope for with an amazing hand for cooking - and I mean really amazing! Every meal by Otto and Uli blew our mind! On the whale swims they will find you the best whale encounters (only 4 people on the boat means you get to swim every time). Henry was the best Captain / Whale spotter we could’ve asked for & Jess our amazing whale guide who showed us that even after 10 years with the whales in Tonga you will not loose your love and excitement for them very quickly became our friend.
From the first second we felt like being home. We did not quite know what to expect before we arrived but we had everything we needed there (including great wifi!). They are also very well equipped with snorkelling gear (much better than what we saw with other operators) and you can take the SUPs and Kajaks there anytime you want to tour around the lagoon and go snorkelling.
Everything on the island has been designed with a lot of love and thought and has been build by the family themselves - the atmosphere is simply amazing.
Lastly. You will see whales everywhere (not just on your whale swim tours). At breakfast, lunch, dinner from the common area or if you are lucky like us watching a heat run from the overwater fale. You simply cannot miss them. This is the place to be if you are visiting Vavau, love whales, good food and the amazing nature blue lagoon offers. We will try everything to be back soon <3

There are few places that I don't want to leave and return home to but this is definitely one of them! What an incredible experience, we loved absolutely everything about our stay here. The Island and lagoon are just gorgeous, the food is amazing and plentiful, the whale swims were magical and most of all, the family who run Blue Lagoon are just beautiful. Thank you so much to Uli, Henry, Otto, Tapu, their mum (I didn't catch her name) and Allie for being so welcoming and making our stay truly memorable....along with my new four legged friends! I love that Blue lagoon is locally owned and operated as it's important for me to support local when I travel.
If you're looking for five star, mod-con luxury, this isn't for you, but if you like getting back to basics in nature, being surrounded by good food and good people, with comfortable, clean rooms that have an amazing view... then this place can not be beat. We will definitely be back!

Just had the privilege of staying several days here and it’s hard to put into words just how special this place is. It is exactly what every tropical beach resort attempts to recreate but just can’t seem to achieve. What you’ll find here is real beauty, hospitality, adventures, world class meals, amazing whale swimming with guides who truly care, and so much more.

It’s the real deal and we’ll definitely be coming back to the Blue Lagoon!

Blue Lagoon Tonga is a true ' Robinson Crusoe ' experience.

The resort is family owned & operated. If you are expecting all the mod cons that a large European resort offers then this is not for you. Blue Lagoon is for the traveler who is at ease with nature & laid back. Blue Lagoon makes you feel as though you have come to visit family. It's so peaceful, and many an hour can be wasted just by gazing at the view.
Since our last visit in August 2010 the resort has added 2 new Fales, they are located near to the Restaurant & have an excellent balcony view of the Lagoon & outer reef. It was a Pleasure to stay in the Moby Dick & gaze at the marine life below. We found the room to be comfortable & had some great storage. To awake each morning to that view was just a pure delight.

Rooms - All rooms are individual and offer a rustic charm. Heated gas water showers are easy to use and electric is on from 5pm onwards in the Fale (via a generator).

Food - well what can I say, Feleti's meals are not for weight watchers. We have returned well feed & watered & are now trying to loose our Feleti Kilos for Christmas. There is no Menu you sit at your table and are served a feast at breakfast, a light lunch, and 3 course Dinner.

Whale Watch - Excellent 5 star. Tabu is their registered guide & Oli is the boat operator. Tongan law dictates that only 4 persons plus 1 guide can be in the water at any one time, and Blue Lagoon only takes 4 passengers out. So when you found your whale you are able to swim at YOUR leisure with these majestic creatures. We witnessed other Whale watch tours had upwards of 12/15 on their boat so your time with the whales was dictated by the boat , not good.

Lagoon - Snorkeling is a delight here, and we could see some improvement to the corals that were devastated by the Tsunami a few years back. Its very safe for children of all ages.

Recommendations - Reef Shoes & your own snorkel gear. Mosquitoes are evident all day but if you keep the mosquito coils burning all day in the rooms they didnt bother us too much. It would be useful to take some mossie room spray & body spray with you if you are worried.

Vaule for Money - Great value, considering you are in the middle of no-where & everything has to be shipped in.

Overall we would not hesitate in recommending Blue Lagoon, it suits us as a family as we love nothing more than to sit & chill & snorkel. This will not be our last visit and hopefully they will have us back.....lol

A big big thank-you BlueLagoon

My husband and I went to Blue Lagoon via Whaleswim last year. Its a real journey to get there and it's worth it. Its the sort of place that you see on tv and think "I'll never get to a place like that". .....truely a wonderful experience of being on the edge of the World.. Remote doesn't explain it, but you really are on a tropical island. Everything is hand made by the owner whom we were allowed to call "Freddi" who made us feel incrediably welcome and really took care of us. He was full of crazy stories about his life on the island and his carefree children. The accommodation is quirkey and rustic, but very clean and there is nothing that was too much trouble. The breakfasts were fantastic..I've never had pancakes like it. Evening was spent eating diner at the large handmade table with candles. My husband has been fishing and came home with a large fish that was prepared for the evening meal. You couldn't beat it.
I was 6 months pregnant for this trip, and I feel very lucky that we took the chance and went, there are note many places like this left.

My husband Mike and I stayed at Blue Lagoon resort in August 2014. We bought a ten night package including seven days in the water. This was our fourth time snorkeling with whales in this area and by far our best such holiday. We stayed in the Moby Dick fale, which is over the lagoon, and we loved it. By Australian standards it's fairly basic, but fulfils my requirements: a hot shower available all day, and a toilet. Think, cosy! The view over the lagoon is wonderful; also the bed was really comfortable. The electricity was off for some of the day, which wasn't a problem. We slept under the mosquito net provided, but didn't see even one mosquito.

Here are some reasons why it was so special. (Mike would immediately say: Feleti's cooking! Which is super.) The resort is where the whales are: there's no trip from town at the beginning and the end of each day. There are always only four guests in the boat, so we didn't have to take turns at swimming with the whales. (I think this is really important.) Jess, who was with us, is a marine scientist, so able to find whales, advise us while we were in the water, and tell us lots about these "gentle giants". Being in the water so close to the whales is amazing: I have no words to capture this experience. The family are great: Tabu is lovely, Henry and Otto great out on the water. On our last trip out Otto took an amazing video on my camera; it's hard for our friends to believe we did this.

I have only one suggestion - a word of warning maybe. This isn't the place to learn to snorkel! We jump into water, which is deep and occasionally can be a bit choppy. If you didn't snorkel before maybe go to a dive shop, buy a mask and snorkel, and learn in a pool first.

Thanks heap Feleti and family: we're already making a booking for next year!

The trip from the mainland by fast speedboat with Ulli and Otto gave us a glimpse of the whale activity we were here to experience and the passion and excitement they shared . Thirty minutes later we entered the lagoon ,WOW !! Aptly named Blue Lagoon Resort. The natural beauty is stunning !! We were greeted at the jetty with big warm hugs from Feleti as our Mum's arrival was groundbreaking . At 75 she was to become the oldest to whale swim at Blue Lagoon.
Our Family Fale was rustic, comfortable, very clean, fun and with the most amazing deck over the lagoon to hear the waves crash under us and share drinks at sunset. Meals were fantastic delicious and huge.
The true beauty began with the care, enthusiasm and professional service we were given through Tabu, Jess and the boys on our 3 day x 6 hour private whale swim. Unimaginable ability to find the whales, their excitement and reverence ; then GO GO GO in we went. Mum felt so safe with Tabu and with her got to experience one of her top 3 ever .Unbelievable !! My sister Mum and I will never forget our Blue Lagoon experience .
Look beyond the 5 star and experience the real beauty

We have just returned from our second trip to Blue Lagoon and we can't wait to return next year. Feleti, Stapu, Uli, Otto, Henry, Sam, Marietta and Anna all made our trip an experience to treaure.

Where to start? The place itself is pure paradise, Feleti's food is out of this world, the encounter with 3 very social humpbacks on my daughter's tenth birthday is something she and her four year old sister will never forget and the people who make it all happen are a pleasure to be around.

It's the sort of place you want to shout out to the rest of the world how wonderful it is.......although we do worry that the secret might get out and we might have to book years in advance to secure our booking for the next time we visit.

We recently stayed at Blue Lagoon. A lovely secluded island off the mainland of Vava'u.

Snorkelling - the snorkelling is good. There are a range of fish types and plenty of fish life. There are a resident family of turtles, which you may be lucky to spot in the morning or afternoon. The reef was completely damaged in a hurricane a few years ago, so some parts of the reef are dead and other parts are clearly just recovering. The dead parts look like an underwater wasteland.

Whale Watching - is a must. If you are staying in whale season make sure you organise a trip out. While it can be nerve racking, the experience is amazing. This is one of the only locations in the world where humans can swim with whales on organised trips.

Food - the food is plentiful and usually delicious. A range of fish, fruit, and meats were served. The set menu has the same type of breakfast each day with eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit, toast, pancakes and coffee. Lunch is usually lighter, with servings of grilled sandwiches, salads etc. Dinner is 3 course and usually delicious, on one occasion our fish was only partly cooked and then returned too tough to eat.

Hosts - this is a family run resort. Tabu is the main communication with customers and is friendly and usually helpful. Her brothers work on the boat and around the island doing odd jobs. Feleti is the owner/father and is also the main chef. He is a loud person who talks a a lot and listens less, on more than one occasion we listened to him loudly berate his staff while we sat enjoyed a quiet meal.

Fales - are basic and provide the minimum. Don't expect too much, the power is available only in the early morning and evenings. The water cannot be drunk, but bottled water is available at the restaurant for $5. We enjoyed the simplicity of the room, and the view was perfect. The only disappointment for us was rats - we mistakenly left some coconut on our table and rats came in and ate it during the night. We mentioned this to Tabu and were told to keep no food out and that the rat shouldnt come back. In fact, it came back every night for the next four days until we complained again and apparently rat bait was used around outside the fale. We were given an old rusty trap and I disposed of 2 dead rats on 2 nights. I would suggest that this is a problem the island must look into dealing with, maybe a few cats might help or at least baiting around all of the fales. You will see rats, hear them at night without a doubt.

There are a few fales that are clearly in disrepair, which are not open. The old restaurant is an eye sore - it looks like its been hit by a tornado. We walked past this every day on our way to the new restaurant.

We recommend this place for its natural beauty, its warm water, its fish life, whale watching, good food. It just needs some hard work to meet a higher standard.
