We visit Foxton Beach regularly for birding, but on this occasion decided to stay for two nights right near the esplanade. We chose Foxton Beach Motel for its location, and it is a prime choice. Much rather be here on Dawick St than the motor camp. The rooms are spacious with parking right outside and good afternoon sun on the chairs outside the room. Nothing fancy, but everything is clean and tidy. Fully equipped kitchen and a decent size fridge with proper freezer compartment. We ate out at the local takeaways, but everything was there if we had decided to eat in. WiFi was good. The motel wasn't full so it was nice and quiet during our stay. Room was a little cold when we arrived but there is a good heater; the room quickly warmed up and was soon quite toasty. The bed was fine, but my only complaint was the pillows. Maybe a personal preference but we found them far too hard - if we booked in again we would probably bring our own.

A very clean, comfortable and spacious unit with every thoughtful detail considered. The kitchen was really well-stocked with every utensil you could possibly need.

The motel is in a lovely spot with the coastal walkway just a few steps away.

Nice clean room, all conditions and terms etc outlined in confirmation e-mail. Friendly owners, rules etc clear on noticeboards and very quite place. The quietness even makes the fridge seem loud, as no traffic noise.

Absolutely disappointed in my stay here.
When first arrived host was lovely, which is always nice.
Unfortunately it went down hill fast upon entering room which is dated and old. Spiders and webs everywhere as well as ants! So many ants!
I slept in the lounge and the fridge was so loud it didn’t make for a very pleasant sleep. My sheets were dirty with what I’m hoping was chocolate! I discovered this in the morning to my horror!
Also the shower is so slippery that even though I was being very careful (There is a sign stating be careful) that I in fact did slip! I hit my ankle so severely it bruised and swelled straight away! Not very safe unfortunately.
Then my mother asked if we could have a late checkout of 11, the man said of course and said no late checkout fee! Luckily I did hear this conversation! But in fact when we had left they had charged my mother $30 to her credit card! On their website site it does not state that they charge for this or if it is in their policies! We would NOT have stayed the extra hour had we known we would be charged as let’s face it...... it definitely wasn’t worth the $30! I would highly recommend NEVER staying here!

Response from Sonja McClenaghan, Owner at Foxton Beach Motel

This review was left by the daughter of Mrs who has since removed her review. Here is a copy of the reponse we posted to the review that was posted: It is sad & disappointing that you have decided to follow through with your blackmail threat to 'bad mouth' our motel on social forums in order to get a refund for a service that you requested & received. We take pride in our recently refurbished motel & always endeavor to provide clean & comfortable facilities for all our guests which many of our other reviews can attest to.

A great Motel in a lovely quiet spot. We stayed here for 2 nights and slept like logs! The unit was lovely and clean and was a good size with a table and chairs, 2 seater couch, a very comfy bed and a good kitchen plus a bathroom. Right on the edge of the estuary there is also a lovely walkway for a stroll. The hosts were helpful and pleasant and we would stay again should we be in the area.

The Motel is situated at the end of a cul de sac next to the Bird Sanctuary viewing platform and a beautiful boardwalk aptly titled "Sunset Walk". It's a peaceful & quiet location which immediately put us in a holiday mood, no noise, just birds twittering about - lovely ! The Unit was well laid out with everything you would need, places to put things, nice comfortable bed, heater & electric blankets if you needed them. The hosts were very helpful, nothing was a problem or too much trouble. Down the other end of the street & straight across is the famous Mr Grumpy's Takeaways - they say you haven't 'tasted' Foxton Beach until you have ordered Fish n Chips (or similar) from Mr Grumpys : we did and certainly weren't disappointed. Foxton Beach Motel is the perfect place to stay to explore & enjoy this area - nature right outside your doorstep & a home away from home. We'll be back again.

As the title says, a clean and comfortable self-contained unit. Everything we needed was provided - including a very comfortable bed!
There was heaps of random information in the guest folder and a lot of laminated signs posted around the room which we found slightly amusing.
One minor complaint was that the television was fixed fast against the wall so a bit difficult to lie and watch in bed (not really that important to us but might be to others). Of more concern was the paper thin walls. Luckily for me I was really tired as any other night I may not have been able to sleep listening to the man in the room next door snoring! I also heard him coughing and farting the next morning which was equally as disturbing!
All in all though, there were definitely more positives than negatives.

This place was one of my favorites in NZ - it’s small, maybe six rooms, but the room was the perfect size, and it was well-appointed. If you self-cater, it has everything you need.

We did not, and Sonia gave us great restaurant recommendations! I highly recommend Mr. Grumpy’s - one of the top 10 chippies in NZ, and Sam’s Bakery (I’ll review them separately).

It’s a beautiful, quiet place, and two nights was too short!
