It was very windy and cold when I visited, so I really didn't enjoy it much. Besides that, it was still beautiful to look at.

I took a solo trip to Corolla, North Carolina to OBX - the Outer Banks of North Carolina. You MUST prepare for this trip! I wish I had known more and want to advise and inform travelers so they know what they're going to encounter on what was a "bucket list" trip for me. MUST know! Learn how to "air down" your tires to get onto the beach. REQUIRED. Learn how to navigate through deep sand, ruts, and over sand dunes. Understand there are NO street signs to get to your rental home. Your navigation system will be WRONG. Learn that you will find your rental home by mile markers ONLY. Study the tide charts of Corolla (Carova Beach) to KNOW when you can and cannot drive on the beach! Once you leave the paved road, you will have to drive beach ONLY to get to your location and only by knowing the tide level. BRING GROCERIES! All you have on the island are homes, sand, surf, more sand, wild Mustangs and more sand! FILL YOUR TANK WITH GAS!
You will learn how to navigate over the dunes. If you want food or groceries you will have to drive back down the beach on air-downed tires, then find the Public Park to "air up" to your normal PSI, then go grocery shopping or go to restaurants. FILL YOUR TANK WITH GAS. Now to get back to your rental property, CHECK tide levels. Your ability to get around the island (on or off) are governed by the tides.
To prepare? Gas tank FULL, air lowered to 15-18 PSI, shovel if you get stuck, AAA if you get stuck, cell phone charged, FOOD for your entire stay (and extra if you can't get off the island due to storm), an adventurous spirit!
You can take wild horse tours (they book out of Corolla so you will have to air up once you leave the beach to get to the tour company's main location. Then when your tour is over (if you're staying on the beach), you will have to air down again to go back on the island to get to your vacation rental.
Respect the horses, DO NOT approach them. If you stay for a week, you can just relax on the beach, fish, or just drive around to see if you can locate the wild horses either coming in from the preserve, or in people's yards, or on the beach front. I traveled SOLO with my two dogs. I have plenty of tips if you wish to ask me. It was all a learning curve for me and I met some amazing local people who gave me tips and advice. A MUST do trip.

Not sub par but high tide really squelches the beach area - giving the beach a crowded feel. PROs lifeguards and ability to rent umbrellas and chairs. CON - lots of business or lifeguard ATV use.

The beach area is such a joy to visit. Seeing those beautiful horses, and how they deal with the people that is on the beach. It is a must see & do while on OBX.

An experience worth some time, great views of the Atlantic. However, hordes of tourists driving around your house chasing Wild Horses is doubtfully embraced by most year round residents.
Large homes perched right on the beach simply awaiting their demise can't realistically be sustainable. It is unfortunate that the seashore continues to be developed. If you drive your own vehicle make sure to read all advisories and rules carefully!

But if you look West you see houses to close to the dunes. the beach access construction destroying the dunes with every wave that reaches them.
Private owners build those bridges/ crosswalks but do not help clean up the mess they cause
and if you sit on the beach and a car drive by that is not beach live for me.

Fun and unique experience driving on the beach! It was like a roller coaster ride in the car! Waves rolling in, sunshine, family time and laughs! Enjoyed every minute, although we didn't see any horses, we did see a jellyfish! We drove the 12 mile stretch to the border and then turned around to beat the sun going down. Took about an hour or so both ways, but it was enjoyable, peaceful, and relaxing!

We took a hummer ride on the beach for 2 hours. It was my favorite thing we did at Corolla. I would do it again. The sand is so beautiful and the hummer ride on the beach was fun. We loved seeing the wild horses.

Can you recommend a tour company to drive near the corolla horses
Verfasst am 1. März 2021
We rented a Jeep from a Jeep rental agency and we had 24 hours to enjoy not only the beach, but also the drive down to the Hatteras lighthouse! I would recommend paying the price of a 4x4 Jeep rental (then you’re definitely safe and distanced from others and you also can drive the beaches at your leisure in search of the gorgeous Mustangs!!!

Is there a way to see the horses without a tour? We are a family of 6 and this is cost prohibitive with their rates.
Verfasst am 22. Juli 2018
You‘ll need a 4WD. Walking with kids will be exhausting. There are no clear path and it might take hours until you see some horses.
Also along the beach, you‘ll have too much 4WD driving and sometimes driving a bit reckless.
Family of 6, if you‘re not coming with a 4x4 the cheapest is the tour with garanty of seing the horses. Have fun...

For driving only, there is no cost. If you park and fish, swim or whatever it requires a parking permit from the town. $50 for 10 days. Available at the visitors center. You will not get stuck with 4WD. I saw all sizes of cars, trucks and jeeps. They ALL had 4wd....a must or you WILL get stuck.

From my understanding, camping is forbidden on the Corova shoreline. However, campsites are in Currituck County on the sound side area. Some rent cottages, in Corolla, then drive over to Corova shores and back. I hope this helps.

We are staying at the lower part of Nags Head (near the bridge to Manteo) in late April. Can you give an idea of time/distance to get to the wild horse tours?
Verfasst am 30. März 2018
Not totally sure but I would guesstimate about 45 minutes to one hour tops because traffic shouldn't be that busy end of April. Don't forget to lower air out of your tires. Visitor Center in Corrola is very helpful

Hi,
we don't have an SUV -can you park your car and access it by foot? Are there horses both in Currituck beach and in Carova beach?
And last, how are both beaches? The waves?
Thanks!
Verfasst am 22. August 2017
I don't believe there is anywhere to park your car at the pavement's end, and it would be a very long walk to the horses if you could. It is difficult to respond about the horses' locations. They truly roam free, and as the guide on our tour said, there is no way of knowing how many they will be able to find on a given day. The tour vehicles literally drive up and down the beach and dunes in search of the mustangs.
I am not sure how to answer your question about the beaches. They are literally used as a road and you have vehicles driving in both directions. It made no sense to me, but we saw people park in the middle of the beach, pull out their umbrellas and
chairs, and then sit there while traffic passes in front and behind them. To get into the water, they literally had to cross "the street" to get to the ocean. It certainly wasn't peaceful!

There really is not good parking available close enough to the entrance to the 4-wheel drive area. I think that you definitely need a car with 4-wheel drive to access the beach. The horses roam where and hwen they want and Curruituck beacj and Carova beach are connected. Carova is just several miles further north after you enter the beach at the northern end of Corolla where the paved road ends.

We are renting a house 5 minutes away from this beach. Is there any other attractions nearby that are worth driving to (There's nothing except the beach as far as I have researched that is less than an hour away)?

Jockey's Ridge Park was beautiful. Also, The Wright Brothers Museum in Kitty Hawknow was pretty and interesting.if you wanted to Road trip down to Hatteras for a day the lighthouse there was cool. Tallest brick lighthouse in the US, very intetesting.

The best time to look is after a storm. We found...Scotch Bonnet, Helmet Conchs, Whelks, Olive Shells, Moon Snails, Coquina Clams, Sand Dollars.
