Clean but outdated rooms

Reviewed Apr 29, 2022
The Holiday Inn & Suites Durango Central is in a good location and has mostly clean rooms.

The bathrooms were spotless (important!) but the sitting chair had stains all over.

Setting aside cleanliness, the rooms were very tired despite the newish looking exterior and newish looking lobby. Everything in the room looked and felt 2006 or 2008.

No USB outlets anywhere. Usable electrical outlets for charging devices few and far between. Old TV from 2012 -- 10 years ago! Really bad lighting. Four or five lamps in my room, each with their own switches. Lights never got bright. Only nice thing about the rooms was the local art on the walls as opposed to the stock photos that every hotel uses.

Most of the staff were cordial and well-intended. Some were more hospitable than others. Supposedly, the burger-centric restaurant and bar is good but I never saw anyone eating at it. A meager 10% or 15% discount on drinks would go a long ways. Who really wants to eat at the Holiday Inn with so many good bars and restaurants a half mile away in downtown Durango?

Zero IHG Spire/Diamond elite status recognition. No suite upgrade, despite suites being available. No breakfast for elites, even though IHG is supposedly now offering this.

No newspaper. No laundry service/dry cleaning. You expect those things at a full-service hotel.

Supposedly, there was a shuttle to downtown and the airport, but this was never offered.

For under $125-$150, the Holiday Inn is fine even if the rooms look and feel old. At more than $150, I would recommend booking the brand new Holiday Inn Express. Not only is it brand new, but the location is better and breakfast is free.

Now I don’t like or expect a super soft bed while traveling or at home but these beds were ridiculous. They were hard like CONCRETE! My husband who likes a hard mattress said these beds were even too hard for him! It was so uncomfortable that I considered going out to the truck to sleep in the back seat! I started to cry at one point because I was so miserable. The next morning we were both walking like we were 85 years old! We hurt so badly from those mattresses! We will never stay there again and warn our friends and family against staying there.

I'm going to say that for everything this hotel had going against it I would absolutely stay here again next time I come through Durango. We were there for a week the last week in December and into New years. The weather was bad with a lot of snow but the staff made sure the sidewalks were clean an not slippery. The hotel is under construction and the hot tub was out of service but the room upgrade with a jacuzzi tub was a very nice touch and very appreciated! The rooms were clean and warm and the staff was always helpful and friendly. The restaurant was good but short staffed. They did an amazing job with our food orders and the timely service. Hazel from the front desk assisted as a waitress and made sure we had everything we needed. She gave us vouchers for the kids breakfast meals. Hazel was amazing! I don't think she even went home because of the weather and she never stopped smiling, she even gave us some print outs of things to do in the area with the kids. I seriously cried when we left, I wanted to get a job there and live hahahaha We will be back next year at our " home away from home" We look foreword to seeing you guys! Thanks Again!!!!

Room tip: Great service

The room was fine. Everything else was a hot mess.
The lobby is being renovated and is all torn up. We arrived hours after check-in time. The line was long because people were upset that their rooms still weren’t ready. There was only one person working the front desk and she had only been there a few weeks. She was doing a pretty good job of diffusing the fires all around her, but she was sending everyone to the restaurant to wait. So the restaurant was packed with unhappy people who again had to wait because one person was the hostess, waiter AND bartender. He had a great upbeat attitude, but obviously couldn’t keep up.
There were a few additional people who came in who we assume work at the hotel, one of which may have been the owner or manager. But, other than a smiling face, I didn’t notice them really helping out much.
We ordered drinks and spent over an hour waiting in the very loud restaurant before our room was ready. From what we understood, we were only able to get into our room “that quickly” because the people in front of us reserved 2 rooms but they weren’t next to one another so we got one of theirs.

Hi CathyBassett,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback about your stay at our hotel.

We're committed to providing an exceptional experience and it seems that it didn't happen this time. I'm sorry to hear about the condition of the lobby due to the ongoing renovation. We want to settle you the soonest as possible and we're saddened to know about the delay due to the lack of staff at the Front Desk. I shared this with our hotel management. I'm confident that the necessary actions will be taken, so situations as this will not happen again.

We're grateful to have you as one of our IHG Rewards members. I hope you'll consider us again in your future travel plans!

Safe travels,

This property is within a 15 minute easy walk to the downtown area where all of the restaurants and stores are. Great value for families and couples. There is a small pool and hot tub to soak in at the end of the day. The staff was very welcoming and helpful and the room was a generous size. We were a couple and adult son traveling together. There was a nice fireplace for chilly evenings. There is a bar and small restaurant on the ground floor. The restaurant was not serving food at the time because of the pandemic but the bar was open and had a great bartender to keep us entertained. Small bar snacks were available. It's a great value and you save a few dollars since you are not staying in the core of downtown,

The location of this hotel, within 50 feet of ongoing road improvement, was not good. Access to the hotel was difficult, and its proximity to the construction and continuing traffic on this main street, was not conducive. Then there was the front desk, at check in, who seemed indifferent to my arrival and stay. This was a free night stay, and I had the distinct impression that reward stays are a low priority, in terms of room location preferences, etc. If a Platinum level member is feeling irrelevant, what does that mean for the person(s) who are non IHC members? In addition to the location issues, the street noise, the front desks indifference to room preferences, and the billing errors, there was the breakfast, arguably the worst I've experienced at a Holiday Inn Express. The omelets were way overcooked and dry, and on a good day they aren't the tastiest item on the menu. Otherwise the menu was the usual HIE menu. I would not stay at this hotel again.

Room tip: Definitely request a room on a top floor away from the street construction, but good luck with that.
