This resort was a last minute addition to plans that were in the making for three years. I added a travel day in the beginning of the trip to avoid weather delays from Boston to Liberia - did not want to risk a snow delay. Not wanting to stay in Liberia where there is not much to do, I sought a resort within one hour of the airport. Hotel Borinquen had availability and is truly a hidden gem. Our room was a junior suite (503) and was beautiful - huge bathroom, jacuzzi and shower as well as a large bedroom, sitting area and outdoor patio. The views were gorgeous, the room was clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the food was delicious. We ordered room service the only night we were there - prices were extremely reasonable and selection excellent. The buffet breakfast the next morning with the omelette station was superb. The fruit was super fresh- my husband loved the fruity welcome drink (papaya, pineapple, mango, mint) we were given and ordered one with dinner.
We did one excursion the morning we were checking out - the horseback zipline. I am not a thrill seeker but my husband likes an adrenaline rush so off we went. A 45 minute horseback riding trip to the zipline was slightly more terrifying than the zipline itself as the horses were cresting ridges with sheer drops. Our guide Oscar was wonderful, taking photos and video. Our horses - Lucero and Luna - were well kept animals. Once we reached zipline platforms, Memo and his crew were our guides. They were super attentive and as we were the only guests on this excursion, we had the guides attention all to ourselves. The ziplines were scary too but we did it, with my husband doing the "superman" pose as well as upside down - twice! Amazing time!
The hot springs were wonderful and the mudbaths were awesome. My husband insists his skin felt great after the mudbaths. The pool is also beautful and I liked seeing the petroglyph. The howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys were quite a sire. Lots of wildlife and nature. Shout out to Sofia in reception and Emmanuel with the shuttle service.
There were a few factors for not giving this a 5 star review. First, the road to the hotel is not paved and the twisty turns and switchbacks on an unpaved road was unnerving and made me nauseous. This is the governments' decision, but it effects the hotel. I can see why prices are very reasonable, getting there is super uncomfortable. Second, our room was near the top of a steep hill and we did not want to get a shuttle every time we went up (you could, just not our style). We are in good shape, but it was literally a vertical climb, so uncomfortable. Third - the hotel is not near town, once you are there, thats it unless you have a car and don't mind that horrific road. Finally, the linens need to be replaced - low threadcount that has pilled up to the point I felt I was sleeping on flannel.
I would still recommend the hotel to travelers, but plan to stay a few days, rest up for the road back.
