Charming resort with amazing hospitality in a great locoation

Reviewed Nov 11, 2021
My husband and I were only here for one night in the King room with garden view and we wished we could have stayed longer. We met at the ferry terminal and were taken via the hotel transfer to our hotel. Right away when we entered the hotel we were greeted with beautiful flower necklaces and a refreshing welcome drink. We were shown our rooms that were very clean and decorated with Polynesian accents. The lush garden throughout the resort was beautiful to walk through. The hotel had its own private beach and complimentary use of snorkels that we used to see the many varieties of fish in their man-made coral reefs. It was really cool the process they used to make the coral reefs. We were also able to watch a traditional Polynesian dance that evening which was a very cool experience. This resort is very close walking distance to Maitira beach and to local shops. The friendly and attentive staff definitely made us wish we were able to stay longer and the little departure gift was well-appreciated. I think this is a perfect resort for those who are budget conscious but wants a charming well-maintained hotel that is close to many restaurants and local beaches.

The only issue is the walls were thin so we could hear our neighbours singing (good thing they weren't terrible singers).

We originally booked a beach bungalow here for a 3 night stop on our honeymoon. When we arrived, the front desk staff told us that we were upgraded to an overwater bungalow as a congratulations. In addition, we also received a pareo and tshirt, as well as a round of free drinks! The staff here was probably our favorite and least favorite part. They were the friendliest hotel staff we encountered overall and they remembered our name and room number everywhere we went. The main issue was that there was not enough of them. It took us almost two hours to get drinks at happy hour one night and there were several meals when the restaurant only had one server. The beach here was amazing and provided wonderful views as well as snorkeling. The hotel is close to a market where you can stock up on water and beer. The restaurant on the beach had amazing pizzas, salad, and seafood. We were less impressed with the restaurant next to the bar, but loved the Polynesian show they put on. Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay here.

Room tip: The beach and overwater bungalows have the best views and access to water

I walked into my lagoon view room and was gobsmacked. A million dollar view (see the photos attached) with a vivid palette of blues and greens was mine without the hefty price tag for which Bora Bora is infamous. My modern room with a balcony did not disappoint either. After many days staying in thatched roof Polynesian bungalows, this room - which I could hermetically seal from all the geckos, spiders, mosquitoes, mayflies, roaches and other creepy crawlies that adore this garden of eden - was exactly what the doctor ordered. I was as happy as a clam in my room. Housekeeping was extremely efficient and took good care to ensure that my bathroom was amply stocked with towels and toiletries. The hotel’s tiny beach was very peaceful and relaxing, as was the gorgeous lagoon.

Paradise is rarely perfect and sure enough, I have two big criticisms:

- Breakfast was by far the most unhygienic buffet I have ever seen, extremely surprising in these Covid-19 times. In its infinite wisdom, the hotel has eliminated all serving cutlery from dishes in the buffet. All this would be fine if guests were given single use tongs (as at the Intercontinental in Tahiti) to serve themselves and then leave in a tray for used serving tomgs. Instead, small quantities of cutlery, each set wrapped in a napkin, were laid out at the start of the buffet with not cutlery laid out at tables. Guess what? Nearly all the guests I observed went back to their tables with the cutlery they used to serve themselves, they then ate with the same cutlery and went back with their used cutlery to serve themselves again from the buffet!!! Few people thought of using another clean set of cutlery to serve themselves on return trips to the buffet. I mentioned this to the restaurant manager, Myreille, who just shrugged and blamed guests for not being responsible. I blame the hotel for having a dumb system that is not intuitive and that is far less hygienic than even a pre-Covid buffet. At least in the old days people didn’t wander back to buffets with spoons, forks and knives they had already used to eat with and plunge them into dishes meant to be shared with others! One day this buffet will be a super spreader of Covid-19 if this system is not changed.

- WiFi was very poor as several other guests have noted. It worked rarely and for only very short intervals in the room. It worked much better near the reception, but anything that went beyond the basics was often impossible even there.

All said and done, I enjoyed my stay, but I was very uneasy about the breakfast buffet and the lack of action on the hotel’s part even after I pointed out how dreadfully unhygienic it was to Myreille, the manager.

I spent two days at the Maitai over New Years. Very reasonably priced for Bora Bora with a wonderfully friendly staff. They really go above and beyond. Just as friendly and responsive as the staff at the 5* motu resorts in which I have stayed. Only a short walk to Matira Beach, shops, and restaurants. Great option for those who are on a budget or want to stay on the mainland for a night or two to stock up on alcohol, snacks, and other supplies rather than paying the huge mark ups charged by the motu resorts. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room tip: Overwater was great, hotel is so close to Matira Beach though it may be worth springing for a cheaper room.

I took my daughter on a 3 island trip and Bora Bora was our last island for 4 nights in an overwater bungalow. We had Bungalow #3. WOW-the views, the gorgeous clear water, the sea life, the whole experience was one of the best I've ever had. To think I can just jump into the water from my deck and spend hours exploring the underwater world. We were in heaven. Our bungalow was well appointed. We had brought extra adapters and did not have a problem charging the many electronic devices we had. The wi-fi is sketchy. One had to log-on a lot of times daily. It goes out and you don't realize it and texts were waiting. Fortunately with t-mobile I had free 3G service, slow, but better than nothing. We were using Messenger to communicate with family back home. TV only had CNN. Since we were here during the election situation, it was good we at least had one source of news. We read, we napped, we snorkeled. Did I say Paradise was found. As far as the buffet breakfast, it was just ok. Since this was COVID time we were only allowed to use our own fork & large spoon to take items. This was good. The food, not so much. Eggs were scrambled and very watery. Potato wedges were overcooked. Fruit had lots of tiny bugs on it. Bacon was good. Breads were excellent. We found two markets to walk to. To the left from the beach was a little longer and not as nice as the market to the right, a 3 minute walk. We picked up sandwiches, bottled water & snacks. We were supposed to have two twins, but there was only a king and a sofa bed. The beds were hard as rocks. No way could I sleep on it. Fortunately, they had big, thick toppers brought for both beds. This worked. Yay for my back. Other than that, all was wonderful. As an extra, there is a little square table that is see-through to the water below us. Fabulous. We loved just watching the fish below.

Room tip: We had bungalow 3-it was amazing.

I did not really enjoy my stay at this hotel. It is very standard looking, there is nothing fancy about it. Luckily I stayed there only for 3 nights and after moved to the InterContinental. The hotel property is pretty big. The hotel is divided into 2 parts by a main road. There is the “hill part” with the lobby and blocks of rooms, and a “beach part” with the bungalows on the beach and on the water. The lobby looks nice, it definitely gives off a Polynesian vibe. The restaurant on the beach is pretty. Food there was good and tasty, but the menu was pretty small. Checking-in, I upgraded myself from a regular King-Bed room with an ocean view to a bungalow on the water for an additional $60 per night. I got a bungalow #18. There was a lot of space inside of the bungalow, but it looked very basic, they did not really try to decorate it nicely inside. The only one thing I really liked was a completely glass table with a glass bottom, I could see the ocean water through it. My bungalow had a little balcony, but I did not really feel privacy there because people could clearly see me from the beach (my bungalow was the first on the water from the beach), and also I had a feeling that it was super easy to swim and get inside of my bungalow, so every single time I left I checked if I locked the balcony door. The King-Size bed in the room was comfortable. The big problem for me was no electric plugs around the bed, and not many plugs in the room in general. The bathroom was big enough. I liked that the toilet was separated from it. Bathroom amenities were cheap and smelled badly. Another big issue for me was the super slow Wi-Fi. I could not open some apps and it was impossible to upload videos to my social media. And the last problem for me was a super small beach. I did not like the beach at all. Also every single day of my stay it was windy and wavy, so it was hard to get to the water and swim. The bottom of the ocean is also pretty rocky, so you should wear shoes and be careful. The hotel’s location is good. There are many restaurants and little shops around, the distance is totally walkable. All the hotel staff was super sweet and friendly. The hotel suggests some activities around the island. If you want to see Bora Bora and save money, then this hotel is a good option for you. But if you want to have fancy and a unique vacation then do not stay at this hotel, because it is very basic.
