Excellent family vibes here

Reviewed Nov 18, 2023
Excellent family stay at El Reinas with life long happy memories made. This hotel/hostel is top-notch. The owners are a beyond loving, accommodating family with a keen eye to making sure your stay is comfortable and lovely along with their fabulous staff. Our 4 yr old son played with their son and all his toys which was thrilling to watch. The food was delicious and was always freshly prepared. We chose the meal plan which was quite affordable which includes breakfast , lunch and dinner. Yummy Costa Rican fare. Their Ceviche is incredible. The Casados are delicious. If you are a lucky, Enrico will make the best true Italian thin crust Pizza you’ve ever tasted. Cold beer, good wine and fruit juice are all available as well. Pool and common areas are chill surround by well maintained beautiful plants and trees, all with good internet. Gym workout area is a bonus. Super clean room was cozy and comfortable. The family vibe at El Reinas is the best in Playa Grande. If you have little kids, stay here! 5 minute walk on well maintained jungle trail to beach which is an added bonus for surfers and beach goers. We will definitely be back for another stay soon.

I really loved my stay here from start to finish. Check-in and Check-out was a breeze. Everyone is so friendly and says "Hola" any time you pass. I wanted east beach access to Playa Grande surfing and they are, literally, in front of the 3 minute path directly to the beach. You can rent boards from their quiver, if needed. There are outdoor showers to rinse and board racks conveniently located. They are knowledgeable about the area and either offer or refer you out to surf classes, canoe trips, at tours, etc. The town is pretty remote but within a 2-5 minute walk you can get to the local restaurants, a few little markets, and some surf shops. This is NOT Tamarindo. This is a quiet beach community...the hotel is cozy and clean. The cleaning woman is amazing - especially considering the sand and stuff you bring in from the beach (despite best efforts!). They have a lovely little pool, as well. I found the room to be large and there are a ton of outlets for your things. The atmosphere is beachy chill, it's quiet (there seems to be quiet hours, actually -- where if folks are around and chatting or hanging in the open spaces, they stop entirely by 9-10 PM). I believe the owner lives there with his family! I'm a single woman and felt completely safe, here. People looked out for me, too, as I got sick and needed to go to the emergency clinic one day. I had a ride there immediately and he (Jonathan -- whom I would recommend for a Canoe tour!), even gave the clinic his number so he was there to pick me up when I was done! When I returned, everyone asked if I was OK and if I needed anything! They even made me coffee in the morning (with ice cream!)...and really, just went above and beyond anything I ever expected. The price is amazingly fair for such great beach access and the type of room -- and the service and attention to my comfort and stay were better than any 5-star hotel I've ever stayed at. I would recommend this hotel to anything traveling to the area in a heart-beat. If I'm ever in the area again, I would stay here again, hands down. Seriously, if you're looking for a place in Playa Grande, this is it. Thanks for a great stay! ^_^

5/5…Enrico, his family, and staff are awesome. Made us VERY welcome. Top notch food and smoothies, and the prices are extremely reasonable. Excellent service and clean rooms. Anyone giving this place a bad review needs to get over there self. Best place in playa grande! See you in August, Angelo!

I am returning to Playa Grande since 2018 and El Reinas (previously Sugar's Monkey) is my go-to hotel. I simply love it and feel at home here

The small hotel offers you everything you need plus it has some great advantages:

- It's as close as it gets to the beach. If you're a surfer that's a major bonus
- There's a path leading to the beach right in front of it
- Well-maintained (over the past 5 years it went through the artistic change) and it looks fabulous
- Full of flowers and various chill areas to rest in the biggest heat of the day
- Walking distance to the restaurants/bars & a small grocery shop but far away from the noise from the nearby club which throws parties in the evenings
- Family-owned, the owners are super nice. Enrico is very laid back and Pame is a great source of information on just about anything & she's also very good with flowers and handcrafts
- Extremely friendly staff

Hope to be back soon <3

Room tip: I recommend taking a room with a kitchenette

Was there on my first solo trip. I was very friendly welcomed from the whole staff and met fast new people. Everyone was gently always asking if I‘m fine or if I need something. The food and especially the smoothies were delicious! Can highly recommend the „Coco Loco“. The area was cleaned every day. It‘s a simple but very cute place to stay.
It‘s just a short walk to the beach to surf or watch incredible sunsets. By night you can hear sounds of wild animals - you feel like beeing in the jungle.
The hostel also offers bike rentals and surf lessions.

My wife and I spent 6 days at SM to celebrate 40 years together and loved it. We have stayed at other places in Playa Grande, and we have stayed at a whole range of hotels around the world. We loved SM's laid back vibe, proximity to the beach, and the chill pool right in the middle of the property. Good WiFi, good music, good wine, and good AC in the room. Enrico stocks a nice variety of Italian reds and white wines. The kitchen cranks out an amazing selection given its small size, and there are other food options close by, but coffee by the pool in the morning was grand and small pizzas at night hit the spot. Live music on Fridays. A constant parade of international and Tico guests filters through, with a mix of oldsters and youngsters, and Enrico is always willing to engage in a philosophical discussion! We hope to go back soon.
