I'd had a tiring journey with Cancer and dealing with a personal loss. My job as a counselling Psychologist meant that I needed to get away from the bad memories of the cancer treatment and to recuperate. My body and mind had taken a beating, and I desperately needed some TLC. Athreya was a place i found on the internet, as i wanted to give Ayurveda a try. This was not as a treatment, but as a recovery and detoxify from allopathic treatment which was necessary in my case,.
Athreya was a little secret i discovered in the busy town of Kottayam. I call it a secret because I visit Kottayam multiple times a year, for the last 30 years to visit family but i never knew about Athreya. It was with a little trepidation that i made the booking, not knowing what to expect. But what can i say, it was a lovely surprise!
Right from when we got picked up from the airport by Sudeesh and the drive to Athreya where we were met by the ever smiling, ever obliging Rahul, who looks after whatever you may require there. The staff are welcoming, polite and ready to help with whatever you may require.
The rooms are simple, a decent size. The view from our room was tranquil and beautiful, overlooking paddy fields and watching the water lillies bloom was a delight every morning. The food was delicious, very comforting vegetarian food. Typical Kerala cuisine, it was food for the soul.
Dr Sreejit is a very competent, considerate and attentive doctor. He will tell you clearly, what to expect, and not to expect from the treatment, and his frankness is much appreciated. Dr Sreejit met us on the very first day, and treatment began. It was personalised for both of us, my husband also accompanied me for treatment of his own. Every little detail is attended to, and Doctor follows up every single day, to know how the treatment is working for you. This was the first time i was doing Ayurvedic treatment for an extended period, 21 days in my case, 14 days for my husband. The therapists Anju and Anusha are good at their work, cheerful and friendly.
For me this break was better than any vacation i have ever been to, because I was in the lap of nature, amidst such beautiful greenery and well maintained surroundings. It was exactly what i needed. Serene, quiet, fresh air, there were a few days when i was the only person at the resort, as it was in Covid times, and my husband had returned home. It was a total rejuvenation for me, and i look back on those days with nostalgia. I will be back, to detoxify, to rejuvenate, and intend to make this a yearly routine.

A bit of background first.
My dad had been struggling with severe backache since 2015 or so & went to allopathic doctors initially - who ruled out the more sinister options like tumour, cancer etc. After a series of tests incl. MRI said the thinning of spinal bones at the lower half of the spine was likely the cause for the ache. Said this is to be expected for a man nearing 70 (a degenerative spine). Prescribed high-grade pain killers. My dad could only function after taking a tablet, the effect of which would last anywhere between 3 to 10 days. Without the tablet, a bed or a chair was his best friend outside of eating hours. Changed 3-4 allopathic doctors too specialising in back pain thinking a different treatment might do the trick. Nothing worked & worse was giving off other side effects like constipation etc from consuming too many medicines. Pain killers that helped too were bad in the longer run, the warnings said.
Ayurvedic Treatment at Athreya
Through indirect references and some googling based on that found Athreya & Dr. Sreejit. Using the number given in the website arranged for an Online Consultation. My dad was asked to fill in a detailed questionnaire and scan through all the reports from allopathic doctors prior to the Consultation. Dr. Sreejit held a clear consultation & thankfully after reviewing my dads case said he / Ayurveda can help with his pain. He has his own yardstick for admitting patients and attributed my dad’s issue more to chronic inflammation, lifestyle choices than a true degenerative spine. We travelled from Chennai to Kerala and checked ourselves in for a 3 week Panchakarma treatment focussing on his back (starting June 3rd week 2021). During the first 2 weeks there was negligible improvement to his ache to be honest but he was able to cope with 4 different treatments a day, no issues. Then all of a sudden, beginning of week 3, the muscle lumps that my dad could always feel on his lower back could no longer be felt. He was no longer wincing in pain during a back massage too. In short, he checked in with a pain score of 7/10 (especially when getting up from bed or a chair) which by week 3 was reduced to 1.5/10. After treatment for the day or breakfast even that disappeared from week 3.
Conclusion & aftermath
Dr. Sreejit didn’t have us for long. A week after my dad felt better he was happy to discharge us with just 2 x medicines plus an oil for takeaway to continue for a few months. During the stay he gave a lot of advice on the root causes of inflammation and other things to do / avoid. Every day he was available to hear us out if we wanted to talk to him. Even otherwise he would seek us out for daily health updates which he meticulously jots down in his file. A very hands-on doctor.
Absolutely no complaints about the quality of the rooms or the premises. Very green and clean. The treatment therapists, Ajith & Nubin were absolute gems. Rahul from facilities & Ashish from front-desk were super helpful & polite at all times.
Its nearly been 2 weeks since we returned from Athreya. The situation is still stable and he enjoys his walk to the store & has even started mild exercise on his own. He still has his odd bad days (which Dr. Sreejit said would happen) when he gets up with a pain score of 4 or 5 out of 10 in the morning but once he gets the special oil on his back followed by a hot water bath, he is ready to tackle the day. Most importantly, its been 2 months since he has taken the strong allopathic pain killer & I am now convinced Ayurveda is the way forward for lifestyle based illnesses and other chronic conditions (Any emergency or surgery still allopathy of course)
And finally we promised ourselves we will indulge in this cleansing treatment once every year to rejuvenate our ever battered body & mind – especially living in the city!
