Remote tropical beauty, great food and drink, excellent accommodations

Reviewed 2 weeks ago
A beautiful somewhat remote resort poised on the rocky shoreline of south Taveuni Island, Fiji, an hour and a half flight from Nadi, Fiji. Taveuni is the "Garden Island" of Fiji, and is green and covered in tropical jungle. This resort is extremely well kept, green lawns stretching to the low rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean. Palm trees, flowering plants, carefully kept gardens, an infinity pool and lounges and cabanas along the oceanfront. The Bures, or "cabins" are large, many feature private outdoor showers and baths, air conditioning, large living spaces and large outdoor private patios. The food is very good and the bar is well stocked. Snorkeling and diving tours to the famous "White Wall" are available every day directly from the resort. The staff are all Fijian and very friendly and helpful and often entertain guests. Special dinners are served some nights including a Fijian night with food singing and dancing and the Kava ceremony. We highly recommend it as a unique and beautiful place.

I often find that when going back to places after a great experience, second time around is not as good. That was not the case here and with 7 years between visits, my second visit was just as good as the first. This is a resort for divers, in fact all of Taveuni probably is as there is not a lot to do on land. If you are not a diver, stick to the bigger Fiji islands.
Diving was mainly on the spectacular Rainbow Reef, each day the dive guides choose the site based on the weather, sea conditions and the tide. Over 5 days of diving, most had an element of gentle drift diving, with no fierce currents to worry about. 18-20 metre visibility on every dive. We only dived one site twice, sand that was the world famous white wall, so all divers were happy with that.
On land, the food and service is excellent, rooms of a high standard, and the staff are great. From your arrival to departure, all the staff you interact with know your name without fail. A highlight was Fiji night, which involved meats cooked in the traditional way in an earth oven, kava ceremony, singing and dancing with the staff. It felt like a group of friends having a party and we had been invited along.
I will go back again, hopefully not another 7 years before my next visit.

Room tip: Nitrox is available but at an extra FJD20 per tank on top of your dive package costs.

What a wonderful holiday my wife and I had! The resort was brilliantl!Friendly staff, beautifully appointed rooms, great food and fantastic location. The diving was superb (Rainbow reef)with some of the healthiest coral I have seen in my 30 years + diving and prolific fish life. Many thanks to Manasa and the dive team for all those great dives.Well done Terri and Alan- we will be back.

Room tip: You must dive to enjoy this resort! The dives are both in the morning so you have the afternoon free to sightsee and do other things .

The Upside: The grounds here were beautiful and everything you could imagine about a Fijian resort. Lush greens, grass, tropical plants, and stunning views. The staff was welcoming and friendly. The Fijian hospitality is awesome.

You get 15 minutes of free wifi each day at 1 mbps only available in the restaurant. If you want more data, the “premium” wifi for a fee is still at 1 mbps, but it’s unlimited. This is a remote island, so poor connection is expected.

French-pressed coffee, hot tea (not iced), and water are free all day long. Sodas and alcohol are quite expensive, $4 for a can of Coke and $12-$15 for cocktails. It's best if you stop at a local market before arrival to stock up on your favorite snacks and drinks. Some of the food was very good and some not so good. The portions were a nice size. The service was a bit slow at breakfast when all the divers are eating at once. It's best to get breakfast between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m.

The Downsides: They fouled up my reservation and put me in a different room on arrival than what I booked because they oversold my room category. After three days in the substitute room, I had to then move to the other room, which meant I couldn’t really unpack everything. I made this booking one year in advance and it was poor planning on their part. The accommodation has a lack of plugs. You’ll need Australian adapters. The A/C was barely able to keep up with the heat and I had to keep the bathroom door shut just to get the room cool enough to sleep at night. There are no glass windows, just screens with wooden shutters, which is not very energy efficient and explains why the room never completely cooled off. They run off a generator and 24-hour power is provided. There was plenty of hot water for a shower with good water pressure. The power was lost multiple times during my stay.

The room was clean and well supplied, except the mattress was very old and uncomfortable, soft and soggy in the middle. Cyclone Winston hit the island in 2016 and wiped out the resort and the reef. They rebuilt the resort, so the mattresses have not been replaced since then. My back was sore every morning. When I pulled the sheets back, what I saw was a mattress that was filthy and falling apart.
Thankfully, I did not get any bed bug bites. See the attached photos.

I came here to dive, and the dive guides were masters at finding the small stuff. They were great! I confirmed with the owner before my arrival that the dive groups were no bigger than 6 divers per guide, but sometimes there were 7-8 divers per guide. I'm a very experienced diver and don't book anywhere where there are large dive groups. They only have two boats, a smaller dive boat and a bigger boat that has a rack of chairs in several rows on the top deck for the non-diving excursions but also used as a dive boat. The bigger boat was chartered for a group, so everyone else was on the smaller boat. That was 13-15 divers, plus 5-6 staff. To say it was overcrowded is an understatement. Divers had no room to move around or get ready. Because of the design of this boat, it was shoulder to shoulder, knees to knees with fins overlapping. The groups were poorly organized such that the divers were scattered all over the boat instead of putting group one in the front, group two behind them, etc.

After the charter group left, the big boat disappeared. They said it was scheduled for maintenance. A resort full of divers and you send the boat out for maintenance? Now there were so many divers for one boat that they had to split the groups into a.m. and p.m. dives when normally all diving is done in the morning only. This went on for a few days. Then when that boat came back, they sent the smaller boat away for maintenance. Having this disrupted dive schedule also impacted the pre-scheduled afternoon non-diving activities, like the village visit or the hiking or visiting the waterfalls.

This was a real negative experience and I won't be back.

Bula from Paradise and thanks for staying with us recently. I am sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with your stay but appreciate your comments, which will assist us in training and looking closely at the areas you mentioned to improve them.
WI can ensure you that we change our mattresses and pillows annually, however as we do a lot of moving around of bedding etc they can get scuffed and dirty. We are getting our new shipment shortly in July.
It was indeed bad timing for our large Dive boat to need servicing during our busy time (this was not planned), however we do adhere to safety standards and that is why we split the Dives into AM / PM times according to PADI safety standards so that our divers could dive in smaller groups. All divers got to dive safely, though a little cramped for space too and from the sites. I apologise for the close contact but understand that all divers did enjoy their underwater experience.
We thank for taking the time to advise us of the issues you encountered and will do our best to improve our piece of Paradise.

Ten of us just returned from a 10-day visit to Paradise Taveuni. We are scuba divers who normally dive the Caribbean. Fiji was definitely a big step up as the reefs were pristine and vibrant with massive amounts of healthy coral. I own a scuba business and was impressed with the organization, safety, briefings, and overall operation of the dive side of the business run by co-owner Allan, dive shop manager and dive leader Manasa, boat captain Mike, Uli, and the rest of the dive staff. En route to the dive sites we were fortunate to see manta rays, pilot whales and dolphins. Dive leader Uli even dove in and using one of our cameras, took up close video of manta rays feeding on the surface.

Now let me comment on the resort side of the business run by co-owner Terri and her wonderful staff. The resort is a true tropical paradise and one is warmly welcomed upon arrival and throughout your stay. The management team is led by co-managers Flo and Kim and although I can't name all the wonderful staff, including those working in the background, Eta, MeiMei (spelling?), Soni, and Naomi took great care of us. Fijians are truly the warmest and friendliest people I have ever met. They sang and danced for us and shared their unique culture with us on multiple occasions including Fiji night dinner and Kava celebration.

The food was excellent and included local, Indian, and American cuisine with local produce from their onsite farm served at every meal. Farm fresh eggs from their hardworking hens were served at breakfast and the onsite bakery produced delicious bread, sweet rolls, and other baked goods. I'm not a big fish eater but I enjoyed the locally caught tuna. At breakfast we were presented with lunch and dinner menus to pre-order our meals and selection was varied, and I truly enjoyed every meal.

The cottages (bures) were clean and well appointed. We enjoyed the private outdoor shower and we never saw our housekeeper who did a great job in refreshing our bure each day. Internet service was spotty and somewhat frustrating but remember this is a remote island. Don't let this spoil an otherwise unforgettable trip. I understand that improvements are in the works, possibly with StarLink satellite service.

Our group did the waterfall and village excursions, and these gave us insight into both local culture and the natural beauty of Taveuni island. We also stopped at a local market and visited the international dateline.

In summary, Paradise Taveuni was a fantastic experience and we are thinking about returning in 2025.

Looking to relax?
Looking for rich gorgeous coral reefs?
Looking for warm friendly people?
Do you love singing?
Looking for a resort with onsite management?
In December, I spent 3 weeks at Paradise Taveuni and I’d return there again and again. Why?

“Flo Knows” and “Go with the Flo”:
All islands tend to be on island time where 11:30 is noon. Let’s lead with meeting Paradise’s local leader Flo. With her natural heartfelt smile, Flo will keep you on track for all your spa appointments, dives, meals and excursions without missing a beat. You can simply relax and, “Go with the Flo.” The Paradise team includes several delightful personalities: Eta, Illi, Selia, Nani, Eleanoa, Kimali, Wai Niu, Rosa, Rina, TeFoto/Ashley, Dory, Isiteri & Sefo, Gina and Lawa (my apologies for all of the names I cannot remember).

I had the bonus opportunity to hang out with visiting Marine Science coral expert Noah and intern Collin, who were SO FUN to dive and talk with! This team has embossed their love and care onto my soul and I miss them all very much!
Paradise Taveuni Resort has expert reef & geography knowing divemasters. The shop is managed by a gem, (King) Solomon who is a joy to work with every time. The professional dive leadership is led by Manasa, who is both extremely experienced with the local Fiji reefs and heavenly to dive with.

I had a fantastic bang-up time diving with Uli, Sio and AP, both day and night. They absolutely know where they are and where you are. They know how to find and show you the coolest critters, from large to tiny macro life while still protecting the coral.
When Scuba diving, a good captain is critical. Captains Apex and Michael were both very knowledgeable. They really know the reefs and can drop you in exactly where you’re supposed to be. The resort has 3 boats (2 larger aluminum catamarans and a skiff). Paradise might be the only Taveuni operator to dive Vuna reef.
The diving was remarkable, and every dive name was LITERALLY as specific and awesome as their namesakes.

Vuna Reef and Rainbow Reef (Paradise is approximately a 30-40 minute boat ride to Rainbow Reef):

Pilot Whales—Though I read about Pilot Whales in the island description, I was not expecting to come across a large pod of pilot whales with babies on the way to Rainbow Reef. For safety, the captain did not want any divers to jump in. However, I later found out that another diver who chartered the resort skiff privately, that guy DID jump in and he captured an amateur Go-Pro video of a TIGER SHARK watching the pilot whale pod for stray babies! Now we know why the captain didn’t want us to jump!

Manta Rays—I thought I hadn’t seen anything big in the water until I did! On the way to dive Rainbow reef we came across surface-visible groups of manta rays feeding. We jumped in and snorkeled with them for 5-10 minutes, then we did our dive there where we could see them from below as well—it was a beautiful dive. It got better during our surface interval, like the famous Hawaiian manta dive, when we were snorkeling our interval, and we were surrounded by them (I counted 9 of them). Divemaster Uli and I swam very far from the boat to greet them, and it was memorable to see him just being still and surrounded by the mantas. Divemaster Uli said he had only seen that once on the surface before!

Rainbow Reef-The Great White Wall: I got in THREE perfect dives at the White Wall, which were FANTASTIC!

Rainbow Reef-Cabbage Patch: (Uli can find the hairy ghost pipefish at that site!)
Rainbow Reef-the Zoo: this site had dazzling fishy pelagic views and literally a zoo of all sizes of fish in the water column, including a few white tip sharks.

Rainbow Reef-Purple Wall: delivered lots of purple soft corals, just like the name.

Rainbow Reef-Fish Factory: a favorite that you must see—so fishy!

Vuna Reef-Coral Gardens: my dives at Vuna Coral Gardens were just as described. The hard coral at Coral Gardens is in excellent shape.

I LOVED the resort’s house reef. It is a deep-water entry species-rich reef that hosts a few blue-ribbon eels, a banded sea krait, frog fish and a LOT more. The entry is a ladder from the dock so you can dive it anytime their dive shop is open. The entry can be accessed during both high and low tide, so if the shop is open, the ocean is open. The requirement to dive the house reef is to dive it guided first and divemaster Alosio was able to show me my first blue ribbon eel straight away!

Paradise boasts a perfect ocean view spa with exceptional deep massage practitioners, Katarina, Rusilla and Selia. They are caring, intuitive and healing. They have several other offerings that you can see on their spa menu.
Paradise is a relaxing environment, super clean, lovely landscaping, and such an easy place to be. You walk a few steps to meals, a few steps to dive (or to the boat), or a few steps to the spa. As an “aquaholic” (thanks Eta), I appreciated the abundant fresh drinking water.
The bures have both good air flow and screened windows. There was always hot water in the indoor and outdoor bure showers. YES you get that iconic outdoor Fiji shower that is both outdoors and with full privacy.

FIJI NIGHT! Do not miss the fun spirited song and dance Fiji night. Fiji night is both educational and fun fun fun. You can sing along or dance if you want to, or just chill and observe. I miss Fiji night!

Sefo serenaded many meals and special events with his lovely soothing voice. Sefo also plays both guitar and ukulele. He knows a variety of different Fijian songs; quite the set list!

Note that I require a special vegan diet of green plants and no-oil. I was delighted with the varied and interesting meals that met my requirements. I send so much gratitude to the kitchen staff. It was wonderful to be able to communicate with Chef Allan Gortan directly. They came up with some very cool delicious favorites such as Curry and Dahl, Mixed Vegetables with Potatoes or Roti, Vegan Shepherd’s Pie, Potato Vegetable Cakes, Papaya Cakes with Jeera and Lemongrass Vegetable Soup with Rice Noodles. I loved the giant soups with greens they made for me because when SCUBA diving, hydration is best practice!

The outstanding, friendly, Fiji-passionate, kind staff has been nurtured by the Paradise owners Terri and Allan Gortan. The Gortan’s are present, visible, and easy to communicate with. Terri is a resort superwoman and Allan is both the resort Chef and an avid SCUBA diver. A tour of the marvelous resort garden showcases their self-sufficiency!

On dive days and excursions, Flo and the team made sure that I had all my vegan snacks and vegan lunch.

I embarked on 4 excursions during my stay. My first excursion was a visit after diving (by boat) to Kioa Island. This encounter was beautiful, educational, powerful and I would love to visit them again. A special highlight of my trip, Kioa Island was filled with dancing, singing, and more wonderful warm people.
I doubled up the waterfall tours, visited the Lavena Coastline, the international date line, swam in a waterfall, visited Bouma waterfall and the natural waterslide. This tour was led by fun, informed and efficient tour guides Dan and Nani in an air-conditioned van. We drove around almost the entire island! The resort sent lunch and we were back in time for dinner.

On Christmas, per my request, I was blessed to visit Vuna Village’s Catholic Christmas mass accompanied by Flo. This was memorable with more lovely people and more singing. It was also very cool to see the Vuna reef that I already dove from the village. Do not miss a visit to Vuna Village! I have wholehearted gratitude for this special holiday visit.
The resort decorated and provided a special Christmas dinner with visiting carolers from another Vuna church. More singing!

Bobby’s Farm, Nabogiono Farm, was my final excursion and what an important visit. Bobby is a true steward caring for his 100-acre agroforestry botanic garden of endemic Fijian fruit and spice trees. He has mature trees that you are familiar with and many you’ve never heard of. His food forest farm also grows vegetables such as Taro and Cassava. The Fijian birds know that Bobby loves trees, and his agroforest is the place to be. Bring your binoculars and don’t miss early morning or evening sightings of some very colorful birds at Bobby’s Farm!

Beyond the exceptional diving with Uli, Sio and Manasa, and food, I will fly all the way back to Fiji to hear Sio & Eta’s announcements accompanied by the Fijian lali drum, to hear Eta’s laugh, see Illi’s smile, adventure with Flo, sing with Sefo, chat more with Wai and Rosa, and to dance dance dance as the sun sets with Isiteri, Selia, Nani, Eleanoa, Kata, Kimali, King Solomon, Gina, Lawa, Rusilla and TeFoto/Ashley.

Isa lei, na noqu rarawa,
Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka
Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa,
Mai Paratisi nanuma tiko ga.

Room tip: If you dive nitrox, bring your own nitrox analyzer.
