A disgrace to the Ramada and Windham names!

Reviewed Mar 29, 2024
The hotel needs a complete overhaul, new paint everywhere, repairs, updating, deep cleaning and scrubbing, staff that smile instead of looking bored with their job! We’re back to last century, noisy A/C with the only positives being good WIFI, ocean view through not very clean windows, and a good choice of TV channels, the yard is a disaster, ditto around the pool, they claim to have an Olympic pool when the depth is less than 3 feet except for a very small area at 4 ft. .. and watch where you walk barefoot around the pool, you can hurt your feet on broken tiles or gravel. If you stay the week-end, don’t count on sleeping much with the open-air disco across the street blasting music over 4 or 5 blocks and the bass resonating inside your bedroom. Any complaint is ignored by the staff. Room service is unreliable. The Casino is guarded by too many unpleasant goons to count, casino staff mostly unfriendly. No wonder there are no European tourists in the hotel, and very few Canadians and Americans! The restaurants with its indifferent staff is overly priced and the quality mediocre. No wonder it is empty most of the time. One pleasant supervisor I talked to in the Casino explained that the staff is underpaid and therefore not happy at work, I pointed out that they could cut the number of staff in half and pay them more to improve service and he agreed. Not a very pleasant experience, even the lit-up RAMADA sign outside is burnt out. We stayed as it was prepaid, and I should have read the reviews on this hotel before booking it.

I really loved our stay.. I had never been there before and I’ve been in Belize over a year now! But I loved the look inside, that there’s lots to do (movie theatre, gym, pool, and a big casino also!)

I honestly thought the breakfast was good, nothing great but great layout and also I LOVED the coffee! Beautiful views for breakfast and everyone who worked there was super nice!

One little thing.. is we had to wait in the lobby for them to check our room (after waiting 20 minutes for everyone in front of us) when we were checking in (at 7pm) and then we had to wait again when they realized we didn’t have any towels.. It didn’t really bother me, butttt my man was so tired and just wanted to wait in the room rather than the busy lobby, so that wasn’t the best start.. BUT then we saw the room and were super pleasantly surprised! And then the view in the morning was SO PRETTY! (we had an ocean view on the 3rd floor)

But would definitely stay here again! :)

We booked our stay through Booking.com and secured a huge discount on the normal price, making our stay good value for money.
Reading other reviews, we were a little concerned that the hotel was going to be a bit run down, and a lower standard than the website would have us believe, but we were pleasantly surprised.

Our Room.

Although the furniture is a bit dated, it is all functional, the bed was large and very comfortable, there were plenty of seating, a sofa, an armchair, as well as an office desk and chair.
There were tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge and microwave.
Cable TV was provided with far too many channels in both English and Spanish.
The air conditioning did a great job, and the bathroom was clean and had good water pressure, as well as constant hot water throughout our 10 night stay.

All rooms have a sea view, and if you are an early riser, you can catch some beautiful sunrises.
The hotel has a large swimming pool which was open all the time while we were staying there, but doesn't have any staff or lifeguards. I didn't use it, but it did look inviting.
Just a short walk away were a number of places to eat and drink, it seemed to be close to where most of the nightlife was happening in Belize City.
There is a nice open area by the sea front with food huts and places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.

The Restaurant.
The hotel has a reasonably large restaurant that provides a free breakfast buffet which served a selection of Belizean breakfast foods, you can also order omelette made with a choice of fillings. There was a cold selection and cereals.
Also hot and cold drinks.
I did find most of the pre-prepared food was too salty for my tastes.
We never used the restaurant for any other meals as we spent the days away from the hotel, and went to local restaurants for evening meals.

The staff we both friendly and helpful throughout our visit, and there were always Taxi's outside the hotel if you want to go anywhere, their prices were always reasonable.
This is not a 5 star hotel, and doesn't pretend to be, but it is good value for money, it is in the right place, and worth considering if you are going to spend any time in Belize City.

On site is a casino and cinema showing the latest films, as well as a small bar by the reception area.

Room tip: Use comparison sites for prices, the hotel website was the most expensive, and we saved more than 70% on their prices

I’m not sure where to begin regarding this hotel. We were so disappointed because the hotel looks beautiful from the outside and it has an ocean view. However, inside is a completely different story. I have never been in a hotel where the tub is filthy with grime running down the side of the tub Where the sink is missing the stopper and the counter is so dirty that I’m not sure if the bathroom has ever been cleaned except for a wipe down.
The smell in the gym was unbearable to the point where we couldn’t even work out for more than 10 minutes because it smelled so badly.
The continental breakfast was also not appetizing at all. The coffee was burnt, and there were flies around the food.
It really is a shame because it’s a beautiful hotel from the outside as I stated earlier, but they really need to do something about their rooms and the cleanliness of the inside.
We did let the front desk know about the room condition and she said she would let the manager know, but didn’t even apologize.

Good hotel, friendly staff, clean rooms, good food, and fabulous views. Well situated for short walks in the area to restaurants or just walking. (Just be ready to see a lot of garbage while walking).
Some of these restaurants will be reviewed.
Swimming pool is mostly unattended, with area having no clean up done regularly. Disappointed with general lack of pride to be a resort hotel.

Room tip: Stayed for a week.. after dinner stayed in room, as (talked with locals who also do not go out after dark). Daytime great for exploring.

After reading other recent reviews of this property, we were a little nervous. But it seems we had a much better experience/perception.
Yes, the building is very much in need of some updates. The property however was clean, the staff friendly, and we loved the beautiful view from our room. Some reviewers mentioned issues with water: ours worked fine. We had hot water for our showers, no issues with faucet or toilet. The room furnishings were dated and showed wear and tear; linens were clean but also faded or slightly stained. Our biggest nuisance was the ceiling fan: it was really loud! But with some simple upgrades this hotel can once again shine. And in the meantime we found it a comfortable, affordable and safe waterfront accommodation in a central location.
