Great spot, friendly staff, comfy room

Reviewed Apr 26, 2022
We stayed here recently and loved it. The location is amazing - right on the Esplanade in Cairns, a short taxi drive from the airport. I'd recommend getting a room with ocean views because it was wonderful waking up to those views, even in rainy weather.

The rooms were clean and bright, everything worked, the shower was awesome - we were on the top floor and the water pressure was great, and the water was always hot. We had a one-bedroom suite along with a sofa bed/couch in the lounge. The sofa bed was not super comfortable but what sofa beds are? The room had everything we needed, though you should know they are not allowed to supply toasters.

The dining room was not open when we went, but there are lots of places to eat brekky, or you can supply your own cereal etc and eat in your room. Muddy's cafe across the road offers a discount to Cairns Plaza guests, you just have to show your room key holder with your room number on it.

You're walking distance to the marina and the excellent restaurants there, which is also where a lot of the Reef cruises leave from. You're about a 10 minute walk from the excellent Cairns Lagoon, a free pool that is a welcome place to cool off during stinger season. I'd also recommend the Cairns Art Gallery, also walking distance, which was exhibiting the 100 years of the Archibald when we were in town. We did a big walk to the Cairns Botanic Gardens also, but that's probably a bit much for your standard tourist.

The staff at the Cairns Plaza are brilliant - super friendly, helpful, and we always felt they had time to chat to us. Nothing was too much trouble. I wish I noted the names of the people we dealt with! One gentleman gave us some excellent recommendations for activities. The reception desk is staffed 24 hours, which is great.

Highly recommended! But you also need to be realistic - if you want a super-quiet area, don't stay in the heart of the tourist district. It wasn't noisy when we were there, but you could hear planes from the airport (our kids loved watching them fly over the water), people on the Esplanade at night, etc.

Unfortunately we had to move rooms after the first night due to the street noise and vibrating air conditioner. The second room wasn't much of an improvement and we had sleepless nights for 3 nights in a row. I asked if we could cancel our remaining nights, but we were not allowed.

Dear fionasunner

Greetings from The Cairns Plaza Hotel and thanks for your recent review.

Thanks for bringing to our attention your first nights experience with us with regards to the street noise and airconditioner.

We offered to room move you to the top floor of the hotel and you accepted this and unfortunately we were not aware of any noise issues from you after the move.

You booked this reservation through Qantas/Jetstar hotels and if you wanted to cancel this booking there would have been a cancellation fee through the booking agent.

We have not experienced any noise issues from other guests staying in higher floors of the hotel and will ensure to keep this in mind in the future.

Again, thanks for your review.

Take care and stay safe.

We stayed here over New Year’s Eve for 4 nights. We chose to stay here after walking past the year before. It was a great choice. I needed to change my reservation a couple of times and reception were extremely helpful and flexible .

We stayed in room 607 which is a Suite and it accommodated my family of 2 adults and 2 children comfortably.

Our suite was on the top floor and it had a magnificent view. We could also see the pool below. The room was clean, spacious and modern.

Very close to restaurants and if you like Indonesian food, Bagus cafe is right beside and serves delicious food. Otherwise it’s a very short walk into the main city area.

It’s also across the road from Muddy’s cafe and playground.

Our room was extremely clean and house keeping do a great job with their daily room service and are very friendly.

We were able to see the fire works for New Year’s Eve from our balcony. Slightly blocked from the Crystalbrook round hotel to the front right side. It was still a great view.

We would definitely choose to stay here again when we visit Cairns again.

Dear luvofholidays

Greetings from The Cairns Plaza Hotel

Thanks for your recent review and your wonderful comments.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and happy to hear that you booked with us after walking by the previous year.

We must agree with you our housekeeping team do a great job with in the cleaning and servicing of our guests rooms, I will pass on your comments to the team.

Bagus Café right next door is very handy and does offer good food choices along with Muddys.

Its good to know that even though the hotel building across the road didn’t block your view of the fire works completely.

Thanks again, we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.

Take care and stay safe.

I had stayed here previously in 2015 and was not so impressed but looking on the website of the renovations thought we would return as very reasonable rates. We had a king suite ocean view room. Wonderfully decorated, clean and modern. Very spacious with large TV for relaxing tea/breakfast in the morning. The real stars of this hotel are the staff, nothing is too much trouble and very friendly. The were happy to store our bags for 2 days (no charge) as we travelled to Port Douglas and store them at check out and even offered an area to freshen up after the Cairns humidity, if we needed to fly. 11am check out also free. Location is great with a short walk to the Esplanade. This revamped hotel with is its very reasonable rates and fantastic staff has won me back over and will most definitely return

Room tip: Ocean view rooms great

Dear shed_ga

Seasons Greetings from The Cairns Plaza Hotel.

Thanks for 5 star review and your recent stay with us. We are very fortunate to be locally owned and operated and have great owners that take pride in the hotel and attention to detail with regards to the ongoing enhancement of our guest rooms.

Your King Ocean View Suite is quite large and does offer all the modern cons that you would expect these days.

We are very happy to hear your comments about our stars of the hotel being our team members, again we take pride in our team members and will pass on your comments to all.

It is very pleasing to know that you have noticed the difference from your last stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.

Stayed here with husband and our 2 twenty something sons in a family room. Good sized room with kitchenette, microwave, fridge and crockery etc. The restaurant was closed for renovations, so they directed us to Muddy's Cafe on the front pretty much directly across from the hotel, so this wasn't a problem. Also short walk along the front to the RSL Club which was a great spot for dinner.
