We returned to the Pineapple Beach Club resort for the 6th time in April and May2024, to celebrate my 60th birthday. This is the first time we have returned since the pandemic, and following some updates and upgrades to the resort. Firstly our room, we always request the top floor of one of the Ocean view rooms, these are accessed via a number of stairs, but the are fully aware of his, booking these rooms for the spectacular views over the resort and Long Bay. Our room was definitely updated since our last visit, primarily the bathroom, gone was the American style, low level tub with a shower above, and in its place was a large walk in shower screened from the rest of the room. The room had been redecorated, the old large TV unit was gone, and replaced with a low level drawer unit with a flat screen TV above (which we rarely used). The ocean view rooms are large, spacious with a very large bed, and sliding doors out onto the balcony. The room was everything that we would ever need, it was clean (the rooms are cleaned every other day by very friendly and helpful staff), and for those that it is important, the Wi-Fi does reach these rooms.
The resort itself had some noticeable upgrades, the on-site shop had moved from its original location, and whilst in the same block, a new coffee shop had been built, with a large covered patio area outside. The shop was now next to the new coffee shop. As the resort is all inclusive, the coffee, which I am told by my wife was very good, was included in the price of your holiday, it also supplied small pastries and ice cream, all served by very friendly and helpful staff. The resort remained well kept, with grounds staff maintaining everything to a very high standard.
The beach is as always beautiful, soft white sand and again well maintained. We are aware people ask about seaweed washing up, and during our stay some was washed up during the night, the ground staff cleared it quickly, ensuring it was clear by the time guests had finished breakfast and were heading to the beach. Just off shore the resort moor a number of disks that float (I do no know what they are called), which you can walk out to, and then just relax in. These had been changed since our last visit, and had increased in number.
The staff were as always extremely friendly treating guests more like family than clients. It was sad to see that some of the regular staff were no longer at the Pineapple, but a number were still there, and how they remember us is amazing, but to be greeted like we were was incredible. The new staff were just as warm and friendly, and could not do enough for us. They organised the daily events that take place at the resort, and the evening's entertainment, which included a wonderful beach party, and carnival evening.
One of the notable changes was the restaurants, the Pineapple Grill which was once enclosed, was now open, with a large veranda where guests could sit for their meal. There was also the addition of the Orchid restaurant, which specialised in steak. The orchid has a strict dress code, which requires the men to wear long trousers, collared shirts and closed shoes, which is not much to ask. The Pineapple Grill and the Chef De Pietro was more smart casual, and the Topaz buffet was more relaxed with regards to dress code. The variety of food at the topaz was good, I am a fussy eater (apparently) and never had any issues, there was always plenty of food I could enjoy. The food served at the Pineapple Grill was more al a carte, which I sometimes struggle with, but again there was plenty for me to enjoy. The Orchid served what I think was the best steak I have ever had anywhere, it was cooked to perfection, it was much larger than I expected, and tasted amazing. The servers in these restaurants were extremely attentive, I could not have asked for better service, Another new feature is the OutHouse (formerly Mary's outhouse), where during the day, you can get the best jerk chicken and barbecue ribs,, now on a Wednesday evening it is open for a meal (which has to be booked), which was really good. It was a more traditional approach, food in coconut shells etc. which made for a different experience.
Booking the Pineapple Grill, Orchid etc. was not an issue, we queued in the morning at guest services and could always book a table for our chosen restaurant, although it must be borne in mind that this cannot be done prior to arrival at the resort, only once you have arrived.
I attend a gym regularly at home and I am happy that the Pineapple has a really well equipped gym (for a hotel), with Cyber resistance machines, a good selection of free weights, and cardio equipment (although the journey to the gym could be considered sufficient cardio!).
There is now a $5 a day per person Government levy, which we used to pay (it was referred to then as an 'exit tax') which seems to have returned, as well as a $24 per night surcharge, which the resort apply (we understand that most resorts charge this, some include it in their overall fee, where as others, such as Elite keep it separate), we were fully aware of these charges, if you book with Elite they are clearly stated on their website. For this holiday, we booked via BA, who also made them very clear from the outset. The $24 charge does include Wi-Fi which used to be an additional charge, and which if Wi-Fi is important, is really quite good across the resort.
Overall the Pineapple has improved from our last visit(s), and it was really good then, the owners (Elite Resorts) have obviously invested in it during the pandemic (and it is understood that further investment is planned), we thoroughly enjoy our visits to it, and will most definately recommend the Pineapple Beach Club, we will be returning. It has to be said that you find many returning guests at the Pineapple, with 6 visits now completed we are still novices compared to some, who have been retiring over 20 times, which we think speaks volumes about the resort. Many guests state that they never return to a resort, or even an island twice, but make an exception for Antigua and the Pineapple.
Antigua is a wonderful, beautiful island, that is very welcoming, with very friendly residents. I do not have any issues with waling around the main capital, St. Johns, I feel safe and I do not stay in the 'duty free tourist area around the dock' I walk into the main town which is really very interesting.
