An absolutely authentic Lunenburg experience

Reviewed 4 weeks ago
This is an absolutely authentic inn right on the main street in Lunenburg. If you want something corporate and cookie-cutter, this isn’t for you. Each room is unique and simply work. It reminded us so much of the (late) Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui, as it is built of wood and every space and hallway is different. Our room had a surprisingly large king bed. But I’m delaying on the real reason to stay there, which is the owner, Mr. Kim. He is FANTASTIC! Helpful, attentive, and hilarious. For example, he carried our friends’ bags upstairs. Who does that!?! As we had driven there and the inn has no parking lot, Mr. Kim had arranged for a spot just a few steps away. There is also a for-pay breakfast available. Just alert the front desk the evening before and, who else, Mr. Kim will be there the next morning at the time you desire to cook it. If you want “old Lunenburg,” look no farther than Smuggler’s Cove. If you are visiting in tourist season when the streets might be jammed, rest assured that there is a parking spot in front where you can register and offload your bags.

Stayed one night in June. Can’t beat the location within walking distance to the waterfront, stores and restaurants. Candace checked me in. We chatted and found out she lived in Hudiksvall Sweden for 25 years not that far from where my Dad grew up. The world truly is small. Thankfully there’s an elevator, so I didn’t have to lug my luggage up a flight of stairs. There was a mini fridge in my room and an AC unit. Room was quiet. For $10 you can have breakfast next door. Scrambled eggs, yogurt parfait and a homemade croissant. Great stay. Would stay again.

An ideal place to stay if you're visiting Lunenburg. Just a minute or so away from the waterfront and near all the shops and restaurants.

Rooms are comfortable with fridge, air con etc and bed was fine for a night's stay.

Excellent location. Spacious room. Elevator is great if traveling with seniors. Michael, the manager/host, is fantastic! Super friendly, funny, helpful and hard-working. Would definitely stay here again. Restaurant on ground floor (burrito bar) relocated to Bridgewater and they haven’t found anyone to take over space. However, Michael and staff offer a breakfast option in the former restaurant space for $10 CAD that is tasty and filling.

Thank you for such a lovely review. We do miss Rascals Run now that they have moved to Bridgewater. Who knows what we will use the space for in the future, a cafe, larger breakfast space, a Korean ice-cream shop, a sushi restaurant....
Welcome back again to find out what we come up with ;-)
We hope to see you again!

The good things about this hotel are the location and the friendliness of the owners. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It is easy walking distance to great restaurants, galleries and the waterfront.
On the other side of that list, the parking is on-street, which is not good, but off-season it was relatively easy to find. Metered on one side of the road, 2-hour on the other, but apparently you can just stay in the 2-hour. I can imagine that mid-summer it would be problematic. Breakfast was not included, and this was the only hotel on our entire trip where that was the case, but there is a nice little coffee shop two doors down with great baked goods.
As far as atmosphere, the whole place felt a bit sterile. Not very welcoming. After a number of cozy little inns, this place just felt chilly. Not from the hosts at all, just from the decor. Again, the hosts were very kind. The lobby just feels like walking into a doctor's office or something.

The six of us (5 adults, 1 infant) checked into 3 rooms at the Smuggler's Cove on a busy Friday night. We were welcomed warmly by the owners who made every effort to make sure we felt at home. They even came out to make sure we had a legal parking place! All 3 rooms were clean, quiet, well-furnished, comfortable, and very well maintained. Just a great little hotel in a great little town.

A couple of nits, which come with the building and its location. At least some of the bathrooms are a bit small, though that comes with the territory in older buildings. The parking is on-street, as Lunenburg was laid out and built up waaaay before cars were conceived. But all that contributes to the town's and hotel's rustic charm. No chain hotel ambiance here!

As a parting personal touch, the owner came out and took our family's picture against the mural on the hotel's outside wall he had commissioned. Lots of interesting, local touches in the painting, done by a local artist over 3-4 months. (He's a good photographer, too; it wasn't just a "snapshot").

Yes, we would highly recommend this hotel; we might even schedule our next visit to Lunenburg around room availability at the Smuggler's Cove.
