Hector made our stay at Oleo unforgettable! Every day as we made our way down to the pool side he would greet us with such a friendly and positive manner that it would immediately brighten our day. It was as if he was able to anticipate our every need, just as we were ready for more drinks, he would be there to take our order, sometimes even anticipating what we were about to order, and just bringing it straight over - this happened several times with water, cocktails, food and iced coffees!
Hector truly felt like a friend during our stay at Oleo, his work ethic and positive attitude is inspirational and we will genuinely miss him now that our stay has come to an end.
As for the hotel itself, on the whole we thought it was great. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, and the facilities were good. As all inclusive resorts go, we thought the food and the drinks were decent, although if you don't like drinks sweet you might struggle because they use a lot of sugar syrup in their cocktails.
My personal favourite restaurant was Hakka, the Japanese restaurant, where the sushi was exceptional! The Mediterranean restaurant Almar was also very good and I paid extra for the "romantic dinner" one night, which is a bit expensive for what you get but certainly worth it if you are celebrating a special occasion such as an anniversary or planning a proposal as I did.
It was nice to be right there on the beach but the amount of seaweed both in the water and on the back was unbelievable! I'm not sure if this was due to the time of year or because there had been heavy winds come through the week before we arrived but it put us off spending too much time down at the beach or in the sea, which is a bit of a shame but nothing anyone can do about that, just thought it would be worth mentioning for anyone picturing white sandy beaches and clear blue waters... Cancun beach does have that, just under a thick layer of seaweed.
Finally, we had upgraded our room to a superior sunset double and while the room was good enough for what we needed, there are certainly areas for improvement. Most notably, the shower door seemed to be installed incorrectly, as it only opened out into the bathroom, where the floor was uneven, causing the door to jam at about 45 degrees so you had to step down the side of the toilet to get into the shower. Then, there was a gap under the shower door so the water would all leak out into the bathroom from the shower, taking at least two towels to soak up afterward. This was a bit of a hassle but we made do with it, had we been staying for longer than a week I probably would have complained and asked for a different room. I would certainly recommend upgrading to one of the Inspira suites if you can afford to do so.
Overall I would recommend Oleo to couples looking for an all inclusive stay on Cancun beach, but just set your expectations accordingly. A good mid-range resort with everything that you need for a nice holiday, but nothing too exceptional.
