True Relaxation on the Beach

Reviewed 3 weeks ago
We loved our stay at Pelican Beach! They have such a cute set up where you truly are right on the beach. The accommodation were clean, comfortable and private and it is amazing to be less than 20 steps from the water. You can hear the waves from all of the property. The barracuda beach bar is part of the hotel and has amazing sunset views. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The little breakfasts each morning were good and homemade. If you are looking for a place away from it all for relaxation and disconnection, this is definitely your place!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Pelican Beach Hotel on a weeklong vacation in Turks & Caicos. We stayed at Pelican Beach Hotel on North Caicos for the first four nights of our trip. We took a ferry boat from Providenciales, then rented a car and drove to the hotel, the only resort on the island though there are some rentals. We were greeted kindly and guided to our room and asked when we would like breakfast delivered. The breakfasts were delightful and we enjoyed them on our porch looking out to the water. It was the second week of December, and initially we were the only ones there, but then there are only about 6 rooms. The hotel is directly on the beach, very clean, nice landscaping and gorgeous views of the turquoise water. The hotel is family run, now operated by Donna Gardiner, the daughter of the original owners. The staff take pride in their work and provided helpful information whenever we needed it. The Barracuda Beach Bar was steps away and is also right on the beach. An open air bar with friendly staff and wonderful food and drinks (try the I-Ain Ga-Lie beer from Turks Head Brewery or the Rum Punch, as well as conch fritters and lobster.) Bring strong deet insect repellant to keep sandflys at bay (trust me!). Absolutely gorgeous sand beach and plenty of other beaches nearby. We had some windy weather and some rain but mostly sun or sun/clouds with 80 degree temps consistently. Highly recommend staying at the Pelican Beach Hotel. In fact, we returned to Provo for the last few nights of our trip and stayed in a luxury hotel on the beach, and we kept saying how we missed Pelican Beach Hotel and wished we had stayed there the whole time!

Room tip: Bring strong deet insect repellent for sand flys. Ferry boat is not in great shape but it gets you there! Not all stores have signs.

We stayed at Pelican for 4 days, and it exceeded our expectations for an island-style beachfront hotel. We chose the "Sea Fan" suite, so can't comment on the other rooms. We found the staff to be friendly and usually efficient. Owner Donna is interesting to speak with. No problem with the pick-up from the ferry. Loved the Barracuda Beach Bar – perfectly located and provided a chance to meet some locals. The only downside is that the kitchen's menu is pretty limited. While tasty, it can seem monotonous after the first three days. (North Caicos doesn't have good supply lines.) And, yes, sandflies and mosquitos are a hazard anywhere on North Caicos, especially at dawn and dusk on windless days. Long if narrow beach is good for walking. We would go back.

So if you like quiet and out of the way with amazing seafront/beach this is worth considering. The bar on the beach is splendid and the food fine (although pricey as everything in T&I). Be warned about mosquitoes and other bugs. They are horrid.
But the over top reviews are misleading. First, our room was not cleaned when we arrived (found dirty towels and food remains). It was much better cleaned on day 2, but the skanky shower curtain never was.
Second, the first day breakfast was shockingly bad: bowl of fruit with stale bread. But again on day 2 we received lovely cakes alongside this.
Third, the room walls are paper-thin.
Fourth, the beds are falling apart and squuek at tiniest movement. So you will hear *everything* in two rooms.:)
If you don't have a car/rental you are kind of trapped, but again for some that's the point.
Sixth, the whole hotel lacks mosquitoes nettings on all the windows so you can't leave windows open at night or dinner.
The airco is splendid, but shower and other appliances can use a face-lift. We didn't always have warm water.
We also didn't hit it off with the owner so we also had some odd interactions, but I saw her be very warm to others so maybe we rubbed her the wrong way. Then again, the dirty room was dirty before we arrived and somehow she didn't arrange for pickup at ferry.

Room tip: Bring mosquito repellant

What a beautiful spot off the beaten path for an authentic Caribbean experience. The setting is idyllic and the white sand beach is steps from your room. The rooms are nice, clean, and simple. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The owner Donna is very sweet and attentive to her guests. What a great place to unwind in a beautiful, quiet, uncrowded setting. The Barracuda Beach Bar and Restaurant has excellent food and drinks. The daily breakfast served in your room was a great treat too. Get to North Caicos and have an authentic Caribbean experience. We won’t soon forget this trip!
