I was a little apprehensive because of stories I had read about the damage hurricane Ivan had caused. Grenada had been hit hard after a lull of 49 years of no hurricanes. I decided, after a very positive talk with the resort management, to go there anyhow. After all, I did need the vacation badly, and I loved Grenada as a destination in the past. This is a decision that I will never regret.
What hurricane? It was difficult to find any evidence of it here at Bel Air. The conclave of colourful buildings sits on a pretty hillside overlooking St. David's Harbour. Cottages and villas are nestled among flowers and greenery that had been maintained and nurtured with great care by a terrific lanscaper, Yves. He is the man responsible for making the resort so wonderful and beautiful looking. I returned from Bel Air after a total of 26 days of luxurious comforts about which I cannot stop raving, but if you're willing, here we go.
I can't stress enough how fantastic the management and staff are at Bel Air. I arrived and was warmly welcomed into the office by Rhona, the assistant manager, who handed me a cell phone to use while there and gave me the key to the villa, then showed me there. From the moment I got there to the moment I left for home, it was the most comfortable and pleasant vacation I have ever had in Grenada, or anywhere else in the Caribbean.
The staff in housekeeping, which are perfectly overseen by a non-stop wonder woman named Cathy, are outstanding in every possible way. This resort is clean, no it is super clean everywhere you go. There is absolutely nothing you can't ask of the staff, and when you do, it magically appears that day and always with a big smile. If you wanted to go touring or you needed a taxi, the office staff would gladly arrange it or anything else you wished. They even let me use one of their computers to do some tasks that I needed to do and that was kindly included at no cost.
I loved the luxuriously appointed villa so much that many times I just wanted to relax on the long verandah while listening to soft music on the DVD player, overlooking partially hidden villas and cottages in the trees, and watch several beautiful sailing yachts slightly rocking at anchor in the harbour. A fresh cup of steaming coffee and the harbour lit up by a fantastic sunrise coming up over the hill behind was the way to start the day. What more could you ask for? The feeling I was being pampered was not imaginary, it was very real. The thick plump towels, even the soap was the best. Cushions were placed all over the villa, the fridge had been stocked with fresh baked bread, cheeses, crackers, and all kinds of other goodies. Even the ice cube trays had been filled, ready for service. The coffee maker, toaster, dishes, cutlery, everything was top quality including the most comfortable bed I can remember.
I ate many meals in the resort's Waters Edge Restaurant & Bar, which is of course, located at the water's edge, and laid out in all the best traditions I would expect to find in a top hotel, only better and beautifully decorated. That was great in itself, but then I ordered my first meal. It was served professionally, it looked great, and tasted even better. The sunsets are magnificent from here. Now I knew that my wishes for a great holiday were well on the way to being granted.
The owner/manager, Susan Fisher came over to introduce herself, and kindly asked me to join her for a drink after dinner. I did just that, and enjoyed the very positive, friendly personality that was immediately obvious in this lady while we conversed about Grenada. Susan couldn't have been more gracious if she tried, but she didn't have to try very hard because it came so naturally. I was introduced to guests and met the staff. The guests and staff turned out to be a really great group of people that have since become friends. That is really fantastic, a five star resort with people who are totally laid back and genuine. The friendly bartender, David and all the waitresses were eager to please at all times, without being intrusive. I had many more meals at Waters Edge, and at times, a few drinks passed my lips. Everything here aimed for complete relaxation and good service. It was a good place to be.
There is a games lounge over the restaurant with a great view where you could read or play a board game. The resort sports a store where you could buy snacks, groceries or gifts at the same prices as you would be charged at the supermarkets in St. George's or Grand Anse. I happened to notice some prices one day while in town, and it was all true. If the store in Bel Air didn't have what you wanted, they would get it for you on the next trip to the markets which was almost daily. That's special service.
I saved the best for last. After dinner on more than a few nights I would step into the large jacuzzi tub filled with hot water, and relax in exquisite comfort for about an hour in my villa. A cool drink and the soothing hot bath capped off the day perfectly, and made for a restful sleep afterward.
I hope to return here many times more.

Hi everyone: It is with MUCH sadness that I inform people that Susan Fisher, the owner of Bel Air Plantation, passed away suddenly in June. She was my BEST friend and also like a sister to me. The resort had been closed for almost 2 years; I do not know why this website is still up; I hope soon it will be taken down. And I also hope someone will purchase this beautiful place and carry on the tradition of a beautiful and classy resort that Susan worked so hard to maintain. R.I.P. my dearest friend, Susan Fisher!!!

My partner and I have just returned from one of the most memorable holidays we have ever had. We spent two weeks at Bel Air Plantation and as the title of my report indicates it was truly a slice of heaven.
We arrived tired from a long trip and were pleasantly surprised upon checking in that we were given an upgrade to a larger accommodation than we had booked. The villa was just perfect, spacious and beautifully appointed. This was just the beginning of an incredible two weeks!
The resorts website and any publicity given to this unique holiday haven do not do it justice, it is a real gem and even now as I write my review I find it hard to describe it in a way that paints a real picture of what it about, but I will try my best. Tranquil, restful and picture perfect are all words that come to mind. Yet it has the added bonus of having just the right mix of "activity". You can stay to yourself or mix in with the cast of characters, whatever strikes your fancy.
The resort is situated on a lovely bay and chock filled with tropical charm. The gardens throughout the grounds are breathtaking, the pool glorious yet intimate, the villa more than met our expectation and the restaurant is light years above the normal Caribbean standard. Upon reading my own words I feel like I sound over the top, but this little gem is exactly that.
To top it off the owners and staff are probably some of the most down to earth, yet personable people we have had the good fortune to know and "know" is an appropriate word. We felt like we belonged from the first day. Susan and Fred, the couple who own the resort are very unpretentious and wonderful hosts. They both are characters straight out of a novel who fit what Bel Air is all about, Caribbean charm, classy, yet friendly and low key. They, along with the staff took wonderful care of us, made us feel at home and part of the magic which this place is. We would often see the two of them having a swim in the pool, bathing their lovely dog, Captain, or simply enjoying a drink and conversation with whoever happened to be at the bar. Wonderful, interesting stories abounded, the conversation was never dull!
We will be returning as soon as we can, which hopefully is very soon.

My boyfriend and I spent weeks researching various resort options and settled on Bel Air Plantation because it looked to be a beautiful setting and a relaxed place. It's definintely relaxed in the sense that there wasnt much to do. THe plantation itself is much smaller than we would have liked, and the options for walking were fairly limited. Outside of lazing in a chair, there is precious little to do. Unfortunately, we were plagued with intermittant rain during our stay. We were basically stuck in our room with few entertainment options...not even a servicable gym.
While this might be a nice place for a honeymoon where you expected to spend exactly zero time outside of your room, if you are interested in doing anything besides sitting in a chair, I would be hard-pressed to recommend it.
The food was pretty stand island fare, and while perfectly acceptable, nothing to write home about either. I guess that's not so different from what one gets in the islands, though. Still, for the difficulty in traveling to the plantation, it is hardly worth the effort.

If you like a peaceful, relaxed, place to stay with seaviews & very low-key nightlife - this is the place for you. It is slightly off-the tourist track, set in several acres of tropical gardens on a hillside overlooking the bay. You need to remember this is not a beach-side complex with the associated activities - it is a tranquil haven away from the usual tourist hustle & bustle. We absolutely loved this setting and would thoroughly recommend this place to somebody looking for this type of quieter holiday. We stayed in a villa - the accommodation was of a high standard, spotlessly clean and, all of the staff were extremely friendly, helpful & efficient, nothing was too much trouble for them.
You may wish to hire a car to see what the island has to offer (which is what we did), or there are local tour companies that offer excusions. Be warned some of the roads are challenging! but don't let this put you off.
We are not usually the types to return to the same accommodation, however, if we return to Grenada in the future we would certainly consider staying at the Bel Air again.

My husband and I just spent a wonderful vacation at Bel Air Plantation. Despite the recent hurricane the resort was fully functioning and looked as if nothing had happened in terms of hurricane damage. Even the grounds were in great condition. Some of the trees looked a bit damaged but virtually everything else was green and lush.
This is a real gem of a resort! It is upmarket but very friendly and comfortable. The accomodations are superb, beautifully appointed and very private. We booked a cottage and were upgraded to a villa upon arrival, what a wonderful surprise. A chilled bottle of champagne was waiting for us in the villa along with other drinks, snack items and breakfast supplies. What a great start to our vacation which was indicative of the marvelous week ahead of us.
I can't say enough about the staff! Each was efficient, friendly and very proud of the resort and island.
It was a wonderfully relaxing vacation and we thoroughly enjoyed the resort and island.
Despite the recent Hurricane I would encourage people to visit the island and I would highly reccommend this resort. There is evidence of the hurricane throughout the island but many restaurants and other tourist businesses are open. Many of the locals expressed to us the need for tourism now more than ever and I can certainly understand why.

we've just returned from a wonderful time of sharing with family and friends on the island of Grenada. the big draw to this island was the wedding day of our nephew Jon and our new niece, Monika. however, we enjoyed many other wonderful days and nights doing all sorts of things while staying at Bel Air Plantation. this resort is outstanding beginning with the professional staff: Rhona, Kathy, all the servers and housekeeping - we all miss their warm smiles and generous spirit. the accommodations were not only comfortable, but pleasing to the eye, too. the foods at the restaurant and all meals served to our group were well prepared, pleasingly plated and delicious. Bel Air Plantation is a great destination designed to please it's guests in every way. we were fortunate to have spent time here, not only with our own family and friends, but also with our new friends we made at the resort - the staff! thanks for the memories! Family and friends of the wedding party stayed at the Bel Air for a week and it was memorable in every aspect. Rhoda, Kathy, Susan and the staff attended to every detail no matter how small. Our villas were just suberb, each with a breathtaking view and every one different pastel colors with gingerbread trim. From the moment we arrived the staff was attentive arranging a bar b que around the pool for the first evening's festivities. Recommendations and transportation were arranged for us for restaurants and tours. The on site store was well stocked and any requests for items not available were purchased for us at the same price as in town. No request was denied including fresh parmesian cheese. The wedding itself was perfection, the ceremony was outside overlooking the water with an arch hand decorated with palm leaves and local flowers. The reception was perfection as we had about 45 people all seated at beautifully arranged tables on the wrap around porch. There was plenty of room for dancing to the local reggae music. The staff at the Bel Air showed true Grenadian hospitality from the waiters, waitresses to the cooks. Bel Air is a wonderful facility in every way however it exceeds all expectations for a destination wedding. We occupied every villa and the infinity pool was a great gathering place for all during the day and even in the evenings after dinner. There is no need to leave the grounds as the restaurant is one of the top in Granada. The menu was varied , dinners were delicious, breakfast included pancakes with local nutmeg syrup, fresh fruit and eggs made to order. The wedding cake was a local cake made with spices in orange juice and rum and a sweet icing. The location is excellent, trails for walking to other local beaches allowing an opportunity to work off some of the fine food. Kayaks and internet are available for free and the staff worked with us to set up parties at different villas during the week. Two thumbs up for the Bel Air, highly recommended for any occasion.

I came across this site after our horrible experience. I hope people can heed my advice.
After spending months researching places to stay for the family vacation, we came across Grenada. A couple people at my office had been talking it up so I decided to find places to stay. That's when I came across the Bel Air Plantation. Out of all the places to stay, Bel Air was rated heads and shoulders above the rest. This is when the trouble started. When I went to setup reservations, they stated that there were no children. Fine I figured, we could see if our friends wanted to take a couple's vacation with us. So we figured out dates and booked the trip.
Finally a few months later we made our way down to Grenada. Bel Air arranged for a shuttle which was disaster since the guy showed up an hour late and nearly left half our luggage on the sidewalk. We arrived at the resort where we greeted by the staff and shown around. The resort seemed to be in nice condition with everyone busily working away. My friends and I split off to our separate rooms. Upon entering the room and looking around there was an undeniable musty smell. My wife and I are not usually one to complain but it was a very strong smell. So I went over to the desk to ask to either clean the room or for another one. After being asked ten times about the smell they said they would see what they could do. Walking back to the room I realized I had left my key by accident. Right before returning to the desk, I heard the lady I had just spoken to talking about "typical Americans and their complaining." I went over picked up my key and headed back. I told my wife who was furious and I told her to calm down since it was only one person. I called my friends and asked how their room was. They told me upon entering the room they found an unmade bed and towels on the bathroom floor. I then told them our story. Since we agreed that maybe the people were just behind schedule, why not just explore and let them fix everything up for us. So we began to explore around the grounds a bit. Again everything seemed in nice neat order. When walking down towards the beach we heard (loudly), two men arguing. One was arguing about how he hadn't been paid in 3 weeks. The other said the money would be there soon. My friend thought maybe they were just trying to make us feel pity for tips. Either way I thought to myself, great this place gets better and better. Once we walked what seemed like 5 miles to the "beach", we found it, which happened to be a bay. Lovely.
Going back to the room a few hours later, it still had the same smell. So I called up the front desk and they said we could move to a new room. We moved our stuff to the new room and went to eat. We went to the onsite restaurant. Based on the reviews I was expecting great things. The drinks were watered down and the food was tasteless. I figured maybe it was a bad night. Right before we went to the beach, one of our friends was attached to her toilet to say it nicely. We hoped it was just her adjusting, but either way it just kept piling on. So my friends stayed behind, and my wife and I went to the "beach." Note a beach usually has some form of water movement and some form of sand in the water to walk on. Upon returning to the room, the toilet was leaking and managed to soak the floor. I went over to the front desk and explained to them about the toilet. They said they would send someone over. Our ill friend stayed behind, while, her husband ventured with us back to the restaurant, hoping the food would be better. We still received watered down drinks and rather tasteless Yellowfin Tuna. We went back to the room and found the toilet merely shutoff but not fixed. I called the desk to ask and they said they couldn't fix it tonight, we had to wait till tomorrow. They said that they would add it to our bill. I said add what? They said we caused the damaged. I said thats impossible, it was from the back of the toilet. They insisted, so I went down to the desk. She said it was in their policy and any damage by guests was their responsibility. I asked to speak to the manager, she said she was it. I asked who else I could speak to and she said the owner Suzanne. About 15 minutes later Suzanne came over and asked what was going on. I explained and she explained in a slurred voice that was the policy. I kept explaining and after a few minutes she became very agitated and told me if I didn't like that policy, I shouldn't have stayed here. I said I agreed with the policy just that it was not our fault. She came closer, yelling at me and said sorry nothing I can do. She said she caters to important clientele and can't be bothered by cheaters such as myself. I went over to our friends room and told them the story. I went back to the room, packed our stuff, and we all took a taxi into town. I called my credit card company and told them that I was defrauded and to cancel the transaction.
We decided to stay at the Grenadian which was better but not great. Needless to say it was a vacation from hell, something I figured that would happen to Chevy Chase, not us. It provides a good laugh for my friends and I but was not fun to live it.

We have just returned from our trip to Grenada and the Bel Air Plantation.We had the most beautiful villa with stunning views,peace and quiet,really friendly helpful staff,although they were a little quiet and shy at first !The only thing we would say against it is it would not be terribly suited to younger children and there is quite a steep climb to some of the villas. We can highly recommend this away from it all haven.
