This bed and breakfast is a good place. You can see birds and wildlife. It's a very welcoming place and the owner makes you feel like your home. Your a part of the family in the birds and bloom bed and breakfast. It is quiet and is peaceful.

WE visited off season in a blizzard! We had visited Grand Manan in the summer but wanted to experience the island off season. Lorraine took us in, and even served us dinner. (Restauants closed offseason.) The house was beautiful, the accomodations were comfortable, and we had a very enjoyable time.

I really enjoyed our conversations during that last winter storm. I noticed your response was not quite as good as my other guests and wondered if I could have done something to make your stay just a little bit better. Your comments are much appreciated.

Birds and Blooms is a beautiful spot- Lorraine was a gracious host, super helpful, picking us up at the airport, taking us to rent bikes, driving us up to Whale Cove for dinner one night. Laying in the hammock in the breeze, watching and hearing the birds, smelling the flowers- pretty relaxing! Good food too.

My husband, 10-year old daughter and I booked a room here for a two night stay, expecting a room with a double bed and a twin for our daughter. When we arrived Lorraine told us she "had a problem" in that she had given that room to another family, but she assured us she had another room with a bed for my husband and me and a comfortable mattress for the floor for our girl. It was not a comfortable mattress but a 3 inch deep foam pad, with bedding that wouldn't stay put. We also discovered that all 5 rooms share one full bath - to be fair the website does not state the rooms are ensuite, and it's not that I mind sharing, but thank goodness the place wasn't full, or getting to our early morning whale watch would have been a challenge. As it was there was just one other family - and it turns out they had been given the same welcome the day before we arrived - in other words, told that their room for 4 had been "given away". The room we had was fine other than the thin mattress for our daughter; the gardens were lovely and the breakfast on our second morning- waffles and fresh blueberries - was good. I understand it is likely difficult to make ends meet on this very small island, and innkeepers don't want to turn people away, but this pattern of "bait and switch" style room assignment is not very hospitable and makes it hard for me to recommend this B&B.

We missed the 5pm ferry and had to take the 9pm one, which ended up having issues and had to be swapped out so by the time we arrived at Birds and Blooms, it was past 11. As soon as we knew we weren't going to make the 5pm ferry, we called and left and left an answering message. We called twice thereafter to provide updates and left another message but the owner never answered the phone. She said she called us once but we didn't have reception at that time. Granted, she was probably busy because when we arrived there, we were told she had a full house and she had given our room away. So our family of foor crammed into the room she had downstairs, with my husband sleeping on an old, musty mattress on the floor. The next morning, we woke up and found there was only one bathroom upstairs for everyone to use, which I found pretty unhygenic. This may be my fault for not fully understanding this prior to booking but it us very unclear. Due to the volume of guests, we had to wait until past 9.30 for breakfast. Overall, the breakfasts were okay but not great. It definitely wasn't a complete breakfast. Thankfully, we were told we would be moving rooms because the other guests were checking out and the room upstrairs was much more comfortable for our family of four. We also found the owner had given the same room "excuse" to another family so we weren't the only ones who were subject to this. The owner did give us some tips about which dulse was the best but for the most part, we went off our own research. The room is fine (if you get the right room) but overall, it wasn't the best experience and we wouldn't recommend staying here.

When we arrived at Birds and Blooms, Lorraine was not there, even though we had called her the previous day to confirm our arrival time. We waited on the deck ( where we found a trapped rat!) for a few minutes and tried to call her on her cell phone. She didn't answer and phone mail box was full, so we couldn't leave a message. After approx. 30 min., we tried calling other places to stay, but everyone was full. We tried her cell phone again and this time she answered. When she finally arrived , she said she was at the car wash and having coffee. Tried to make excuses for her phone not working. My husband mentioned the rat on the deck and she tried to laugh that off as well. She said she was trying to trap squirrels. When we booked our room, she said she had a room with a private half bath. All other rooms share a bathroom, so we requested the room with half bath. When she was showing us to our room, she "forgot" which room we had booked, and started to show us to one of the other rooms upstairs. When we got to our small room, it looked like it was used for an office. The desk had a copy machine, and the drawers were full of stuff. The "private half bath" was actually not private, but used by her in the mornings, Food was OK. No protein on the first day, so we were starving by lunch time. No juice or water offered. We had to request fresh towels for the second day, even though she said the towels would be replaced. All table conversation came back to her and her family, so it was difficult to interact with the other guests. My husband and I have stayed in several different B&B's , and this one was definitely the worst for hospitality. Her gardens are beautiful, but the strong smelling lilies should be left outside.

Response from Lorraine M, Owner at Birds & Blooms Bed and Breakfast
Responded Aug 31, 2015
I apologize that you did not receive the appropriate welcome to Birds & Blooms Bed & Breakfast, and the detail usually given to my guests every need was not given. My Mother had just died and I obviously did not give you the hospitality that you deserved. I decided that it would be very unfair to spoil everyone's holiday plans by cancelling their reservations as there was very obviously no where else on the island for my guests to stay. I was unable to give the 100% effort that I have always given my guests. When you did not arrive 45 minutes after the ferry landed I thought that you had decided to tour the island or eat first. I did go out for a while and took my cell phone with me. Unfortunately it was in my purse and I could not hear it ring, because the ringer had accidentally been turned off. When I checked my phone for messages I saw that I had missed a call. I immediately called you back and was back at Birds & Blooms within a few minutes. The rat in the trap had me as horrified as you were, and I did laugh out of embarrassment. I had been trying to catch the squirrels that had been scaring away the birds. My website clearly states that the bathrooms are shared. I am very sorry you were under the understanding that it was your private bath.

My wife and daughter and I had a wonderful time at Birds and Blooms on a recent stay on Grand Manan. Lorraine was a wonderful host and we felt at home the whole time. Because of weather issues our trip schedule kept getting moved around, and our two day visit to Grand Manan was not the original two days during our trip that we had expected. B&B was very flexible with us on this. She was very accommodating also to some specific dietary issues our family has (no milk products) that I didn't mention as soon as early as I could have.

The B&B has a nice central location along the island's main route for those that want to explore North Head, but also Seal Cove and the southern area of the island. For those taking the Seal Island Puffin Tour as we did, it's just a quick drive from here to the dock.

Lorraine can also really help with your island plans, having a lot of knowledge about Grand Manan.

It was a pleasure to meet Lorraine and stay at her place, and we recommend Birds and Blooms to other travelers!

What a disappointment this b & b was. We were promised a queen bed and got a double. The house smelled of kitty litter but there was no cat, just a small dog. While Charlie looked cute he apparently was trouble. Our neighbor reported that he pooped in her room, ate her arthritis medication and chewed her electric toothbrush. Lorraine, the innkeeper seemed most interested in reclining in her lounge chair. There was no air conditioning and it was very hot. We had to share a bathroom with four others (potentially 6 as there was an empty room). Lorraine would tell you that there is another bathroom but it is located downstairs right outside her room which has a queen bed. The bathroom was quite small and there was no bathmat which made for slippery exit from the shower. When returning from dinner, the kitchen was in a mess. Leftover food all about the counters. I wouldn't have eaten there but conveniently when I informed Lorraine that we would be leaving by 8:30 the next morning ( a day early I might add) she said that is when she would serve breakfast. When we got up and left about 7:30 she was eating breakfast. There are bound to be much better choices on the island

We booked this B and B based on previous trip advisor reviews and we were disappointed. Upon reading reviews we thought it would be a quaint B and B experience...not the case. The gardens were beautiful and the deck lovely. The dog was friendly but allowed on the furniture...he liked the back of the couch to look out the window. Loraine helped us get reservations at two differ at locations. Our room was not ready when we arrived around 2:00 PM...not a problem...we went for lunch and toured the island...came back around 5:30, still not ready. Loraine was across the street having dinner. Left again and went to the Provencial Park and watched the ocean...it was beautiful there. When we came back the small room was ready. The top quilt had a musty smell to it and it appeared the room was used as an office desk and fax machine etc. No bathroom en suite, just a half bath in the hall way, which other people used. Breakfast was fine...coffee, toast, hard boiled eggs and bacon....no water or juice.
I had brought blueberries as a gift which she served. In full disclosure, I own a B and B and I know full well that they are all different. This experience was not one of our best. We still love Grand Manan. We will still use trip advisor and trust there opinion...even Loraine said she knows this is NOT a five star B and B.....guess most of her guests think it is....we left early

I am very sorry that you were disappointed in Birds & Blooms Bed & Breakfast, I apologize that your room was not ready when you arrived, and I did not expect you back before nightfall. Your bedding was drying on the line in the sunshine and fresh salt air. I carefully inspected the quilt on the bed and could not find anything musty, but it has been rewashed. The wooden desk in that room does have a printer on it and I occasionally print off articles for my guests who usually use the desk top for their suitcase. My breakfasts are always accompanied by lots of fresh fruit and tea and coffee and so I do not usually serve water and juice but would have been most happy to have supplied it had you requested it. I take great pride in sharing my home with my guests and the fact that until now I have been voted as the number #1 Bed & Breakfast on Grand Manan Island. This might be attributed to recent death of my mother, it could be I am slipping.

So sorry, I hadn't noticed your questions. My rooms are large and each room has a double bed. The price of the room is just $90.00 and includes taxes and a breakfast for two. We are ranked number 1 of the places to stay on Grand Manan. We are located in Grand Harbour and we have had nothing but Happy Customers. Check our reviews.
