I LOVE Chumbe Island. I have been visiting the island since the early 2000s and this is probably my 7th visit. The quality of the reef and the snorkeling is the best I have ever seen it and the bungalows and island experience itself has not changed since my first visit (which is a positive thing). While the rest of Zanzibar becomes more and more crowded, Chumbe Island is still an oasis of peace just a short drive and boat ride away from the mainland.

The price includes all of your meals, snorkeling and other activities while on the island so while it may look expensive, the prices are very competitive once you add in all of the extras.

Chumbe is also an incredible educational experience for anyone, and I highly recommend it to families - I visited this time with my two daughters ages 12 & 15 and they both learned so much about marine life and conservation. Be sure to do the night snorkeling if they offer it while you are there! Omary, their head ranger, has been working at Chumbe since the 90s - he's full of stories about Chumbe and his journey as a conservation ranger!

Chumbe is not for everyone - the bungalows are eco friendly which means they have composting toilets and solar power. Make sure you are comfortable with that before you go!

During this visit I stayed for two nights but next time I go I will stay for three. Thanks so much Chumbe!

What a perfect stay on Chumbe island during our time in Zanzibar!! It was the perfect bridge between the adventures of our safari and our relaxing hotel stay following.
First of all, the island is beautiful and I highly recommend that if your time allows you have at least one night there to get the full experience - we wished we had more than one night!!
It is the true meaning of eco tourism and although the accomodation is fairly basic it is very comfortable and has been done extremely well.

J2 was our guide throughout, taking us on a snorkel when we first arrived, a forest walk in the afternoon including a trip up the lighthouse, a short crab walk in the evening and another snorkel trip at sunrise on the day we left!! He clearly has a great passion for conservation and for all of the animals that make up the island and surrounding reef knowing all of the names of the species and when best to see them. The food here is the best that we had in Tanzania/Zanzibar with traditional dishes throughout all meals. All meals and soft drinks are included in the trip and alcohol was extrememly reasonably priced. This is a place for those who are able to be a bit physically active and who aren't phased by the basis amenities including a solar heated shower that you need to hold to rinse and a compost toilet!!
We are so glad we squeezed this in on our honeymoon, it was truely a little slice of paradise!!

This is an amazing eco-stay place supporting such a wonderful cause. We spent two unforgettable days here enjoying one of the best reefs we’ve ever seen. The food was excellent and sumptuous. The staff were extremely warm, courteous and knowledgeable. In two days we had so many memorable activities snorkelling, inter-tidal walk, island walk, crab walk. We recommend all of them fully. The staff organised dinner for us on the beach under the stars, it was truly special and will stay in our hearts forever. We want to mention Chagga for his outstanding knowledge of the reef and marine life, also Hamzar for his wonderful client orientation and cheerfulness. If your budget allows come and support this unique marine park and the efforts of people working here. It’s a truly special place on earth. P.S the sunsets are amazing

This is actually a special place. We spent two nights and despite being in the middle of nowhere we had the time to relax and to sunbath at the beach but we also enjoyed all the activities, from snorkeling to crab walking. You can feel the touch of really being alone with the nature and the ocean. We appreciated much the efforts the team is making to preserve this small paradise, also they were very flexible, we booked directly with them and we were able to reschedule our trip due to Covid restrictions without any issue. All in Chumbe is done to not interfere with nature, they recycle rainwater and use organic soap and there are compost toilets too. The staff is very professional and ready to help. The food also was superb. Worth a try at least once in a lifetime

This might feel like paradise in perfect weather, but we unfortunately had very windy days for our two-night stay on the island. Snorkelling was only possible for an hour, and given the tide schedule there was no swimming off the beach during most of the day. Yes, there is a forest walk one can take and maybe stretch to 45 minutes.
So it depends on your attitude: while we didn’t mind sitting and reading and disconnecting for the rest of the time, it felt like a very overpriced quiet time.
The cabins are “back to nature”: no doors or windows (meaning you share your cabins with all the critters), no plumbing (compost toilet and rainwater shower), and of course no air conditioning ( 24/7 hot and humid). On the positive side you can pack super-light: bathing suit, flip flops and the lightest shirt will do for those two days (it all will be damp anyway).
A few people who booked multiple nights left after the first night - it can be challenging to sleep in the heat with all those bugs (despite mosquito net).

The food was good, the staff was caring (other than loud music during the night from the staff lodge), and of course you money helps the conservation effort for the reefs!

We loved it so much that we think this place deserve more than to spend just one night. Ben, Diana and the whole team were kind and attentive and made our stay very special. We loved the peaceful quietness of the place. If you love nature, need to recharge your batteries and go snorkel in one of the most amazing coral park in the world, this is a place not to miss. Ben is a marine biologist so will share his knowledge and stories with you. The chef is doing a great job with delicious dishes. The birds make sure you are awake on time for breakfast. We will be back! They also organise day trips with snorkelling, lunch and wtaching these giant coconut crabs, but really if you can, spend the night.

We only spent one night at Chumbe due to a tight schedule, but it was probably the highlight of our trip to Zanzibar. Our eco-hut was amazing, and I felt just like Robinson Crusoe. We had to arrange an early trip back to the mainland, which cost $50, but they were very accommodating. Our snorkeling time was great, and our guide very professional. There weren't as many fish to look at as at Mnembe, but the coral looked healthy and was very pretty. There were 7 huts and our party booked two of them. Two huts were no-shows and one hut had a solo traveler, so at night we felt like we had the island to ourselves. The food was fabulous. Top notch organization.

Hi, I don‘t‘ give this place 5 stars because of fancy food ( it was pretty average and repetitive) or because I slept so well ( it was unbearable hot and sticky). But this all does not count much as this the wildest place you can find in and around Zanzibar. Raw nature at its best. Unbelievable crabs everywhere, for 2 to 60 centimeters big, about the best coral you can find anywhere, birds, dolphins and sharks along the shore. Perfect swimming at high tide and such a profusion of life at low tide. First time I visited I did a day trip. Now I stayed one night. Next time it will be 2 or more. This place is beautiful at a point you will never forget. Cant wait to return. Dont expect much in terms of food and lodging and dont think about the rates charged. Its worth it.

We had to push our reservation at Chumbe for years due to COVID- they were super respnsive and helpful. We had an incredible time. The island is beautiful and our one day stay was packed with activities. We snorkeled over their beautiful reefs, walked through the forest on the island, and heard a presentation on their eco-friendly and conservation efforts. The meals were delicious with breakfast/lunch overlooking the ocean and dinner around a palm tree by candlelight. We even got to see the incredible coconut crabs at night. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful day and perfect addition to our honeymoon.

We enjoyed our two-night stay in at Chumbe Island. Our experiences comport with the reviews of many others who note the pleasure of snorkeling, the interesting guided walk, the joy of a relatively deserted beach, excellent and helpful staff, fine cuisine, and fascinating bungalows that is designed with sustainability in mind. I would only add that we were glad to support this kind of eco-lodging in a marine nature reserve especially because of its educational mission, which is available to children in Zanzibar as well as students, young and old, from elsewhere. When we were at Chumbe, the staff hosted four American graduate students. We hope to be able to return in the future.

We visited in August and it was just perfect and I understand July just a bit warmer so you should be fine. There are seven bungalows and all the same with a double bed on the top floor up a short staircase. I would guess you would need three bungalows and the boys should be fine on their own (so long as relatively mature and not scared of night sounds...) as really no-where to go and the bungalows such fun they would love it. The island staff are simply amazing and will make sure everything is okay for you
