We stayed here one night only as a stop gap arrangement. After staying here one night, we were to check into courtyard by Marriott which was 200 meters away. But in hindsight I wish I had booked all my 3 nights here. Rooms were twice as big as Courtyard and half the price. Everything was clean. The furniture is old but has a charm about it. The bathroom is huge. A small verandah outside along with a clothes drier adds to the thoughtful touches. A decent pool, a nice little cafe. It has everything you could want.

A nice place to stay, nicely decorated, clean and welcoming. The staff were very helpful and nice. It is a very busy area so there was always a lot going on, the street leads to the beach, a short walk away. Handy to shops and restaurants.
It would have been better if people weren’t allowed to smoke cigarettes in the restaurant and around the pool where families with children were. The pool was a nice area and I heard the massages were great there.

This is the worst hotel I have stayed so far. Below are the points one should consider before booking.
1. It is very old style hotel. Rooms are smelly and dirty
2. There are many insects and flies and we had to kill many of them in our room during our stay.
3. The phone service was not working so for everything we had to walk towards reception.
4. We booked for 3 pax also their room online showed capacity of 3. But they charged us extra for 3rd person.
5. You can't use their swimming pool as it has dead insects and flies floating in it.
6. They don't have card to lock rooms. Instead they will give you one big key and lock using which is very tedious.
7. The bed sheets provided was dirty.
8. We tried to keep our doors always closed still can't stop bugs to fly in.
Please don't book this just by seeing picture online. Please do visit room before booking.

Response from Puri Cendana, Guest Services / Front Office at Hotel Puri Cendana

We think you should check with Expedia whether you pay for 2 person or 3 adults, since you made the booking with them and not directly to us. We received your hotel voucher and payment from Expedia for 2 adults and not for 3 adults, that’s why you need to pay for the additional. We showed the voucher to you when you’re check in right and it showed for 2 adults. Our hotel is not a modern building style because we want to highlight the traditional charm of Bali, with the authenticity of the building architecture, the interiors, the garden, the food etc., that is why our hotel tagline is “Redefining Traditional Living”, if you like modern building it is understandable that you don’t fit into the style. As for bugs, yes, since our garden is quite big with 50% of the land dedicated to green area, sometimes there were bugs in the area, nevertheless we make sure they’re not inside the room and harmless to our guest, but if you open wide the door for some time, of course there’s always possibility. We think you're not making a fair review, probably because you were disappointed with your booking through Expedia.

We just got back from three weeks in Bali and started our trip at the PURI CENDANA in Seminyak. It was a half block from the beach and right next door to the upscale Sofitel Hotel. The hotel has about 20 rooms and most are two-story affairs with a sitting room and huge openair bathroom downstairs and an airconditioned sleeping loft upstairs. (Warning: Stairs are very narrow and steep). Breakfast is served in the open-air CinCin restaurant next door. It has a nice pool and lovely well-maintained gardens. This is not what you would call an upscale resort, but we loved the location, the bathrooms were really cool, and the place was spotless. All for $30 a night.

I have to admit I loved this place. This is exactly the kind of hotel you probably want in Bali: it's close to the beach, affordable, and oozing Balinese character.

It's only about 150 metres from the beach. There are only two hotels between this one and the beach. What more needs to be said about that? To be honest, the chances are good that staying at a hotel right on the beach in this part of Bali is out of your price range. This is as close as it gets for most of us. (I should add that the beach is usually a mess in the rainy season when the winds are easterly, around January to March. Better to come at another time. This is true for all of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.)

This hotel is not expensive, especially for what you get. Most hotels near this one are considerably more expensive. There's one exception: Grandmas Hotel next door, which is about the same price and yet brand new. Which hotel you prefer depends on whether you prefer a grand, old, slightly dishevelled Balinese dame (Puri Cendana) or a slick new easyhotel (Grandmashotel). To me it's a no brainer.

Puri Cendana consists of six two-storey buildings constructed in Balinese style. The property is not large, but the grounds are tropical, verdant, exotic, serene and filled with Balinese touches that never let you forget where you are. You feel yourself getting calmer just walking to your room. Flowers, frangipani, hibiscus, star fruit, mangos, coconut, birds, butterflies, snails, shrines, incense, statues. Duelling house cats. The fattest dogs you've ever seen. Is this a hotel?

The two rooms I stayed in were identical. Spacious, Balinese design, cool, dark, a little primitive, high ceilings, stone, wood, Balinese art and furniture. The bed has a mosquito net, but I didn't really notice a mosquito problem. Wooden bolts with padlocks rather than modern locks. (Should I worry about that?? Nah.) This is not a modern complex. It was built some time ago, by people who care about Bali.

The bathroom is a surprise: wooden doors, huge, sunken, with glass walls and a view of your own private courtyard garden. And the tub may have been the biggest tub you'll ever have seen. Big enough for the two of you and your two kids as well. So big you have to take a set of stairs to get into it. You have to DISCOVER this bathroom and it doesn't always do what you want. The window doesn't quite close. You have to wait for the hot water. The tub is, well, too big too fill. You have to sympathise with the cleaning staff.

Aircon worked really well, surprisingly for such a big space. Modern TV. There were no English stations in my first room. Turns out you have to pay a little extra for international TV, which explains why I switched rooms after a few days. I tried to hold out as long as I could. Once I switched though, I wondered whether it had been worth it. There were only about 5 English stations anyway.

The restaurant served a standard, unvaried breakfast, with three different options. Not a buffet, not luxurious, but it was enough and it was tasty. Fresh bread and fresh fruit.

I had quite a few meals at this restaurant because it was convenient, inexpensive, standard fare and I could eat it around the pool. Mostly western food, but some Indonesian. The service was usally quite good. I liked the fruit shakes.

The pool area was small and not large enough for the hotel. But most people seemed to be enjoying it. It suited the rest of the hotel and gave the place a resort-like feel. When the weather was nice it was the perfect place to read a book and cool off. They even had a massage set up in the back and it seemed to be popular.

The hotel is located on a main road leading to the beach. It's busy up to the hotel, but then from the hotel to the beach it's fairly quiet. There are many convenience stores, restaurants and bars nearby. Laundry, bank machines, etc. It's all there. If you walk up to Legian Road you get to that part of Seminyak that has some of the best upscale clothing shops in Bali. The pedestrian infrastructure (like the roads in most of Indonesia) is not good. I got tired of this walk after a while.

Nearby there is an outstanding internet place. The hotel has wifi around the pool at the hotel, but it was simply much easier and more comfortable to go to this this cheap, air conditioned internet place.

There's no gym at the hotel, but there's one at Seaside (walk south along the beach; about 100 m past Arunya) and of course Hammerhead is about a 25 minute walk. I never did find a lap pool in the area. Running along the beach is quite doable at low tide.

This is the kind of hotel I really like. I feel fortunate to have stumbled onto it, because getting a good but affordable hotel in Bali is no easy matter. I think independent, budget-minded, unfussy travellers who like idiosyncratic hotels would be happiest here. This is not a hotel with package holidayers. It's too small for that. It's not really a place to come for one or two nights. It takes a little while to get used to it. If you want a big resort or a modern hotel, keep looking.

Puri Cendana:
The Pros: close to the beach (less than 3min walk); close to Seminyak's bars; restaurants & shops (10-15min walk), room rates start from $80US a night; has it's own pool (with a good cheap masseuse); the rooms are spacious, air conditioned with good sized bathrooms (nice deep bath); free wi-fi; peaceful garden setting; traditional Balinese architecture/design; staff are helpful & welcoming;
The Cons: it's an older hotel in need of some maintenance (the shower head needed fixing, drainage in the sink was poor, some of the woodwork around the windows was; the rooms don't have a safe; the included breakfast is fairly basic; smoking is permitted everywhere (rooms, poolside, restaurant); the wi-fi can occasionally drop out; non-guests can use the pool & sun lounges;
In summary if you want to try somewhere apart from the large generic boring hotels, can't afford your own villa and want to be close to beaches, shops & food, then this is a perfect location.

I have to say that I was a little worried booking here knowing that it is an older hotel. You know how some hotels in bali grow old and tired after time?... Well I really don't think this one has... Yes the facilities like the pool and restaurant are a little dated, but still clean and well maintained and definitely up to standard. My room was fantastic. Very large with king size bed, satellite TV and one of the biggest baths in the bathroom that I have seen in bali. You have a choice of 3 breakfasts, Indonesian, American and English included in the room price at a very low 650,000rp a night. Do yourself a favour... Get on it, you won't regret it!

fantastic location with great garden, near to the beach and gado gado restaurant.
the staff is very warm, friendly and always happy to help.
very nice pool area and restaurant.
liked the old bali style which is disappearing, too many new hotels without character around.
the only two negative things are the poor internet, not possible to work in the hotel and the missing
security box in the room

Stayed in this resort Oct 2014. The gardens are lovely and lush which makes it very peaceful and private. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly and willing to do their best. The breakfast was all that you needed and we ate at the restaurant twice for dinner and wasn't disappointed. The food was plentiful and delicious. If you are looking for a 5 star accommodation then you won't find it here. We were looking for a comfortable authentic Bali type hotel (instead of the boring flat concrete wall hotels that are being built everywhere) and we found it at Puri Cendana. At $80 Australian a night including breakfast (and that was the most expensive option) you can't go wrong. How anyone can complain about this hotel for the price is beyond me. We loved it. 100 metres to the beach was a bonus. Can't wait to go back.
