Nestled in a scenic location, the Villas Sol Beach Resort offers stunning views and easy beach access that guests appreciate, along with commendable cleanliness throughout. However, some visitors feel that the resort doesn't provide good value, pointing to lackluster food and additional expenses. While the atmosphere buzzes with activity, complaints of noise and dated areas surface. Service reviews are mixed, with accolades for staff friendliness but gripes about dining and shuttle services. Room experiences vary, with praise for comfort and views but some reports of maintenance issues.

Very good hotel, pretty clean, nicely located. Most of the staff is smiling and really helpful. We had a trouble with our balcony door when we arrived and 5 minutes later, someone was in our room to repair it. The room (we had an upgraded one) was perfectly comfortable and air conditioning worked well. The shuttle service works great. Drinks are hard to beat, not too much sugared and tasted real fruits. Buffet is small, not very varied, but tastes pretty good and really did the job for us.

You have to know that you won't have water, juice, coffee (except one), soft drinks in your fridge. Nothing. You'll have to refill your bottles by yourself. Also, no bar at the beach (2 days/7, a table was installed at the beach with juice and water).

However, when we checked out, the woman at the front desk told us we had to pay an extra 50$US because two towels in our room had vomit and needed a special wash. What the hell??? The housemaid sent her a picture. That was totally absurd and we refused to pay because nobody had been sick among our family. She insisted a lot, said we had to pay. We still refused because that didn't make any sense. She downgraded the price, but we still refused to pay. My wife and I asked for a supervisor and, 5 minutes later, she told us that we could leave. Another family, that left by the same bus, had to pay an extra fee because they had supposedly left the room "dirty". Be careful, some staff members look dishonnest.

Hello! Thanks for your review! About to the process when our guest produce a damage in the rooms or the propiety, each department (could be house keeping or maintenence) report to reception and reception call the rooms to let know the customer the situatition (obiously not all the time we can contact the guest becouse they are doing a tour or are using the pool or restaurants...) In case the towels with blood or barf that is delicate to clean to prevent illnes by virus or bacterias, often we never reuse that towels for this reason we charge to the guest, or minimun charge deep cleaning. This process is tryning have hight standars on cleaning process. Is important inform that we do not charge to you, even though the towels in side to your room did smells to vomit (you told was juice, any case is not accptable), the manager decide do not charge, becouse you never accept that responsabilitie. Respect to the minifridge is part to the furniture in side to the room like the tv, security box, coffeemaker, iron, beds chairs in others... but we do not provide drinks in side to the rooms, the all inclusive provide unlimited drinks but just on the bars. Finally about the coffee package, yes we provide one package like courtesy, if the guest needs aditional coffee must to pay for that.

First time at an AI and probably the last. From the minute my daughter and I checked in, it seemed that the hotel was filled with rules: return the blue towels, eat at your assigned time, check your inventory, call before you leave to check out. No one told us about the difference in shuttles and the Condovac driver was not too polite in telling us that little rule.
For a deluxe, two queen bed room, stay for four nights, you would think they might have more than one coffee pack, a tiny bottle of shampoo, one small soap bar and two bath towels plus extra charge for maid service. Only one chair on the patio for two people. Just didn't seem like a friendly first impression.

Not too happy that they wouldn't let tour operators inside the gate -- only tours booked through the hotel. Especially during a downpour. Had to wait outside the gate by the road. Thankfully, one of the gate operators let us wait inside for the hotel shuttle when we returned. Also would be nice to have a place to get coffee earlier than 8:00 since we had early tours booked. When asked, we got a very firm, "No". Not even an offer for extra coffee pack for the room.
On the bright side, all the staff at the restaurant were very busy , yet very friendly and helpful. We happen to think the food was great, especially the nachos at the wet bar. Nice variety and always had fruit available. Drinks were well made and bartenders were friendly.

While this is not a 5 star hotel, it is a very nice hotel with lots to do. The rooms may be a little stark with no paintings or art on the walls, they were very clean and the views from the balcony are million dollar views. The food is good. Very typical Costa Rican flavor. If you are coming to Costa Rica for American Cuisine or fancy dinners, you will be disappointed at probably every hotel in the region. Your goal should be to discover and enjoy all the things that Costa Rica is about. The service at the hotel is awesome, the activities are great and the entertainment is great almost every night. They offer shuttle service to the beach or you can walk. We walked almost every time and we are 70 years old. There are lots of excursions to do (we went to 9 different ones in the 2 weeks we were there). Relax, enjoy and don't be a ugly American. Embrace the locals.

My number one complaint is the food sucks!!! I have never seen, tasted, choked down such inedible food in my life. They use candles to try and keep the food warm and it doesn't work! Most nights the wind was blowing so it kept the candles blown out. It was congealed, tasteless, and the same thing every single day and evening. What wasn't eaten that night was served again for breakfast! I have traveled all over the world and this is by far the worst resort I have ever stayed at.
My second complaint is the room, It was nearly impossible to get to the balcony in our room. There is 4 inches (I measured) between the wall and the bed that they expect you to navigate through to get to the balcony, which is only big enough for 2 lawn chairs. The bed is hard, or it was to me. I know everyone likes different levels of softness but for me it was like sleeping on concrete. The room was clean, there was that at least.
The third complaint was the alcohol. It was watered down so much that you could drink all day and never get a buzz. Forget about having a bloody mary or mimosa for breakfast, the bar didn't open until 10 or 10:30 whenever they decided they wanted it to open. The pool bar kept running out of ice so you either waited for them to bring ice or drank a warm cocktail. The food at the pool bar was once again cold and very unappetizing. The bread must have been cooked last month. You could have used the hamburger buns as hockey pucks!!
I was so disappointed with this resort. I read the reviews before we went and had hopes that all the negative reviews were just people overreacting but nope. Each negative review is spot on. Save your money and go somewhere else!!

Stayed here for 5 days recently for a wedding. The breakfast was fine, but lunch and dinner were not edible. Reminded me of really bad cafeteria food. We had to spend a ton of money eating out at nearby restaurants because the food was that bad. Some of the food you could tell was reheated from the day before. The drinks were very watered down and weak. On many occasions I saw staff filling up water pitchers with the tap water. This made alot of people sick on our group. Also, what "all-inclusive" doesn't serve alcohol until 11am? At one point in the trip we didn't even running water for 10 HOURS!! The pool by the bar was a little "cloudy" and really needed to be cleaned the entire time we were there. Basically all the pool chairs were broken or falling apart. Forewarning, if you need a fresh pool towel, be prepared to hike all the way to the main lobby to replace your towel. You won't find any fresh pool towels by the pool (made no sense at all). The only reason I gave 2 stars was because the room was very clean and the staff were very friendly and hardworking. Also, the beds reminded me of a bad you had a summer camp when you were 12. Hard as a rock!

We stayed in a 3 bedroom villa at Villa Sol Hotel. First of all, the location of the resort is a 20 minute drive from the airport, which can’t be beat! The grounds are impeccably manicured and well cared for. The Villa itself is beautiful and very spacious. The Villa location provided gorgeous views of the ocean and we enjoyed having coffee and wine soaking up the views from the patio. The Villa had a large kitchen with a dishwasher and worked great to have meals or prep snacks for the beach. There are 2 pools on location to choose from. One pool has a swim up bar and happy hour snacks daily. There is a shuttle to take you around the property (beach, restaurant, etc.). We chose to walk some days as it was just a quick downhill walk to the beach. The beach was amazing! Very clean and calm water for our children to swim in. The resort provided live music entertainment, games for the kids, and pool games. The reception desk was very helpful in recommending excursions and the staff was very helpful and friendly. It was perfect for fun and relaxation when we weren’t out exploring Costa Rica.

My wife and I decided to travel out of the USA for our anniversary this year.
Given January weather and sun in Costa Rica we decided it was a great place to visit.
We’ve been to Costa Rica a number of times in the past, but always to the southern part of the country on the Pacific Ocean.
This year we chose the north end, again on the Pacific Ocean.
Villa Sol was our resort of choice in the Playa Hermosa area.
We’d arranged with the resort to have us picked up at the Libera airport, which the driver was at the gate waiting for us.
30 minutes later we were at the reception desk of Villa Sol.

We went with the “all inclusive package” which included all our food and drink; no more money considerations once we arrived.

The resort was situated on the side of a large hill/mountain a short distance (10 minute walk if you wanted) to the ocean. The resort had a great on-site transportation shuttle which meant we never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes to be transported to our next destination.

Locally there were many traditional water sports available with one of my favorite the sunset cruise.

This is a vacation I’d recommend to anyone looking for a nice location, nice resort, reasonably priced with a lot of stuff to do (or the opportunity to do nothing but lay in the sun and relax).

Ahna Hoke Yoga wrote a review Apr 2022
My husband and I led a yoga retreat/vacation here this February and it was wonderful. We brought 40 yogis. The management (shout out to Cris and Ho Wah) and staff went above and beyond to make sure that we were all comfortable, and had everything we needed. They accommodated our every request. They gladly shifted some things around so that we could have a clean space to practice yoga every day. They provided us with two morning spaces and one afternoon space, as requested. The staff got up extra early to wash and sweep our early morning space. (class started at 6:30 so they were out there very early). The view at Villas Sol is unbeatable, from pretty much every angle. It was incredible, and the new overlook deck is the perfect way to end the day as the sun sets over the sea. And the food - you'll never go hungry. There were many options, and the buffet easily accommodated both vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The restaurant manager, Ethel, checked in with us on a daily basis to ensure we were happy. And save room for dessert, the pasty chef Jeremy will keep you coming back for more. No one in our group went to bed hungry :)

The beach is right there, and Ho Wah can hook you up with any excursion or activity you like...wether there at the beach, or an excursion that requires a car/bus ride to get there. There's plenty to do if you like to be active, and it's the perfect place and atmosphere to grab a book, and to simply relax by the pool. The rooms were clean, and the beds very comfortable. (and plenty of hot water) And, bonus, it's less than a 30 minute ride from the airport.

We plan to lead another yoga vacation next February, as requested by our guests. We love Villa Sol and will continue to return for many years to come.

There is only one restaurant open because of covid and they do not offer a great selection of food choices. My husband is pescatarian and they did not have any fish options. However, the first night there - the chef was nice enough to make him a special dish of salmon. My room Villa 62-1 is up a hill and although there is a shuttle on the property, it is very hard for you to get around. The 1 bedroom villa only has 1 bathroom (which would not have been a problem had it been in the main living area) in the bedroom which made the kids not want to wake us to use the bathroom during the night. The villa was very spacious and had a great view but the beds were extremely hard.

We were scheduled to stay 7 nights but had to cut our trip short and find another hotel after staff made us a dinner reservation for 8:15 when the shuttle stopped running at 9pm. After dinner we were completely stranded on our first night and there was no way for us to "walk" back to our room which was about 1.5 miles away at an incline and in the dark (lighting was very poor). There was no front desk person for my family to call for help. I found another family staying at the resort (who spoke English) and he was kind enough to drive us back to our room. Had it not been for him, we would have been stranded all night. My family's safety was put as risk because he was a complete strange and could have done anything to my family. After this ordeal, we immediately checked out. They have a 3 star rating on RCI and I should have known then that this was going to be a disaster.

Dear CherronJ We appreciate your comments, our restaurant has a variety of local options, we are pleased that our chef prepares something that is not part of our menu as part of our customer service that characterizes us, we have capacity schedules for the three strong times of food as part of the measures dictated by the Government of Costa Rica by the current pandemic situation we are experiencing. Our transportation schedule ends with the last tour at 9pm which is the time that our last seating ends. We have 24 hour staff to provide assistance or follow up on your calls after the front desk is closed and information is provided to you at check in. We are sorry to hear that your stay and the type of villa you chose with the agency was not adequate and did not meet your expectations of comfort.

I didn’t stay in the main hotel so I don’t know about ocean views from there. The hotel is much lower than the villas so I’d go for a high floor, or just call and ask.
