The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan captivates guests with its fusion of historical allure and modern sophistication. Nestled by the Nile, its location is not only scenic but also convenient for city exploration. The hotel's opulent amenities, like the tranquil spa and lively live music, alongside the pristine and well-maintained pool, receive high marks for luxury. While the value is debated, with some services perceived as costly, the professional and warm service mostly offsets any concerns. The accommodations themselves, featuring spacious rooms with elegant decor and remarkable Nile views, are frequently celebrated by visitors.

When we first came here 18 years ago for afternoon tea at the promenade I promised myself that one day we would return and stay at this beautiful hotel. As we were cruising from Luxor to Aswan this february this was the perfect opportunity and we booked 4 nights post cruise.

We stayed in a Palace Prestige Suite with Nile View and as we were disembarking our cruise at 8am I had booked an early Check In for an additional $85. The suite was very comfortable with a large bathroom with 2 pers bath, walk-in shower and double basins and separate toilet with basin. The terrace overlooking the Nile was not big but adequate for a couple of chairs and table and a wonderful place to have a drink while watching the sun set on the left bank.

When choosing between the Old Palace and the New Wing bear in mind that the balconies on the New Wing all have an excellent Nile view but never any sun (north facing) whereas balconies/terraces to the Old Palace Nile View Suites may be smaller but will get sun at some point in the day. If your room is in the New Wing you will also be served breakfast in the New Wing. We encountered a few "discussions" on that issue with guests staying in the New Wing not happy or aware of this.

All the common spaces are spectacular and the pool area is stunning with a gorgeous location on the Nile River Bank.
The food was good rather than excellent and service in the restaurant was personal and attentive.

We visited Abu Simbel while staying and the hotel organised what they call "Meet & Assist" which is basically airport transfers at either end, a guide and entrance tickets. This cost $180 for 2 pers. We had booked flights in advance. The hotel also organised airport transfer on departure.

My only negative is that a hotel of this standard should have a much greater level of personal service. In that respect it falls very short of the standard provided by other high end brands of hotels of a similar nature.

We stayed in December 2019 in a Nile view suite in the new part of the hotel above the spa. Staff here are adorable and the room was spectacular. This whole hotel is steeped in history and the decor is wonderful. The room was enormous and gorgeous, no late check out was available on our suite so they moved us to a smaller room in the old building so we've seen both. If price / availability is an issue dont be afraid to take a garden view room because the pool and restaurants etc all have the Nile view within the hotel complex. Which you will get to see at breakfast etc. I really cant fault this hotel at all. Shout out to Abdullah , Hedra , Wael and Moustafa who were all awesome. We ate most in the Egyptian restaurant which was delicious. The French Michelin star restaurant has a dress code so we didn't go as we were in relaxing mode but will certainly try it next time. Honestly I'd move in if I could.

The only issue I found and be careful, I booked through booking.com and I never book unless I can cancel before the date, the hotel took the money in May for a stay in December and it became non refundable. Trying to communicate what happened with the hotel was difficult as it was through a 3rd party. Id suggest taking screen shots of any advance booking eligible for cancellation. Of course I may have selected the wrong thing but I book tonnes of hotels and dont think I made that error not least because I didn't have £1100 kicking about :D

If you are in Aswan do not stay anywhere else if you can afford this hotel!

Surprise, Arizona
I experienced a one night stay in this magnificent hotel in the new section. Our tour director mentioned he hoped we had enough closet space so imagine my surprise when I walked into a seven room suite! The room had a separate entrance, to the right a closet area with two sets of double door closets AND an open area with closet area. Ahead of the entrance was a room for my suitcases plus two more set of double door closets. Ahead of that area was the living room with a couch and chairs and TV. To one side of the living room was an office area with a built in bookcase and desk and chair. The other side of the living room lead to the bedroom. The bed room had two doors leading into the living room and one leading into the room with a large tub with a heated towel racks and a separate area opposite the tub for the shower and another one for the toilet. Leading off this room was the duel sink, robes and slippers.

Of course there was the glass sliding doors leading to the balcony overlooking the Nile River! The major negative was that I had less than 24 hours to enjoy it! I did not eat at the main dining room but everyone that did said it was wonderful, but slow. Expect a 3 hour dinner, 4 hours of you order dessert.

Stayed here for a few nights for a birthday party in the stunning ballroom.
The property is magnificent steeped in history, and a true taste of Egypt's glamorous past.
Though its true, this is a tourist site in itself and there are tours that get taken through the building, I rarely noticed them and it wasn't a bother.
As well, there were sections that were for hotel guests only.
The original building is full of stunning architectural details and incredible chandeliers.
The lobby bar is old world and truly chic.
The views of the Nile and Elephentine Island are the stuff of dreams.
Pool is totally gorgeous
Breakfast had many options and it was lovely to sit on the terrace and ponder how the Nile in front has been an important centre for 1000's of years
Spa was great and beautiful, and I enjoyed my massage

I requested a shave and they were able to bring someone in on request, but thinking back, the man was frail, nearly 300 years old, had bad eyesight and a shaky hand......the whole moment could have been a scene from Agatha Christie's novels.
But alas, it fit in with the rest of the surreal experience of the Old Cataract Hotel

My room was a lovely suite in the old building with incredibly high ceilings, a fabulous bathroom with huge tub, luxurious bed and canopy, and a beautiful balcony. There was a seating area and the room was large enough for us to host a few guests for cocktails in the evening.

My advice; stay one day longer then you need in Aswan just to enjoy the sybaritic experience of the hotel.

The one downside was upon check out when they told me my credit card wasn't working, and I knew this wasn't possible. It got awkward because they were looking at me like I couldn't pay, and I kept telling them to try again and they simply said it was being declined ( I saw the message , it did not say declined, it just gave a message that seemed more like an error code) and I eventually had to pay with a debit card ( hate doing that, as I love my travel points and this place aint cheap! )
It turned out it happened to 2 other people in my group and the problem was definitely not our cards. It wasn't an ideal situation as we all felt a little put off by the stress of it all, particularly one of my friends had to take out from a bank machine several $1000's of dollars cash to pay for his bill and he was not pleased.

None the less, this is THE place to stay in Aswan, I highly recommend it and I cant wait to return.

We booked two rooms in the older palace part of the hotel and were stunned with the quality and experience of the rooms.

The check-in was a little slow despite doing online checkin but was friendly and accurate. Our rooms were quiet, and had amazing views of the Nile, the prettiest section between Abu Simbel and Cairo. It was nice being able to walk down to the hotel private dock for a sunset felucca ride.

The hotel is centrally located in Aswan.

The only room for improvement is the rather gruff French service at the restaurant -- it took over 20 minutes to even be offered a drink after being seated, and service remained a bit unfriendly, but that seems to be the way at Sofitel Legends. Otherwise this hotel was perfect in every regard, assuming one appreciates hotels with a bit more character or history. The plumbing and internet were in excellent order, unlike their sister hotel in Luxor.

We wish we had more time to enjoy this lovely hotel, that the rates were a bit more reasonable, and that they move to become an Autograph or Luxury Collection in Marriott/Sheraton portfolio.

I had a very pleasant stay at The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract.. The location is prime, convenient for all visitors purposes. A fine mix between art and history in each corner, my booked room was upgraded to a nice and cozy suite, where I enjoyed the lovely Nile view from the terrace. U can smell cleanliness and sanitization every where and safety measures were applied with no deviation. Thanks to the management team for projecting the beautiful and classy image of the company and for setting example for all the staff..
The positive attitude of the staff and taking the extra mile was one noticeable trait..
The hotel was mega clean specially  looking at the difficulty of cleaning antiques.
In Restaurants and Bars you can enjoy variety of culinary arts and services.

I was overwhelmed with my dinner at the ancient 1902 ( French Restsurant)

Don't forget to check pictures and celebrities reviews on the corridor walls moreover take photos beside your beloved ones

The whole experience is overall joyful and hotel is suitable for all guest types and age ranges..every one who has passion towards beauty and biographies.. Am not sure about children 🤔

Thanks to Mr. Mostafa at the front desk for introducing the loyalty program.

The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract.. Already missing you 😘😘 U R Simply The Best. 💖

We stayed 3 nights at the beautifully restored Old Cataract Hotel in a room in the Nile wing which had the most amazing views over the river. We spent many an hour on our balcony - large and comfortable - watching the world go by. The room was very comfortable with a super bathroom with high end fixtures and fittings. We ate most dinners and lunches (as with breakfast) at the Terrace or Saraya restaurants. The food was imaginative with good portion sizes and fair prices for a hotel of this class. Staff were so friendly and attentive. The hotel is full of history with an illustrious clientele but, despite that, staff ensure that everyone feels at home. We loved it.

Let's start with 2 disclaimers: I came to this hotel having heard mixed reviews from 2 well traveled friends and the Old Cataract has to be judged against the criteria of a 5*+ given that Accor is positioning it at the group's flagship location. I'm not trying to be snobbish, I'm simply rating it against Sofitel's own description: Versailles but better

Obviously this is an excellent hotel, the best in Aswan by a mile, and I would stay there again without hesitation. Food is good, rooms are large and confortable, the resort is gorgeous and tbh I thought prices were very reasonable. Was I blown away? No, and let me tell you why.

I don't think the hotel fails at anything bigly, but I think the hotel misses a few points by inches each time and overall it gives a weird impression of missed opportunities.

Let me give you a few examples:
1. The beds in twin rooms are singles (which is advertised when you book), but I just don't understand why you wouldn't put 2 queen beds. The result is a lot of empty space and a massive terrace (with gorgeous views).
2. My friend had warned me about the staff's English (e.g. I asked for towels and was given water bottles) and suggested Accor should invest in classes, I couldn't agree more.
3. I found there was a lack of "above and beyond" approach to service, e.g. one of our cards got stuck in the ATM for about 10' and the answer from the hotel was "Don't worry you just have to call the bank operating the ATM". My view is that at a 5* resort any (appropriate) guest request should be answered by "Yes Sir, let me do it for you Sir". That wasn't the case.
4. While I know that very few tourists drive in Egypt, I was baffled by the lack of parking option (hotel description mentions bus parking, which is a bit deceptive). I get they have limited space on-site but I'm not going to believe that they can't find 2-3 spots somewhere nearby in the city for guest parking.

In terms of tips, I would strongly suggest to stay in the new building (unless you're booking a historical suite) for the view. All rooms have views on the Nile, Elephantine island and the beautiful old building. If you stay in the old building, chances are you'll get garden view and/or views on the newer 10-story ugly building.

Eating options were overall excellent. The breakfast is served by the Nile and food quality is excellent. The terrace and bar are similarly excellent (the menu could have a few more Egyptian options). Contemplating the sunset from the promenade was the highlight of our stay. I did not get a chance to dine at 1902, but to be honest it didn't look very appealing from the outside.

Is this the best hotel I've ever stayed at? No, but it's solid. A few points of improvements are easily actionable and would have made our stay even better. Perhaps a less pompous description from Accor would also lower expectations a tinny bit ;)

We came from our cruise for an afternoon tea that we pre-booked including paying 300 Egyptian per person * 6 in vouchers to gain entry. Tea was actually 360 for the normal option and 490 for the special one. First things first we had no table reserved and it seemed the staff were not particularly happy we showed up we ended up going to a table that apparently had been booked by the Sofitel manager so ended up being kicked out. Since I had given a tip before they did do another table for us next to it. So after a shaky start we ended up getting a great view table. But then we ordered 2 normal tea menus and 2 special ones to and waited and waited more.. hotel Sofitel manager showed up about 20 mn later at his table and was served full tea menus within 5 minutes. 15 minutes after we got our tea but not the scones etc.. after about 45 minutes) and several polite requests where we were told the hotel our teas were being made « fresh » for us we finally got our teas after over 1 hour wait (at least 1 hour more than the manager and his guests). The tea itself were very average, scones were cold and I could not see the difference between the 490 tea menu and the 360 one. At least we had the view.... Before our cruise on steamship Sudan (were service is great) we stayed at Sofitel in Cairo where service is also terrible. Given the manager philosophy to put himself and his guests before paying clients... not surprising.

Quite possibly the nicest hotel in Egypt, the Old Cataract in Aswan has a spectacular location on one of the prettiest sections of the Nile, impeccable service, luxurious amenities, and interiors so rich and authentic that you might just feel like royalty for a day...or more, if you can afford it. Stay in the original Old Cataract building versus the adjacent high rise and splurge for the best room you can afford. Hospitality rarely gets better than this, and my guess is you aren't going to be on the cataracts of the Nile many times in your life. Thanks to Sofitel for keeping this iconic hotel so aligned with its history.

Can you go for drinks on the terrace as a non resident?

Yes, absolutely. We did. It costs £15 each for entry, and you get a little talk about the history of the hotel. Once you have a drink on the amazing terrace, the cost of entry is deducted. We'll worth the visit.
