The Tankamana is a five star hotel (in my opinion). Imagine yourself in a place inside the forest, in an absolute tranquility, with a rustic ambiance and architecture, and at the same time a place when you enjoy a refined restaurant with an elegant wine list, and a comfortable spacious room with all kinds of pampering things. So, if you are looking for a very romantic place, you find it.
I had stayed there in a room that had a king size bed, an ofurô or a jacuzzi baths (I went there three times in different accommodations), an very beautiful bathroom, and a large balcony with a delightful viewpoint of the forest.
The hotel common places are incredible. A heated pool surrounded by a green hill. In an other unimaginable place you will see a sauna with a direct connection with a cold natural water of a little lake. A last thing: the breakfast serving works until that last guest goes there. You really can wake up the time you want.
In summary amazing in all aspects.

We just came back from our second stay at Tankamana in less than two months. I'm Brazilian and live in Rio, and I find Tankamana maybe the best option for a short break from the city - a super convenient 2-hours drive to find refuge in this gorgeous nature on the tropical Mata Atlantica. After having spent a couple of days end of December at this beautiful chalet in the middle of nature, we needed to come back the minute we checked out.

This time we stayed at the chalé Tanka, their best suite/chalét - and were enchanted. A spacious, luxurious chalé with two fireplaces, an immense modern hot tub, an outdoor shower and a huge terrace, totally secluded from all other chalets and facilities. Everything in perfect privacy, yet close to the swimming pool and the main restaurant.

We can't forget how welcomed we were by the excellent staff and their dedication to get out of their way to make guests feel at home and taken care of all your needs and wishes.

Radamés, the main manager, is always present and ready to do anything to make all guests happy - e he was perfect. Everyone there is really eager to make you happy, like Taís and Maria ( on reception) and Bruno in the restaurant, congrats.

We can't forget the absolutely delicious breakfast! Everything you could ask for, with Brazilian delicacies and home made breads and jellies, among so many delicious treats ( like the “pão de queijo” Waffle as well as the mini fruit-pancakes.)

Oh, and for the movie lovers, there’s also a private Cinema Room in the main building that you can rent, enjoy some movie classics and munch popcorn.

We can't wait to be back.

A perfect escape for the weekend! Great staff, delicious breakfast and excellent room! And if you want more privacy, you have an outstanding room service! If it’s sunny, you can enjoy the pool area and have some drinks and appetizers or have lunch by the pool.

The hotel is not a "eco resort" as they claim, but it´s a very good place to relax, cool down and to have a peaceful weekend with your mate. The cottages with bath are very cozy and charming. Maybe the "ofuro" cottage would fit better our interests, but it was not available. The sauna and public jacuzzi are amazing spaces. The service is outstanding.
I don´t give maximum score because I think the price is much higher than the value. There is certainly less expensive options nearby.

We spent an adorable weekend in Pousada Tankamana. The Superiour Chalet with jaccuzi was great, the fireplace kept us warm during the winter nights. The breakfast is served at any time ( which was great), the food in the restaurant is awsome ( we had one dinner and one lunch, the prices are way, way more reasonable than in a restaurant of the same level in Rio), especially we liked Filet Mignon, Pato Zen ( duck), and Truta em crosta de banana ( trout in banana crust). Ah, and they don't charge corkage fee! ( we brought a couple of bottles of excellent wines from our home wine stock, and the restaurant had no problems with us having our wine at dinner). The desserts are very good, too. Try the trio of desserts ( chocolate brigadeiro mousse, lemon mousse, and coconut mousse). The area of the pousada is hude, with two trails one can hike to lose some calories after eating all this great food. There are also a regular pool ( not heated), a natural water pool, a jacuzzi, the game room, and organic garden ( upon checkout you are presented with all kinds of greens to take home! we've got lettuce, mint, spinach, etc). Ah! And we were offered a free upgrade of our room, too! All in all, it's a wonderful, friendly, relaxing place to have a great week end.

This hotel is a perfect weekend escape. If you want a change from the Rio beachscene this is the place to go. The chalet was cozy with a welcoming lighted fireplace. Service is near perfect, very friendly and always ready to assist.
The restaurant serves great food. We arrived rather late but the kitchen stayed fully operative until we had finished a delicious gourmet dinner. Breakfast is superb ( served any time and we had breakfast very, very late).
The gardens and grounds are very well kept and wonderful for a relaxing walk through the woods.
Beautiful swimming pools and so much space that you are unlikely to meet your fellow guests during your walks.
On checking out we received a bag ful of vegs, fruit and herbs from the (organic) kitchen gardens of the hotel. What a treat!
The one drawback is the location of the pousada. It is hard to find and very badly signposted and not very near Itaipava. But once you found this heaven you will not want to leave anytime soon!

We ended up going to Tankamana during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro as we live in the city for about a year now and wanted to go somewhere quiet. Tankaman has great comfortable rooms, and we had a suite with a bath and 2 hammocks. The resort is well kept, clean, quiet and the staff is simply wonderful. Everyone was very genuine and this was indeed a place for a perfect 5 day getaway. Part of them speak English, which was helpful to us.

Access to it can be tricky, we followed our GPS and ended up on a dirt road for about 15km instead of only 4km as it should've.

Daily rate was very decent to the exclusive ambiance and service (approx. R$ 760 per night - USD 360 per night with breakfast included).

We definitely recommend it!

I highly recommend this hotel for the following reasons:
Rooms: big, clean, well decorated and confortable.
Breakfast: good variety in a nice setting.
Facilities: A hidden place, with nice and confortable facilities. A place to relax and forget about everything.
Food: Great. We had all our meals at the hotel, since the food is tasty, with a good variety of dishes and the hotel is far from civilization.

This was the second time I visit Tankamana, and It got even better. Althoug I stayed in a cheaper room (n. 7) because the hotel was totally full I enjoyed as much.
My room was not as charming, big and private as the other chales, but the outside area is so delightfull that it is ok.
In Tankamana you find the most beatifull steam sauna I ever seen, with a natural swimming pool and a waterfall.
There are special private tracks in the middle of the atlantic forest, just 3km long, where you can see all the plants and flower with pure air.
The restaurant menu is wonderfull. Very good food indeed! Fondues, soups, trouts, and a lot more.
A the breakfast is delicius, with homemade bread, jelly, juices and cakes. Try the Petropolis toast that comes with fried egg!
For me the best chale is the numbers 14 and 15 that are near the nutural swimming pool with the waterfall.
But, if you want to hang around Itaipava, I dont reccomend Tankamana. It is far from the city and you have a tuff dirty road to go. The hotel is in the end of this road and there is nothing around. For me this was spectacular for I went there to rest and to hear only the sound of the birds.
