Kingfisher Bay Resort Fraser Island captivates guests with its picturesque setting and serene ambiance, harmoniously blending into the natural surroundings of Fraser Island. While the resort's tranquil environment is appreciated, some guests feel that the accommodations and amenities are outdated and overpriced, particularly noting the cost of food and drinks. Rooms are often described as needing renovation, and though cleanliness is generally satisfactory, some guests suggest it could be enhanced.

Having recently stayed at another island resort closer to Brisbane we were so pleasantly amazed at the quality of service, meals, rooms and overall beauty of Kingfisher Resort in comparison. We have stayed here a few times and it has always been good but the way they have approached the Covid restrictions here is exemplary. It appears all of the hotel rooms & buildings have been painted and refreshed during lockdown. Dining options are sufficient with a great range of menu items available at each place- even the buffet breakfast continues with staff assistance and line ups were minimal in peak times. The Sunset Bar is perfect for afternoon sundowners and the platters (prawn, cheese or antipasto) are good value.
Driving to the scenic spots on Fraser is fun but just to stay at the resort and relax is just as good. It is the perfect place for a few days break away in paradise.

Excellent venue and facilities, very peaceful and quiet. All staff were friendly and professional and wanted to be there, happy to chat and very attentive. We found all the staff great but Rosie in the restaurant and Peter B our bus driver were standouts, as was the young lady in the shop. Everything was perfect, we ate at the restaurant each day and the menu was extensive and the food delicious. The sunset cruise was very relaxing and the snacks eeee amazing. We appreciated the opportunity to earn credits for not wasting water on having our room serviced every day. The bus tour is a must for all though I would not recommend it for children as it’s a whole day. The shops provides the opportunity to purchase anything you might need from fishing gear, swimmers, clothes, thongs, food etc etc. The Gallery has some amazing pictures and the photographer is around to chat with, prices were very reasonable even framed. There is lots of advice and information around safety on the island regarding the dingoes, you just need to listen and follow that advice.
I would highly recommend to others to visit this beautiful location of peace and tranquillity, it’s relaxing or as busy as you want it to be. Well done all staff.

Enjoyed a relaxing stay at the resort over the Easter school holidays with my young family. Highlights had to be the island itself. As we did not have a 4WD, we joined the Beauty Spot Tour. It was pricey but well worth it to see the main highlights of Fraser Island such as Lake McKenzie and the Maheno shipwreck. We brought blow up rings to float down Eli Creek which the kids enjoyed and Ranger David was full of interesting information on the island.
Had a deep tissue massage and facial by Samantha (aka Ajna). She was very friendly and a fantastic masseur. I was so relaxed at the end of it. Definitely recommend a trip to the spa especially if you get Samantha!
The resort offers various activities such as free guided walks around the island and talks by the rangers. Ranger Martin took us on a very brisk walk up Sandy Straits walk and imparted his knowledge on the flora and fauna around us and the history of the island.. If you have the time, join one (or more) of the walks or talks, the rangers there were overflowing with knowledge.
The resort offers $20 credit for each day you don't service your room, which was an excellent way to encourage conservation of resources.
Kids enjoyed swimming in the pools and the sunset on the beach was breathtaking, just make sure you bring tropical strength insect repellent as we didn't and was attacked by sand flies.
The area which requires attention was the systems the resort uses and possibly training of staff. Staff were friendly and attentive but you will get different information depending on who you talk to (sometimes conflicting) and if you need to change something, even as simple as a dinner booking, don't expect it to be done. Verbal confirmation does not mean it's in their system. Just expect to repeat things multiple times...
We were pretty chilled and set our minds on holiday mode so overall, it was an enjoyable trip to a beautiful island.

The resort and the hotel rooms are very tired and dated, and in great need of maintenance and a general upgrade. Some of the staff were good, but many were lacking in basic customer service skills, and a couple were quite rude. Having no pool towels, or even drinks glasses to be able to serve drinks at the pool bar is just not acceptable for a resort that charges premium prices. Food was mostly ok/average, although extremely over-priced. Such a shame as the location is amazing, and the resort could be so great with just a little more care and attention from the owners.

Not one area of the hotel could get the simplest thing right. All 3 Restuarant messed up our reservations, then the bill as well as appalling service in their fine dining Restuarant. Our room was a 2 bedroom villa - it was filthy. Carpets stained and just filthy. Shower door broken and shower waste broken. Air condioning (which they charged $50 A night for) wasn't working. After complaining they brought in two freestanding units that only made it hotter. The kitchen plates and cups were all dirty on arrival and we later found out that this was probably becausr the dishwasher didn't work either. The unit (514) was really dated for what they charged and bring your own cleaning equipment - you will need it! One last thing...we noticed the sheets and pillowslips were layered so after one guest leaves they just took the top layer off ready for next guest. Just a huge waste of money and valuable holiday time.

The name of the resort use 'Fraser Island' often. It would have been great if the managers used K'Gari as well.

Barge and Check in: Checking in at the mainland and then getting the room key was a 2 step process which wasn't very well explained. When booking my barge, they originally got my arrival date wrong even though they had my reservation linked to it. Luckily I called to confirm.

The Rooms: I had a spa room. It was nice and clean albeit dated. I'm confused why we only received 1 plate, one cup one glass when 2 people were booked for the room. Surely they hotel can splurge on perhaps 2 of these things? A close line (either on the balcony or in the bathroom) would have been useful too considering how much time is spent in the water.

The pool: The pools were great. Spent many hours hour there drinking cocktails. A way to order them without getting out of the spa/pool would be ideal.

Sand and Wood Restaurant: The food was surprisingly reasonably priced considering how you're kind of trapped on K'Gari. The food was well cooked and the chef is clearly talented. However, I found the food needlessly complicated with no real benefit. For example the Corn was garnished with chilli and has a creamed fetta on top (which you needed to somehow take off and then wrap it around the corn). Neither the chilli or the fetta added to the corn. It just needed a bit of salt and pepper.

Fraser Island is a spectacular place to visit, the natural hotspots like Lake Mackenzie and Eli Creek, blew us away.
The kids and I hired a 2 bed villa and found it comfortable and well set up. Our villa had a renovated bathroom and so was quite nice however other people told us that there villas bathrooms were very dated!
We loved many things about the resort such as the nice pools, ranger walks, bush ticker tasting and very good quality restaurant meals.
However I must say I was disappointed with some of the service. I appreciate that being a remote location that finding skilled and experienced F&B staff is challenging, but there was some very inexperienced staff in the restaurants.
In addition the ‘handy bus’ service was very poor. If you don’t have a car and have any mobility issues, I don’t recommend hiring a villa. They are up quite a steep hill and the bus service is very sporadic. Eg. There is no bus between 6 and 8pm from main reception.
However despite these hiccups, we loved the stay and comfort of the villa (air conditioning was wonderful in the heat), and will definitely visit again.

We stayed at the Wallum Hotel Room. It’s very basic with a bar fridge, a kettle, TV and black tea only (bring your own). The beds and pillows are very uncomfortable, however the room is conveniently located near the reception and main restaurant.
The staff is friendly.
I highly recommend buying a package that includes breakfast. You will enjoy the buffet with a decent variety each morning: eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, hash browns, beans, tomatoes, pastries, Yogurt, muesli, fruits, toast and juices.
The Beauty Spots Tour is fantastic! Peter was the ranger we spent the day with. He’s been on the island for 25 years and did a lot of research. It shows when he talks you through all aspects of the island. He also has a gallery on the resort with his photos. He’s very talented, so make sure you purchase a photo book or picture. Above all he has a great sense of humour. I felt like I was on a stand up comedy gig all day! Hilarious. Make sure you don’t sit at the very back of the bus, because it gets very bumpy there even with the seatbelts on. During that tour you have the option to take a 15 minute flight. We took it and it was worth the money seeing the island from above, because some lakes you can’t get to by bus/car, like the ‘Butterfly Lake’.
Watching the sunset on the beach is a must especially fir those that are into photography.
Our dining experience at Sand and Wood was great and average at Sandy Bar (no booking required). I wish they had more options on the menu for vegetarians. Be prepared to spend around $30 per dish at Sand and Wood.

We spent 4 days on Fraser Island, staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort.
While the resort is getting some age on it, they are managing it well and the staff were all very, friendly and willing to help with any matter.
We stayed in a Wallum Resort Hotel Room, it was clean and tidy and had a good bed to rest, after a busy day. There are a lot of accomodation options available and if you are wanting something a bit fancier, I would upgrade the room from this option.
The 3 different options for food, will keep everyone happy with options from casual (Sand Bar and Bistro and Sand and Wood, to A la carte (Seabelle).
The Sunset Bar is the place to be to in the afternoon, to enjoy a drink or two, while you watch an amazing sunset over the water.
There are numerous activities available for all ages and the rangers are wonderful and very knowledgeable, on all things Fraser Island.
The Bush Tucker Talk is a great way to spend an afternoon, learning and tasting our indigenous food, while enjoying a drink.
The resort is managing COVID Compliance well.
Fraser Island has so much to offer and basing yourself at Kingfisher, is the ideal location to plan all your activities from.
We did the 1 Day Beauty Spots 4WD Tour and Whale Watching on the Sea Explorer, both were outstanding and highly recommended.

We came for six days and had a standard room which was very spacious. My advice is to book directly, as I noticed Expedia was advertising these rooms for $227 per night but the resort is offering them for $179, down from $199.
We found the resort very comfortable and the staff friendly. Activities are, on the whole, quite expensive but we thought the Beauty Spots tour was worth it. There’s not a lot to do around the resort after you’ve taken the self-guided walks and sat around the pool for a while. The latter becomes expensive with a few drinks, and it is this aspect that needs watching. Nothing is inexpensive and the small general store supplies little beyond emergency rations. Even though the rooms are not self-catering, I would advise bringing your own snacks and breakfast, particularly if you are bringing a family.
Having driven on the island once before I would advise against it, unless you are a very experienced 4W driver.
Meals at the Sand and Wood are very good. The Maheno Bar snacks are from the same kitchen but variable. The Sand Bar, near the jetty is family friendly, and a bit more down market but the beef burgers and the Caesar salads were worthy.
Once the rain set in there was not much to do, but that was hardly the fault of the resort. The island has plenty to explore but if exploration is what you’re looking for I’d go to the eastern side. If you’re looking for a bit of indulgence, the Kingfisher is probably the right place for three or four nights.

I've stayed at Kingfisher Bay twice, each time in the 2 bedroom standard villas. The whole resort is situated in bushland, so there's no major views of the bay/water from the rooms. Though the last time I stayed, I got lucky with a villa right at the top of the hill (back of complex), and had a nice partial view across the water.

Wouldn't think so ... there are scenic flights but from the take-off strip & often land on the beach. So I would think that's easy to assess! Its a pristine national park so that's the area to enquire about. Its one thing to have a Sea Eagle flying overhead, quite another to have a drone. Respect the area & people ... bottom line.
