I have to say before arriving at this hotel I was worried about what to expect. We had got a pretty good deal for our room which I was surprised about, staying three nights right in the middle of Summer. I'd also seen some previous reviews saying the rooms were outdated, things didn't work etc. However, when we arrived, I was so happy with what we discovered.
The hotel itself is so beautiful, giving such a great first impression and it was immediately obvious walking to the hotel that the location is brilliant. It gives you more of a local feel to your Rome experience rather than being in a touristy area and it has great restaurants within minutes walking distance. We were greeted very nicely at the front desk and our room was so pretty and traditionally decorated. Bathroom was a good size and everything worked well. Also worth noting that the front desk are more than happy to organise taxis for you and they arrive in about five minutes normally.
Breakfast was included and we thoroughly enjoyed it every morning, sitting out in the beautiful sunny courtyard. It was a great selection of food with cooked and continental and a waiter would come over in the courtyard if you wanted a different hot drink like a cappuccino. Final thing worth saying is on our last night we bought a bottle of wine from the hotel bar downstairs and were given a cooler for it so we could take it up to the roof terrace. It offers amazing views of the city and we literally stayed there for an hour watching the sunset. Such a great experience.

Our 4th visit to this fantastic hotel. Beautiful building and surroundings. Staff are professional and helpful and the rooms are lovely. Decorated to a high standard in traditional style. Most amazing comfy beds, fantastic views and a really great location for finding your way around the city. Trastevere itself is a great area to explore. Lots of narrow cobbled streets full of little shops, cafes, bars and restaurants that pop up from behind their shutters as the day progresses. There is a lovely atmosphere and a buzz about the place in the evenings. A short walk over the Ponte Sisto (bridge) and you are virtually in the middle of the city and everything is in easy walking distance. A tip would be to take comfy flat shoes as the cobbled streets are definitely not suitable for heels! Only 1 slight negative, as we stayed during the pandemic, changes were obviously expected. We were happy to wear a face mask around the hotel etc. Breakfast, although lovely and taken in the beautiful garden was a bit of a chore. Guests are asked to ‘socially distance’ queue outside of the normal self service buffet area. Instead of helping yourself to food you were instead greeted by a member of staff and asked to make your selection from what you can see (not easy). They would then select the dishes for you, load up your tray and then you took it to your table. This did take ages and I felt obliged to only make a small choice, quickly, feeling pressured by the eyes of the queue behind me. My hot food was also cold by the time I reached the table as items were selected one by one. I would like to suggest that a piece of paper for each guest with a tick box choice, submitted to a member of staff at the table (or even the night before) would be more Covid friendly. I would imagine less stressful for the staff too, who could select the food in batches per table, rather than per guest. This would avoid queues of guests and choices would be clearly stated. Even if you had to book a time for your breakfast and pre- order I think this would be preferable to most. I understand these are difficult times and adjustments are on a trial/ error basis, so this is not meant as a criticism of the hotel at all. Overall our stay was fantastic and we definitely hope to stay again next year!

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. It’s in a quiet corner of Trastevere, but just 5 minutes walk away from everything that the area has to offer. From the moment we arrived, to our final day, the service was top class: professional, warm & courteous. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone seemed genuinely glad to help. The building is a converted monastery built in the 17th century and the hotel retains a calm, restful ambience. The interior still has many echoes of its history, such as the beautifully preserved chapel, and the graceful cloisters in which breakfast is now served. Our room (309) had a huge, comfortable bed, a shower room with large towels and two bath robes, and our shuttered windows had views over the rooftops of the area to the distant hills. The third floor also has steps up to a roof terrace for more fabulous views. There is an elegant garden to relax in after a day’s sightseeing. Breakfast offers a good range of options; the fresh fruit salad was good - but make sure you also try a maritozzi bun! If you’re looking for a hotel with comfort, class and character, this one is a very good choice. I’d love to stay again!

The hotel is a former convent and as such is a beautiful building. There were only a handful of guests there when we visited, and the restaurants were closed during the day after breakfast. I had emailed the hotel in advance to say it was our wedding anniversary. All the staff at the hotel were fantastic, except for one sullen, unhelpful receptionist, who really clouded our visit. She did not wish us happy anniversary on arrival, and gave us the wrong room type. she clearly had not checked the notes on her system. We got the room changed but when I rang down to ask for bath robes (there were supposed to be robes in every room), I was unbelievably told to 'ask again tomorrow'! When I said words to the effect of 'you have to be kidding', robes miraculously appeared. The next day, my husband asked for milk to have with our tea. The same receptionist said we couldn't have any, as the restaurant was closed. This is not a Holiday Inn, this is a 4 star plus hotel, for which we paid £190 per night! My husband had to leave the hotel and go and find a shop that sold milk, in the rain! We paid for an upgraded room and the bathroom was so small you could literally not swing the proverbial cat (see photo). Considering there were so few guests, and we could not get anything to eat or drink in the hotel after breakfast, an upgrade would have been appreciated by way of compensation (especially given it was our wedding anniversary). To charge full price but not offer full facilities is poor, and the hotel was let down big time by the receptionist.

Lovely communal areas, great location, very comfortable bed and very friendly and accommodating staff.
However there were a few issues with the hotel:
The hot water pressure is weak...the cold water is fine, but the weak hot water pressure means the showers are very disappointing. This must be an issue with the way the water is heated (rather than a water pressure issue) as it only effects the hot water (you could have a very powerful cold shower if you wanted!).
Breakfast is very disorganised: guests gather around a serving hatch to place their order and there is no discernible queuing system. The service was very slow: this is not the fault of the waiter, but rather the system, as the waiter has to go and collect each item that the guest asks for, returning to the buffet when the guest has an additional request. On most days only one person was serving, meaning there is often a wait until you’re served: One day we had to stand and wait for 20 minutes until we were served. We recognise that covid restrictions might mean a reduced staff, but the hotel was not THAT busy, and this process could provide a far better customer experience with some minor changes (for example, allowing customers to place their order from the table and have it brought over, like I’ve seen done in other hotels/vars recently).
They had hand sanitizer stations around the hotel, but many of these were empty for the entire 4 nights of our stay. In fact, only one had sanitizer in it. We got a sense that these were placed here for “show” or to comply with some guidelines, rather than to provide a safe environment for the guest.
Be aware of the pigeons! There are a lot of them in the outdoor breakfast area. If you leave the table for a second, they will be up on your table, after your food. We also saw pigeons walking over freshly laid tables and cutlery. Clean your cutlery before you use it, as there is a chance that a pigeon took a stroll over it!
Finally, the bar was closed for most of our stay, open only one night. On that night, there was no bar man there, and we had to go looking for someone to serve us
All in all, the hotel is lovely, but there are clearly resourcing issues and they haven’t optimised their processes in light of recent covid restrictions. This should not be used as an excuse, as several other hotels that we’ve stayed in over the Summer have not had the issues we encountered here

My wife and I began our month-long trip through Italy in Rome in late September 2022. We knew we didnt' want to stay in Rome for very long and had some key things we wanted to do there. Those things were: • Visit the Trastevere fountain • Visit the Spanish steps • Visit the Vatican • Walk the streets and shops • Eat at Michelin Guide restaurant Aroma.
After much research and talking to others we know who have stayed in Rome, we found that the Trastevere area is the best and safest place to stay in Rome. Donna Comilla we found on our own, but only after reading reviews, researching areas, and doing our homework.
It is operated by VRetreats and is housed in a former Baroque Monastery and is situated at the foot of the Gianicolo Hills in an intimate and quiet corner of Trastevere, Rome. I will say that this place does offer a bit of a quite retreat from the noise that surrounds it in the area. We really need good rest in our daily lives and even more so when traveling so we take time to research this.
The setting of this place is gorgeous with ancient architecture and marketable walls and floors with statures. They've built the dining service into the unique halls and landscape of the entire first floor with an outdoor dining area that is so welcoming and peaceful in the morning.
There still is an exquisite church inside the building/hotel and 3 nuns that are still living in the facility. The church bells are beautiful and people do come there for the church.
Our room was very nicely put together, but it's on the back side of the building, which has public foot traffic coming down the steps. Every night and morning did offer some noise and the area was quite graffitied and full of trash. It's a city so I realize it will be hard to escape that but you may want to ask about which rooms sit where in the building. We did have a wardrobe to store clothes but it was quite small so we didn't use it - it didn't fit our things. Overall, the place was quaint and the staff was overly helpful including the restaurant staff whom we say every day we were there.
Upon walking out of the door of this place you can walk just minutes across the bridge and explore Rome on foot, visit the fountain and shop the streets. The Vatican entrance was less than 2 miles from where we were and also our restaurant reservations at Aroma we had seemed out many months in advance a 15-minute car ride.
For us, this place is in the middle of what many people will want to do in Rome. It feels safe and clean and the staff is really nice. A major travel requirement for us is good, comfy beds. The beds here were just ok and I had a little back pain upon leaving as there were the most supportive. We're used to Marriot hotels where sleep is a priority so it can be hard to find elsewhere.
But we recommend this place and think you'll really enjoy it!

On the blanket in the room there were blood, it was disgusting. No 4 star hotel should allow this. The surroundings around the hotel look like the picture I posted here - a trash hill with stink of urine. Upon checkin I asked if the rooms which are facing the street are noisy they said they arent which was a flat out lie since there was indinstinct yelling all night from drunk people under the window. The pizza they served for lunch was straight out of a freezer and overbaked. Only gets 2 stars because the bellboy was really nice and the breakfast was good.

The hotel is a converted convent with a chapel still open and a few nuns still living in the building. It dates back to the 17th century, was built in a baroque stile but the facade is unfinished and rather austere. Interiors however, are rather grand both being designed in part by famous Italian architect-Borromini. It is situated in Trastevere district (across the Tyber) formerly meant for foreign visitors, diplomats, delegations, merchants, Jews etc. It retained its original flavor so different from the grandeur of Papal capital. The room we had was clean, rather simply furnished but comfortable and quiet nevertheless. This being July, air-conditioning was barely coping. Incidentally, don’t come in Summer, it’s impossibly hot in Rome. We knew that but had no choice. Apart from the chapel, there is also a refectory, a couple of lovely fountains, statues and staircases. The view from the roof terrace is truly magnificent. We delighted in breakfasts and suppers taken in the cool of the open courtyard. Lunches we usually had elsewhere. Food was nothing but perfect, as one would expect in Italy, though perhaps more on the expensive side. When we were there it was one of the first months during the pandemic when the restrictions were a bit relaxed and I expect prices were perhaps lower than usually. For four nights B&B, late checkout, one lunch and one dinner plus some drinks we paid close to 900Euro.

Romantic and spacious rooms. Clean. Nice amenities. Staff is courteous. Room service impeccable. I didn't find bathrobes in the room and am not sure whether they are available. One complaint: very noisy room cleaning disturbed me (I enjoy sleeping in!) at 8.30 a.m.

The location is great, about a 30 min walk to all the major attractions. The hotel is a converted monastery and is beautiful inside. The roof top terrace is the jewel in the crown. The only criticisms are that there were a lot of cheeky and greedy pigeons in the courtyard where you can have your meals. Step away from your table and your meal will disappear quickly! The bar prices are pretty steep, about £14 for an average single measure drink. The rooms at the rear of the hotel suffer from road / vehicle noise. We had asked for a courtyard facing room when we booked our stay and I emailed the hotel directly backing up this request. We were given a room at the back of the hotel, albeit a huge room, but it was quite disappointing.

In my opinion, you do not want to drive a car in Rome. Walking is preferred. Public transportation is a very good option. The folks at Donna Camilla will gladly call a taxi for you. On our most recent visit, we walked to the Pantheon, several churches that featured Caravaggio paintings, the Jewish Ghetto and it was all very doable for us. On a previous trip we used public transit much more and went to all the destinations you mentioned. Getting to the airport on our last day was interesting. Taxi drivers were on strike, but the great folks at Donna Camilla secured a driver for us. Enjoy your trip to Roma.
Breakfast service begins at 7:00 am. Breakfast is varied, plentiful, delicious, your choice of light or filling. Buffet, with table service for espresso drinks.
There are more places to choose from in the Rome area.
