Have traveled to the North Vancouver Island area for 35 Years. The North Shore Inn was once one of the premiere facilities to stay, which I have from time to time. With the economic down turn when the BHP mine closed, all the local hotels felt the sting and some fell into a state of dis-repair and a few have closed or gone into bankrupcy.
I have recently revisited the North Shore Inn and found that they have made many improvements at their facility including upgrades to to carpets, tub surrounds, lobby has been tiled, freshened up the paint and are making upgrades on a regular basis.
The most recent thing I note was they have redone the balconies with aluminum rails and plexi-glass fronts which has really brightened things up. I have found the new management are dilligent about making rooms clean and committed to try and upgrade the facility. This is an average hotel for the north island and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel unless you're looking for a 5 star place, which doesn't exist in Port Hardy.

Having ground to the end of wet road on Vancouver Island to ferry up the misty Inside Passage, there are few good options to choose from here. My expectations were set for a grim night in a Scooby Doo mystery. But I was pleasantly surprised by Port Hardy and North Shore Inn. I stayed here for 1 night in mid September, very much end of season to catch one of the last daytime sailings to Prince Rupert. With a 5:30am check in at BC Ferries, this is not a hotel I expected to spend a lot of time in, just needed a place to enough sleep to make the ferry.

Desk check-in staff were super friendly and able to point me to the very few places in town still open for food (good take-out from Mo's just up the road). Room was basic but large, and with a large balcony and sea view though I didn't use it. Be prepared for no elevator. The room was quiet, clean, and I had a good night's sleep. The town itself was lifeless at this time of year and day, but again I just needed food and bed and no hassle.

Don't expect to find super value here, you'll be paying above average for an average hotel which is better than underpaying for a sketchy one, and that's part of the cost of the Inside Passage experience.

So no complaints here and this is a solid choice for a short stay in Port Hardy - if taking this ferry ride again I would consider staying here, and would recommend it to others, though probably safe to say this was literally a "once in a lifetime" experience.

Not sure why this is shown under B&B's as it is a hotel. Port Hardy is a small community at the end of the road, so you aren't going to find recognized chain hotels. The North Shore Inn is an older property across street from the ocean in the central part of town. It provides clean basic accommodations. Friendly staff. Sushi restaurant in the building is only open for dinner, but couple of other places for breakfast and meals within a couple of blocks (Cafe Guido recommended).

I have written many reviews of Hotels where I have stayed but I have never come across any place like the North Shore Inn. It is very difficult to give an accurate and fair review. We booked the Inn based on the pictures from their web site. Do not be fooled by them. The pictures bear no resemblance to what the Inn is really like. The attached pictures tell a different tale. We confirmed the booking when we reached Nanaimo, BC on our way north. We had just come off the ferry from Vancouver and wanted to alert the Inn that we would be coming at about 11:00 p.m. We were told that the Inn closed at 9:30 and that there would be no one to give us a key or allow us in after that. After protracted discussion the individual said that she would come if we got there before 11:00 but after that she would not open the Inn. We arrived at 10:00 and we were shocked at the condition in the lobby. There is no elevator and the carpets in the stairs are old, stained and smell of beer and smoke. The room was okay with two hard queen sized beds but the carpet was stained and the furnishings very dated. There is a small fridge but no phone. The TV was in colour but not a flat screen and grainy to watch. There was a small table and two chairs but no easy chair or couch. The bathroom was clean and the balcony looked out over the water. The only saving grace was the friendliness of the woman who let us in and the view from the balcony. The rooms were not serviced during the day and the beds remained unmade and the garbage was not emptied. In all honesty this may have been due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The hotel opens at 10:30 a.m. and there were frequent times when no one was available during the day. This hotel would barely make it as a hostel. There was once a vibrant restaurant attached but it is vacant and desolate. There are no amenities of any kind.

What can you get for an all in cost of C$140? Not a hell of a lot at North Shore Inn, Port Hardy. The only positive thing that could be said about the place is that the location is good. Negatives:dirty, run down, old style TV, paper thin walls, toilet that did not work properly, dirty carpet in room and in hallways. No staff available at night so if there were an emergency, even a small one, things could go out of hand easily.

This place is a bit old and dated, but it has a lot of character. The architecture is unique with a sloping front windows that face the harbour. The location is great as it’s right in front of Carrot Park downtown. The staff are really trying to keep the place up. At first we were a bit turned off by the dark halls, old carpets, and old smell. But we quickly felt at home and came to really like the place. We could walk to the restaurants, the museum, shops. In the end we were happy the expensive place out of town was all booked up, making us try downtown. Give it a try! You will definitely feel close to the heartbeat of the town.

Stayed here while waiting for the ferry to Prince Rupert. Easy to find, friendly and helpful staff. Large ,clean room with a lovely view over the Sound. The price was right and I would tell any friends that is an excellent place to stay in a charming small town.

We booked this hotel, thinking a basic hotel would suffice as we would only be spending a small amount of time there after arriving late on the ferry from Prince Rupert. The room was less than basic and gave the feel that it wasn't even clean. There were cigarette burn holes in the bed linen and holes in the towels. We were glad to leave the next morning and be on our way.

Vomit stains on rugs, changed rooms twice and it was not much better! Staff said that the stains were coffee and it was cleaned once and will be cleaned again before the next Summer season.
Horrible stains on all of the furniture, including the sofa. Towels were so old that they were actually falling apart. One towel was so badly stained it obviously should have been thown out! Shower is not a shower because the water just dribbles out as the owner installed a water saver that allows almost no water to pass through it. Rooms are up a very narrow steep flight of stairs. There is no hairdryer in the room. Tiny soap is size of shower drain. If you call the front desk from your room, it goes to a voice mail system and you can't get to speak with anyone. This place is disgusting and should be condemmed. I can go on and on but the bottom line is I don't this this listing should be on Booking.com or any other site. I'll never stay here again and as a result, I doubt it I'll use Booking.com again.

We just stayed here with out boys hockey team. The staff was wonderful, very accommodating, and understanding. We had heard some not so good things about the hotel, but it was cheap and only a block from the arena so we went with it. They have been doing renovations. The rooms are huge, newly painted, newly carpeted, many have a nice view of the ocean, and the furniture is fairly modern. The lobby and halls are pretty rough but it sounds like they are doing a little bit every year so we look forward to our visit for at next year's tournament!
