This is an historic inn stuck in the 19th Century. Reservations require a cash deposit (no credit cards) and communications with the innkeeper are always ambiguous. There is no sense of customer service and ir seems like the guest is there at the whim of the owner. Our reservation was given away and we were stuck without a place to stay one week before our arrival for a convention that overwhelmed the city. Beware of the Calder House and do not expect to be respected.

This is a beautiful heritage building with a colorful history and an awesome locale. We have stayed in many B&B across Canada and this one has great potential however......???? We stayed in the Victoria Suite and we were comfortable and all our needs were met although not what we expected from our previous B&B visits. I really don't know how to rate this B&B except to say it was unique and has great potential. I have read the other reviews and I must say that the suite was clean.,,,it was well decorated as we stayed there for Christmas.... the beds were comfortable.... no curtains in our suite ....no designated parking...it was reminescent of university days in the 70s......without our modern day embellishments...

The Calderhouse Inn, where I stayed in May 2007, is almost a contradiction in terms and certainly is, as the innkeeper herself said, 'a work in progress.' A fine Victorian building very gradually undergoing renovation, it is charming, full of mysteries, labyrinthine in its arrangement of rooms, redolent of a more gracious time, and spacious; but, it is also full of bric-à-brac and curios, radios and typewriters, strange clusters of objects, dust bunnies, and chipped crockery; the rooms / apartments, while they were once, immediately post World War II, completely attractive and of their period, are in desperate need of plaster work, wallpapering, and painting; and the plumbing could certainly be brought up to contemporary standards. The innkeeper is at once kindly, helpful, prickly, disorganized, reticent AND talkative, shy AND outgoing, and seems especially discombobulated when she is trying to prepare breakfast for a inn full of guests. Alas, breakfast is not served in the pleasant environs of the crepuscular dining room but is brought to your room; more or less punctually; but this approach rather limits the civilised exchange of conversation over breakfast with other guests and indeed with the innkeeper herself. All this said, the location is divine--right on the edge of the river, and within easy walk to restaurants, the bridges across the river to the downtown core, and to the University of Saskatchewan. There are no telephones in the rooms, but the innkeeper is very generous in letting you use her telephone. The best part is the price: $50 to $75 per night per apartment, which includes taxes and breakfast. Once the 'work-in-progress' has come to fruition, it will be an especially fine place to stay; a cross of Victorian / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon history and an ever-constant eagerness to help with all the mod cons one could desire. Good luck with your project, and many thanks!

This B&B is not at all as it's described. We stayed in the Victorian room, Was a great size but that was it!! The Tv had 5 channels 3 of which are french you get 3 remotes in which non are for the TV , The Tv was huge very old school and dirty will be posting pictures with this.It Looks like alot of items are thrift store bought not a matching of nothing and decor well theres none. The hot tub is a disgrace looked like it hadn't been used in years the garbage and rotting furniture on that deck was also part of the victorian room,The soot that was on the walls well you'll see pics maybe you'll get the idea.Breakfasts were not bad but it was the same thing every day other than the second last day she started running out of things we requested, Then the last day of our stay it was like she vanished no breakfast nothing she was gone! The floors creaked everywhere we walked and so did the rooms above us it was terrible. theres no shower or shower curtain for the hand held at all. She did not ask if we needed toilet paper or nothing. Having to take our shoes off in the porch with no heat in the -25 temps and never any lights on .The path is never shovelled and a xmas tree lying on the front porch and it's the end of feb still from xmas..She making good money and doing nothing to get it, this house is beautiful but very neglected...

Mari owns a lovely old Mansion overlooking the North Saskatchewan River, and has converted it into a most charming bed and breakfast. If you are ever travelling through Saskatoon, or just want a wonderful weekend away, I highly recommend the waffles, whipped cream and fresh strawberries, comfy beds, and fibery talk that is available at Calderhouse Inn!

Wonderful cushy bed with too many pillows, and a good book, who can ask for more?

What an intriguing old historical victorian mansion!
Our stay at Mari's Calderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast, which provides a 'turn of the century' flair, was most fascinating for us travelers from East Greenwich, RI in the States - where we appreciate the value and intrigue of such old historical mansions. The nooks and crannies, the many rooms, staircases, porches, etc... even inspired our 21 year old son who stated "It's like staying in an old castle!" The wonderful view of the Saskatchewan River and even a glimpse of the Northern lights just added to the "Just Perfect" experience for our family!

This place was a nightmare! Our first impression of the Calderhouse from the outside was decent--nice Victorian house. However, once you step into the porch, you see the innkeepers "junk" (dirty rags, clothes, a child's old car seat, shoes) scattered all around the entrance. There is also an awful smell of like a pet store by the entrance. The innkeeper does have a dog, but it smelt kind of like a hamster's cage.
The innkeeper greeted us....was kind of a hippy lady and very weird..nice but very anxious and uncomfortable to talk to. We arrived in our "suite" which was on the second level of the house. We walked into a place which is antique all right, but not of Victorian style furniture..more like the innkeepers old furniture sofa, desks, beds, kitchen area, etc. The place is full of dust, window screens are broken..letting flies and misquitos in, the sofa caves in once you sit on it, the refrigerator does not work, the bedsheets were not washed from the past guests...you can tell from the scent of the sheets, the bath tub and the sink is all covered in rust and things haven't been wiped down or cleaned which seemed in ages. This place was just awful....I do not recommend this place, not even to my worse enemy. My mother wouldn't even let guests stay in her house when it's as filthy as this place.
When it comes to breakfast, it is fair...but the innkeeper does not give you a choice...she just says "i'll see what i can whip up". When we were booking the B+B, she told us that we had choices of eggs, waffles, breakfast meats, etc...none of this was an option.
Do not stay here--save your money for somewhere that is at least acceptable. Also, the innkeeper asks for a money order / check weeks in advance and confirms your reservation after it clears. No credit cards are accepted because this place is not even supposed to be run as a legitimate bed and breakfast...we found this out after we stayed here.. Also reason why she asks for payment up front is so you feel like you have to stay here after you paid the money...no refunds if you leave early.
Only positive here was it is in a nice location that is close walking distance to places of interests.
I have no idea who wrote those other positive reviews, maybe the innkeeper herself, but trust me, stay elsewhere!

My husband and I booked a night at Calder House expecting to enjoy a romantic weekend in Saskatoon. When we arrived the suite we were presented was dusty, and simply not what we saw in photos online. The bed had no mattress cover and was covered with only a thin sheet, a number of light fixtures were broken with parts left beside them and the romantic deck overlooking the river (as advertised) was half covered in shellac with the other half pilled high with old furniture and roof repair supplies, on top of this the whole suite was filled with the smell of shellac to the point that it was unusable! We were so disappointed that we chose to leave and find somewhere else to sleep for the night. It simply isn't what is advertised and cleanliness and comfort cannot be expected. We were very disappointed.

I stayed at the Calder House B & B for 3 evenings ...... Mari the innkeeper was very lackadaisical, rude and arrogant.. The coffee was good, however the extremely simple breakfast I requested was royally screwed up every morning. [ toast ] She expected her guests to remove there winter boots in the very cold porch, [ same temp. as outside ] . She could have very easily put a large rug inside the front door where it was warm, for shoe removal. I came in once with my boots as it was -22, and she freaked out making me feel like an idiot. The suite itself was dirty, old macaroni stuck on the dishes in the makeshift kitchenette and very dusty cups in the cupboard..... TV didn't work.... hot water only lasted a few moments.... AND this innkeeper thought I might need to hear about all her problems and the problems of everyone else staying at the Calder House. Very Very overpriced for what your getting..... !!!!! I Highly recommend staying elsewhere.
