Detailed Reviews
This wonderful inn was built in our great grandfathers time and we are senior citizens. It is three floors of rooms and corridors, a delightful sunroom on the second floor and a large dining room on the main floor that overlooks a beautiful park followed by the wondrous vision of Lake Superior.
Don Evans, the genial and engaging owner showed us to a very clean and comfortable room on the main floor that had a homeade quilt on the bed. In the evening we had a live concert off the dining room for several fellow guests by a resident of the area. What a bonus and there was no charge even. Don’s mission is to bring this old dowager up to date in the way of redoing all the rooms one by one and has succeeded very well. Many people use the Red Rock Inn as a base for exploring the surrounding areas and Thunderbay is only one hour away and there are lots of hiking trails and boating for the summer and other water sports.
For a family get together or a group or a wedding or any group celebration it would be a low cost fun adventure as Don provides breakfast and there is a huge games area, pool table and lots to do without a TV in sight!

My boyfriend suggested a short weekend getaway to relax over the Valentine day weekend. He had stayed at Red Rock Inn before and really wanted to share the "unique" experience with me. Don, the owner greeted us as we arrived, showed us our room as well as some antiques displayed along the way. We were encouraged to snoop around, take a look at different rooms/levels etc. Basically, we were to make ourselves at home. We spent the evening playing games on the lower lever (pool, Foosball, table tennis) & listening to music. In the morning, Don made us eggs & bacon, told us many stories about the area as well as his experiences in the US and topped it off with our "Sunday Service", which was the Bee Gees on a huge screen playing some classics! A perfect unique weekend, wonderful host, historic hotel, fantastic room - we can't wait to go back!

My wife and I stayed here 3 nights in August. Enjoyed ourselves! The hosts are very friendly, and continue to restore the property over time. Make sure to go for the updated rooms, we had air conditioning, though the owner told me most rooms had been updated. This inn is old and there is a lot of space on the property. Self serve laundry, community fridges, large roomy dining room that serves a cold breakfast, we loved the oatmeal. It also has a large game room in the basement with a 50s style bar, though we did not use (no license just for display). Hardy Boys books to read. A patio with a lovely view where one could drink or eat a takeout meal from the Red Pebbles Cafe in the community center nearby (we vouch for the fish and chips, liver and BBQ pizza). Probably not a place for everyone, as there are motels nearby in Nipigon, and also not like the chain hotels (there are none within at least 100km or more radius), but it is peaceful with gracious and customer oriented hosts. An appreciation for what it takes to run a place like this is needed for sure.
No pets allowed. We will return again when in the neighborhood.

Don was a good host, attentive and friendly. The location is beautiful and we picnicked by the bay and enjoyed the scenery. The inn itself was rather surprising - in need of attention, very run down, very sad. The room with one bed was not pictured on the Hotels.com website. It was very clean but small, and while it seemed to have been recently painted, there were no curtains (just pull down shades), nothing on the walls, the TV was not connected to anything, one overhead light in the entrance area and one standing lamp in the room with a broken switch, bare hardwood floor. The small easy chair was not very clean. Very stark feeling. The bathroom seemed to have been recently redone - new tub and surrounds, new paint, new vinyl flooring but no front on the vanity. Towels were lovely and soft. The outside deck had holes in several places in the decking. The photos on the Hotels.com site depicted a “grande dame” of a past era- actually it was just old.

The highlight of this hotel is having the owner stand over you while you try to eat breakfast puffing on his ever present cigarette telling you his tall tales of what a great hotel he has. He was too lazy to even wipe of the patio furniture so his guests could sit for their morning coffees. Not worth the price for a single room. You can stay in a dive motel for half the cost and at least not be disappointed

This is a fantastic place!
The quirks some people mention is a big part of the charm. Not new furniture?? They are antiques. The basement games room bar is epic! Cold cereal for breakfast?? During a global pandemic this is pretty darned great, and they have yogurt, fresh loaves…and it is included in a very reasonable price.
Don is an awesome host. Funny, knowledgeable and super friendly.
I have stayed in 5 star hotels, resorts, crappy motels, and many places in between.
Cool places are rare and to be appreciated for what they offer instead of nit-picking.
Tough do do too much upgrading when you have to compete price-wise with crappy places on the highway.
Stay here. Enjoy it for what it is, and give them the revenue. My guess is that they will put it into the renos.
The other motels (not another hotel in this sleepy northern town) are not even in the same league.

We stayed at this location while moving from Winnipeg to Toronto in the winter. We were blown away by the experience. This inn has historical significance that is accompanied by a layout and design that encourages exploration. This would be an amazing spot for a large group during the summer and was also a great spot for a small group. The owners are wonderful people who tended to us individually with care and attention to detail. Our stay here turned what we thought would be a quick overnight stopover to an adventure in what felt like the set of a movie. I would 100% stay here again!

On a quick cross-the-country trip, we unexpectedly found ourselves booked into the "Hotel California", which turned out to be a completely unique hospitality experience. Donnie proved an eclectic historian who provided a wealth of information about the area and personalities who were a part of the history of The Red Rock Inn. The "RedDRockInn" decor was reminiscent of that found in "The Shining", with our host playing a quirky but very hospitable Jack Nicholson who was more than willing to show us around and talk about the vintage treasures collected over the past years, most of which fill the guest rooms. Our room was made for us. The furniture, fireplace and antiques all worked together to create a warmth and comfort seldom found in any but luxury hotels. We can't say enough about the effort that has been put into making The Red Rock Inn a very special place to stay.

Owner is delusional claiming this hotel is rated in the top ten hotels of the world. Place is 50 years past it’s prime. Owner greets guest at the door with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. When we asked to change rooms because the bed was a broken down piece of crap he became aggressive. He kept insisting the hotel was fully booked when there were only 5 quests. Calling this a hotel is insulting and it should be a hosel for $20 a night.

We stayed, for two nights, in one of the renovated rooms (Room 103) at the front of the inn, with a balcony overlooking the bay. I got a beautiful photo of the sunrise over Red Rock. If you like the Holiday Inn experience, this place isn’t for you. But if you’re interested in local history and small towns, you’ll enjoy staying here and taking a walk down memory lane.
What we liked:
The host, Don, is personable and funny, sharing the story of this “grande dame”, which was once the hub of the Red Rock community
Comfortable bed
Clean
Good water pressure and plenty of hot water
Strong wifi, but no TV (not a big deal for us since we stream Netflix and Amazon Prime)
We had the window open, so the temperature in the room was comfortable
The room is a good size, with a desk, a reading chair and a fireplace
The bathroom is spacious with nice fluffy towels
We appreciated being able to use the giant commercial kitchen—although there are coffee and snacks available all day, as well as breakfast
What we didn’t like:
The inn is very quiet, but if there are guests staying upstairs, there is no insulation between the floors so we could hear every squeaky footstep
