We stayed for 11 days mid December and loved everything about the hotel from the moment we arrived.
The Covid test at the airport was well organised and we were shown to our room till the results came through by text about 8 hours later, around midnight. We had a lovely meal with drinks in our room, unpacked and went to bed, waking early for a full day, so no inconvenience at all.
The room had a side sea view and perfect as you could see the sea and the dramatic cliff with all the different birds. The room was spacious, as was the balcony, and the bed, which was very comfortable with quality smooth sheets. The shower was the best we have had and the towels fluffy and sweet smelling.
The hotel was a short walk to marina with a few shops and supermarket, though quiet as a result of the pandemic.
The food was tasty and very varied with several theme nights, with a super house wine.
Evening entertainment in the Fly Bar was enjoyable with two singers doing alternate nights, singing a good variety of music to suit all tastes.
The hotel was spotless and very modern and purpose built, with the old sugar mill theme running throughout giving a nice touch.
The staff were attentive, friendly , and professional. We had a brilliant evening trip to see the Christmas lights in Funchal for 22 euros each. Alexandra (guest relations ) acted as our superb guide. A big thanks also to Solleize, though all the staff really made our stay so enjoyable and a real 5 star experience.

We stayed here for 5 nights through a deal with Voyage Prive. We hired a car at the airport and drove approx 45 mins to the hotel. There is a shuttle bus from the hotel that can also pick up. It costs £7 a day to park at the hotel.
We checked in and were allocated a room on the 6th floor with a corner sea view from the balcony. The rooms are well decorated, modern and clean. The layout is weird as bathroom isn’t separate so no door for example on the shower. It didn’t bother us but may do if you are friends rather than a couple!
The room was cleaned daily and turn down in the evening. We stayed Half Board as part of the deal, it is a worth noting both are buffets.
Breakfast selection was good - cereal, salads, cheese, meats, yoghurts, fry up and freshly made pancakes and omelettes which we opted for each morning. It was a bit of a free for all so if people annoy you reaching over you and pushing in maybe avoid! The hotel did all it could with masks, sanitizer points, queuing systems and floor signage but some people won’t be told!
We managed to sit outside overlooking the sea each morning the staff were on it cleaning tables and serving drinks - we liked Betty!
Evening meal also a buffet, as a vegetarian I struggled the selection is minimal pasta, potato’s, chips or vegetables. If you eat fish or meat there is a good selection and freshly cooked things each day. If you are vegan you have to pay extra around 12 euros for a main! I did this one night to get an actual meal and we ate out one night. It would be nice to have more of a selection of vegetarian/vegan meals included. The desserts were great as was the wine! We found Christina to be most helpful every day/night she remembered our wine/room etc and it’s a busy hotel she was always busy and there so many hours! Thank you to her for making our trip so good at the hotel!
There are a range of pool facilities, bar areas, beach bar etc we went to all for cocktails and snacks! We paid 20 euros each to go in the spa early on it was quiet but later more people in there and only 2 allowed in each room sauna/steam/jacuzzi.
We left the hotel each day to drive around the island to the hot springs, funchal, Monte… if you get chance go out and see more it’s a beautiful island. Car hire is available in Calhetta just for the day. We also got a boat trip with On tales at the marina which was great! And enjoyed an Italian at the restaurant down there.
It was hotel setting was relaxing, the hotel staff fantastic and sunsets incredible!!

we had a wonderful 5 nights stay at this hotel. travel during covid is not always easy, but the most kind service made it as pleasant and safe as possible. staff is very helpful, very friendly. these people know what it means to be in service industry. Kudos to them! all restaurants and bars remained open with all necessary precautions, breakfast buffet is very good having small changes every day to keep it interesting. excellent designed and furnished rooms, enjoyed the sunset from the rooms' terrace (side-sea view, but as the side is in an angle (the building is not square) you get a very good view still). Location in Calheta is a consideration: on the upside, its south-west location means a couple of degrees warmer and less clouds. the downside: it's a 45 min drive from Funchal, and at least a 30 min drive from a lot of interesting locations/hike departures.

I've been lucky to travel the world on business and The Saccharum is familiar to many of the 5* upscale hotels of major cities - except it is located in the tiny seaside hamlet of Calheta, Madeira. Hard to imagine what planning rules needed to be invented for this hotel. However, that is not to complain for the traveller benefits from everything on offer and no doubt the guests add greatly to the local economy. Sea view rooms are rightly recommended and did not disappoint. Modernistic design, some may not like the integral shower/ toilet, but 'routines' easily worked around for couples. All very clean and comfortable. Underground parking was included in our rate, as was a €25 per day voucher for the bars. Hotel offers plenty of options for gentle swimming, plenty of shade and availability of drinks and snacks/ bar food. Located at the eastern end of the modern marina, it's worth exploring the handful of local restaurants. Shout out in particular to Manifattura do Gelato for excellent authentic Italian food and ice cream.

From the warm welcome at reception to the clean and comfy rooms, this hotel does not fail to deliver the 4 star service it promises. Breakfast offered a wide selection (as much as breakfast can) and the facilities (from what we saw, with Coronavirus restrictions) were excellent. It is in an excellent location with access to the beach, store and restaurants. We would definitely come here again and would recommend to others.

This was our third stay at the wonderful Saccharum, having previously visited twice in 2018. What we love about the Sacchurum is its understated but very apparent luxury in a quiet, tranquil, get away from it all location. No worries with Covid, everyone will safely look after you. The staff are all very friendly but very professional, everyone seems to take great pride and have great respect for working at the hotel, what ever job and level they are. The hotel itself is a combination of modern architecture and being luxurious at the same time. The rooms are again, modern but very comfortable. The bathroom facilities as some have said previously are unusual, but personally we really like the seperate walik in shower, seperate toilet, and massive sink open to the room, you can still talk and brush your teeth at the same time. Housekeeping are excellent, and there is a nightly turn down with little treats left, it is the little details like this that add up to the wonderful experience we've enjoyed each time we've stayed. Breakfasts are not to missed, pretty much anything and everyhing you can think of are offered, along with complimenty fizz to wash it down with, definately sets up the day in the best possible fashion. We used the Spa on a daily basis, perfect for chilling out and would recommend getting a '3 day pass' for 45 Euros, if you intent to do the same. So would we stay again for the fourth time? You bet, yes! we've already booked, going back at the end of February.

Finishing up an amazing 5 night break here and being a bit of a hotel snob I’m amazed this is a 4 star rather than a 5 star as I cannot fault it. It’s one of the few times that the pictures I’ve seen beforehand simply do not do it justice. The hotel is very big and spacious and the room decor is slick and extremely clean. The little details everywhere are spot on. The infinity pool is one of the best pools I’ve been in and the views of the mountains and the sea are breathtaking. Breakfast is fantastic and there’s a huge range of food and it’s very well organised. Most days we have eaten lunch at the restaurant on the pool deck and I’ve enjoyed every meal. My friend is vegan and she was very happy with the selection of food on offer and how tasty it was. I’m also surprised at how reasonable the food and drinks are. Behind the pool deck you can go on some walks/hikes up the mountain and once again the views are incredible. Lastly I highly recommend the spa, was bigger than I was expecting and the facilities available are vast compared to most other hotel spas. I would say this hotel is one of the best I’ve ever stayed in and beats even some of the high end ones I’ve stayed in in the UAE. I can’t understand how anyone would have anything negative to say about it. If you do want to see the island you will need a car and perhaps the location is the only downside but to be honest once you’re here you won’t want to leave anyway.

We booked one night in a family suite (2 adults and one 2 year old) as a treat for ourselves whilst in Madeira and absolutely loved the pool and beach facilities. There was also a great children’s room and the hotel and staff are generally child friendly. However, the room was prepared for only 2 adults and there was no bed made up for the child or towels etc. By the tone we noticed it was late and we just wanted to go to sleep so I mentioned on checkout and rather than any apology or consolation I was blamed for not having asked the 24 hour concierge to come upstairs and make the bed in our room, although told to expect an email concerning the circumstances. When booking the terms provided for a 25 euro credit voucher to spend on food and drink in the hotel and I only found out the next day that it expired at midnight on the day of check-in. At no point had that been advised to me. Again at checkout I was told I would receive an email concerning the circumstances.
The email I received merely reiterated the hotel’s point of view that the circumstances were a fault of my own. I feel as though if you aren’t a “premier” client, your custom is just not required by the hotel, a huge shame given that the hotel itself and facilities really are lovely.

We stayed at the Saccharum for 10 days over the holiday break. We are very happy we chose Saccharum over other hotels because it is truly a beautiful and modern hotel. We stayed in a premium room facing the ocean and very much enjoyed sitting outside on our balcony enjoying the sunshine and warm temperatures. The bed and linens were 5-stars and we slept like babies. We also greatly appreciated the little touches that were always left in our room and looked forward to returning "home" at the end of each busy day touring. We didn't use all of the facilities but the several treatments at The Spa were the best we have ever experienced. Everyone was professional, friendly and polite and we will always treasure the memories we made. At the risk of sounding snobbish, we always choose 5-star hotels and resorts for the simple reason we don't want to be disappointed on our vacation. Well, Saccharum is definitely 5 stars to us and we have no hesitation in giving it our solid recommendation. If you are looking for a place to stay in Madeira, look no further than the Saccharum. We are already making plans for our return!

Yes, the hotel provides beach towels (we found them in our room and changed them as needed at the pool area), very convenient.
Are toiletries in the room (shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, hand and body lotion, soap).
